Oh. Arkansas allows abortion to save the life of the mother and since Jessa Duggar Seewald had a miscarriage this was apparently in accordance with the law although it makes no mention of the health of the mother as others have had to continue until no heartbeat is detected or infections grow bad enough. No other details regarding heartbeat etc. are known due to privacy details.

2023 Thread of Racism in America
Mrs Whiggins replied to Horn Under a Bad Sign's topic in Cloak Room
It's true he has mentioned that taking Dale Carnegie courses changed his life, but in addition to the traits you mention, the dedication he applied to transition into a career as a cartoonist has this quality of inflexibility that bleeds into other areas of his life? -
Flight disrupting assholes Thread of Shame.
Mrs Whiggins replied to crash_davis's topic in Daily Texan
Ya know, the Rx for anxiety was a good suggestion and all but seems to me if those engineers can figure out a way to make those oxygen masks drop down from the overhead, they could figure out a way to make an emergency alcohol supply line drop down just as well. I dunno, two four to six ounces ought to take the edge off. -
2023 Thread of Racism in America
Mrs Whiggins replied to Horn Under a Bad Sign's topic in Cloak Room
His seems to stem more from what was (I think posted in the Elon thread?) related to his GF/Wife leaving/rejecting him. One can be a total asshole, a dick, a dirtbag, and so on (and even halfway be self-aware about it), but when one wasn't in charge of making that decision it can sometimes trigger all sorts of behaviors and rationalizations. Especially for men. So, TL/DR--she broke him. -

One could name several Supreme Court justices but unfortunately their jobs are secure. -
how is that going, though? Mastodon was one that was rolled out and what was the name of the other one? Post? Are those gaining any steam at all? Twitter was rather useful for being able to get a quick aggregate of more than just AP/Reuters type news. Also great for the 'now as it's happening' event such as when the power fails or there is a coup and such.

I don't have the issue of followers/notifications as I lack an account, but the growing RW presence on the twitter platform is ballooning. Normally I just check a few journo or other specific accounts now and then to get an update but now I'm noticing a lot more of the RW stuff in the replies to people's tweets in general. Even more than usual since the most egregious were initially let back on. Lot of Christian nationalist stuff, lot of women belong at home or 'innocent' type comments about how women are happier and have more opportunities when they don't go to college but stay home and get married. More of the anti-trans, anti-semitic, anti minority posts--often with little graphs and charts 'proving' the tweeter's point. I'm sure Elon's retweeting doesn't help, but the algorithm or what have you seems to have yanked things further to the right and is really amplifying it. Those tweets then get rebroadcast on sports forums and other places where folks congregate online to yell at each other and the clouds. Given the various authoritarian funding (besides Elon's) I am not surprised at how this is going. So, when twitter worked to remove accounts that disseminated misinformation, etc, some people left for Parler (dying), and others joined up with Truth Social (also dying) and Gab (no idea how it's doing). So those three platforms plus twitter are unfettered RW leaning platforms where the disenfranchised voices are being increasingly Gamergated aside. Anyone have a solution? There is an election closer than you think.

Have you seen Empire of the Sun? I've mentioned it in this forum before, but one of my favorites of his. In case some haven't viewed it, I'll spoiler one of the parts that just really got to me:

I have yet to finish Elvis; it wasn’t because I know his life story and I’m not sure what it was exactly. I know the Col’s background and thus the kind of distracting accent by Hanks (to which I grew accustomed) but somehow using his POV didn’t hold my attention if that makes sense. I can understand why it was written but as a whole, the movie became a slog even though Butler was doing alright. So, I have bailed twice. Not usually an award show watcher other than recaps but caught a bit of the SAGs last night because Sally Field was receiving a lifetime achievement award and I wanted to see that unedited. She has sure had a long and varied career. EEAAO won a lot of awards.

It was a nice day for a woke wedding?

Thanks for the summary notes, big help for people like me that only give this a onceover during the news read of the week. The potential crimes related to the employee death/insurance policy really chaps me; the family is stupid crazy entitled but ruining others in their orbit the way he did. Stone cold.

I have a debate with myself occasionally where I question whether Tucker is more dangerous as a Fox host or if the CIA had not rejected him and he worked in their employ.

Josh Hawley - a man whose soul is dipped in dogshit
Mrs Whiggins replied to Hugo Stiglitz's topic in Cloak Room
Here are some of the reviews on GoodReads where around 26 people out of 26 ratings gave it one star: 1. "Manhood: man-hood noun 1. The act of raising a fist, while protected by barricades and Capitol police, to the treasonous masses you're attempting to fleece, then fleeing like Chicken Little when the same insurrectionists actually storm the Capitol building you're cowering in. Not even Josh Hawley can embody his toxic ideal of masculinity. Sad." 2. "This book has bestseller written all over it. Learn about manhood by a "man" who helps incite a mob and then runs like a little girl, a "man" who uses his sister's address to run for office representing a state in which he doesn't reside, a "man" who pretends he's just one of the little guys but graduated from both Harvard and Yale. Truly a load of bs from a con artist." 3. "I hear they’re making the book out of glass, so it will be as fragile as his “masculinity.”" 4. "The blurb says, "No republic has ever survived without men of character to defend what is just and true." What on earth does that have to do with Hawley? A book that doesn't need to be read." 5. "Manhood is a topic rarely discussed by people who are secure in their own." Barnes and Noble has zero reviews and whether that is because no one has read it or they disabled reviews I cannot answer. Similar with Amazon. Only editorial reviews. The Onion, however, has a nice slideshow about the book: (SIAP) https://www.theonion.com/biggest-revelations-from-josh-hawley-s-new-book-manhoo-1849356408 -
Oh man, I am so sorry. That was my bad. Will try and remember to spoiler next time.

