  1. In 2018, approximately 17k Texans died in a given month, according to the CDC. As of a couple of weeks ago, Texas was ahead of the total excess death count from March through July by several thousand.
  2. I could be wrong, but I think the pick up is at Read Elementary, where Doss held classes this last year.
  3. we agree completely. But something about both videos seems off, like they're part of some performance art piece. That scene doesn't just happen organically. There's more there, but 240 characters doesn't cover it.
  4. From far away, it looks like a group of assholes harrassing/ trying to beat up a lady on her property. "Those kids are assholes!" From up close, they'll see a lady wearing (ironically or seriously - who knows, it's Portland) a swastika armband. "That lady is an asshole!" I hate Twitter.
  5. The antifa found the one profa in Portland?
  6. Isn't that what we've been doing since mid March?
  7. Correct, unless you're at that magical age where flu and covid deaths are approximately equal, which appears to be around 18.
  8. Probably about equal. Hard to say given the age range that the CDC reports deaths. Assuming 200k overall US covid deaths, you would think that 189 Americans aged 15 to 24 would die from the flu compared to 298 from covid. As a comparison for that same 15 to 24 age range, 14k Americans die of accidents and 5k die from suicide each year.
  9. I am the walrus?
  10. Knox, what age group do you teach?
  11. What if they protested the decision to not be able to throw parties and they served beer and Boone's farm at these protests?
  12. Okay, so what are the measures? Make that yard stick public. "Hey Austinites, you want to open schools? We need to be in stage 2, heading towards stage 1 on a consistent 14 day decline. Hospitalizations need to be at X. Vents need to be at Y. Positivity rates need to be Z. If you want it, mask tfu, stay home whenever possible. We're in this together and we won't move the goalposts just because."

  14. The Y runs a bunch of schools' after-school care programs and I heard they're going to provide during-school care... at the schools.
  15. Is it possible to break up the teenage bracket? There's a world of difference between a 10 year old and a 19 year old.
  16. Picking my kids up tomorrow from camp. They've been there for two weeks without incident. We'll monitor them for the next two weeks and keep them away from the olds. I'm betting the entire fall semester will be virtual, so I'm okay with our decision to send them to camp.
  17. Wasn't there some thought that the MMR vaccine held some benefits against covid?
  18. We've got two boys that are halfway through their two week camp session. The camp sent tests to everyone who wanted one ahead of time. Positives weren't allowed to come, obviously. nor were their siblings. We'll self quarantine them for two weeks afterwards. We decided to send them because this is one bright spot/ chance for normalcy for them in 2020. Plus there's no AC, so we felt the risk of transmission was lessened even more. Camp was great about refunds/ deposits for those that weren't comfortable going. Everyone has to do their own risk / benefit analysis, but maybe this helps you make yours.
  19. I mean... you can cancel the school year for your kids if you feel that's the best solution for you and your family
  20. I think his low end is still absurdly high. But even if it's accurate, 40 out of 192,000 is a risk I'm willing to take for my three kids. We make calculated risks with our kids all the time. If the chances of them dying basically approach zero, I'm okay with that decision. Letting them play baseball, swimming at a friends house, or us driving long distance for a vacation are all probably riskier activities. My wife, who's a teacher in an AISD elementary school, is a different math problem. But that's not the arrow that Dr Escott reached for.
  21. Yeah, I checked the CDC website after reading that from Escott. Since February, only 28 kids aged 5-14 have died of Covid (through 7/4) in the entire United States. Over the same time period, same age group 4,000 kids have died of other things. Not saying it's not deadly. Not saying death is the worst thing that can happen. And not saying it's not a dangerous virus, but for Dr Escott to claim that up to 1,400 kids in Travis County might die is a bit disingenuous.
  22. Welp, there goes the McCallum bowling team I suppose....
  23. Yeah, that Rice story was in the New York times yesterday.
  24. I think Denmark and Finland (?) opened up schools, but only for elementary kids Middle and highschool kids stayed home, which makes sense for two reasons. Those kids can conceivably do distance learning well and they spread the virus. I just don't get the sense that we're looking at all options, including those that other countries have tried and I supposed have been successful at. I think Israel opened up schools and failed, so let's not do what they did.