So while I was waiting on the rest of the family, I did some googling as well. What you found got me curious and so I dug a little into Rasmussen Reports (the pollster). The founder, Scott Rasmussen, left in 2013 and the CEO is Ted Carrol. The managing editor is now Fran Coombs. Fran used to work for The Washington Times, a right-of-center publication. Whooo boy this guy. Fran Coombs, and his wife, Marion Kester Coombs-a writer for The Occidental Quarterly (an anti-Semitic white nationalist 'journal,' are fairly well known among the farther to the right of right set. He published several of her pieces in WT w/o acknowledging the relationship. Fran Coombs has had quite a few sexual harassment claims against him, which he has denied but he is OTR as aligned with such pols as David Duke among others. I can't elaborate much further w/o getting really Cloaky, but the trifecta of Elon, Fran, and Scott Adams makes sense when you're trying to take a certain message mainstream, regardless of the grifting potential. So what you're saying makes the stupid poll question make rather more sense.

Colman will be appearing in Wonka with Timothee Chalamet due out at the end of this year, but no idea of her role as it is focusing on a young Wonka and the Oompa-Loompas. She has some television work coming out as well. We still haven't seen several of the Oscar noms but the awards seem late this year so we may yet see a few more. I know it is part of the actors' job (promotion & awards) and has compensation and benefits but that part of the biz would just drain me. Anything social like that and I need time to regroup or the cortisol just goes haywire. Seems like they don't get to have much time to just do regular life with their family and friends.

I clipped your post for length, but for anyone who doesn't want to go back a page the title is "We Have A Ghost" and we saw it last night. We enjoyed it quite a bit. Some unexpected laughs including the *line: "I want to come back as a fierce ghost and haunt Ted Cruz." Brilliant. Liked the two 'teens' Kevin and Joy (played by Jahi Di'Allo Winston and Isabella Russo). Winston did good work playing a character that viewers (IMO) don't always get to see much on screen: the bright, insecure, 'nerdy' black teen. Regardless of race, teens like this usually get (searching for a good word here) written over the top: extra 'nerdy' with exaggerated emotions but this character was not that way at all and Winston did well with it and it warmed my heart to see a character like Kevin be the lead. His female counterpart, Joy, was a lot more typical (more over the top) in that respect, but it would've been hard to have two quiet introspective teens in a comedy/adventure like that for plot purposes I suspect. Plus her character had a great sense of humor that you see with a lot of teens but is underappreciated. Thumbs up from us. *Am going from memory but I think that was the wording.

When I read the poll question: "Is it ok to be white?" I thought, wow, that is a stupid way to frame a question but (no CR) Rasmussen does stuff like that. I am eagerly awaiting the question, "is it ok to be male?" and what folks make of that one. My favorite, however, will be "is it ok to be sooner?" No way anyone could interpret any of those in a variety of ways now is there? So, either Adams then reading Rasmussen's report on their 1000 respondent answers to the initial stupid question, extrapolating his own twist on it really could be that stupid or..... I mean, what @GhostOfTomJoad says has some merit. I even mulled over if Adams has a domicile in Florida and he plans on suing everyone who tabs him as racist via the recent legislation pending in that state. Back to Elon, though. People reveal their insecurities in strange ways. If you've ever read interviews with his father, that fellow is a piece of work (similar to Woody Allen via fathering children with his stepdaughter), his mother is also a strong personality and Elon is a reflection of some rather chaotic dysfunction. It doesn't excuse his behavior, but it does reveal a lot of his internal strife. He tweets to feel better about himself but it's an odd world isn't it?

Running Alt-Right Thread of Mockery and Hypocrisy
Mrs Whiggins replied to bad_teammate's topic in Cloak Room
Left off one: Let's consider for a moment the twisted logic from the conglomerate of posts above that the Anti-defamation League actually WANTS synagogues set on fire, epithets hurled, and people murdered just to make money and affect policy. Clown car people. -

Some Nazi/white power org gathered with other like-minded individuals online on various platforms and were calling for the 25th to be a national day of hate (towards people who worship the Jewish faith). Aggie response is typical (although there were a few folks who called out some of the posts below. Note that posts that are blue have received a lot of upvotes. The one below received quite a few. -
Yes and no. When she spoke to WaPo for their article on the story (linked in the tv article), this was her comment so I assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that was a case of her eyes being opened: Deborah didn’t pay much attention to the laws when they were enacted, never believing she would want an abortion. But that has changed. “It makes me angry, for politicians to decide what’s best for my health,” she said. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. If a woman wants a pregnancy to go full term but never considers those laws surrounding abortion and how they are changing, how is that not indifferent to other pregnant women?

2023 Thread of Racism in America
Mrs Whiggins replied to Horn Under a Bad Sign's topic in Cloak Room
This train of thought was illuminated quite nicely in the documentary 537 Votes. Although it was about the election in 2000, it is still relevant (esp with respect to various political operatives) and watching Roger Stone still makes my skin crawl. -
I don't know if the governor is using the same bus company, but at one point he was using Wynne Transportation. Bedford Wynne, one of the owners was a Trump supporter. If I had the time, I could attempt to track down some contributions via the TEC site, but the largest donors know how to contribute w/o appearing during a simple search. One of the aggie regents some years back donated a million to then governor Perry (prior to then being appointed to the BOR) and it was a devil of a time tracking it down. He did it in $250,000 sums over each quarter for a year and gave it to the PAC Texans for Rick Perry. Won't elaborate further than that on that topic. Wynne raked in $37 million over the last two years I believe I read in that article.
