  1. Yes you do. I have a buddy that works for the Alaska Railroad. He gave me a 3 foot piece of 100 pound track that they were replacing. That means it weighs 100 pounds per foot. I've got it bolted to the bed of the truck directly above the back axle. The plow blade weighs right at 800 pounds. The frame and hydraulic set up weighs another 400 or so.
  2. You weren't talking about work trucks when you started the thread. You were talking about the overpriced behemoths of today that rarely get off pavement, and I agree with you. I like older vehicles. I think they look better and I can maintain them for the most part with a standard set of tools.
  3. I plow my neighbor's driveways when asked to. The payment is 5 gallons of gas put into the tank when I'm done. Ol' Blue gets thirsty.
  4. Exactly Replaced the water pump in it last weekend. Took about an hour.
  5. It gets a smooth 9 mpg on the highway. No clue what it gets when pushing snow. It snowed about 14 inches over the last week. Never snowed hard, just didn’t stop until Friday. Plowed 3 miles of road in less than 3 hours. It will push just about anything.
  6. I was out plowing the road yesterday and thought of this thread Here is my plow rig, a 1985 F250 with a 460 big block and 4 speed manual transmission. Love this truck.
  7. A truck is realistically the only option where I live, but the prices are fucking crazy. I'm a simple man. I don't want all the electronic gizmos that everyone seems to be enthralled with these days. I have 6 requirements for a truck...gasoline engine (because diesels are a pain in the ass to get started in the deep cold), 3/4 ton minimum, 4WD, full size bed, front hooks, and at least an extended cab for gear transport. The last truck I looked at up here was a fleet model F250, which is fine with me, and they wanted almost $75K for the thing. Fuck that.
  8. I hope the power gets restored soon. Be safe out there you Surly Degenerates.
  9. I didn't put it together until the scene where Joel, Tess, Bill, and Frank were having a meal on the lawn. At the end of the scene when Frank and Tess were walking to the gate they were talking about the radio code. I thought the code was going to be between Joel and his brother, but it ended up being between characters we had not been introduced to yet. It makes more sense if you are familiar with the lyrics of Never Let Me Down Again. If you aren't a Depeche Mode fan I would suggest you look the lyrics up.
  10. At the end of Ep 1 just after Joel, Tess, and Ellie left to start heading West the radio came on and played the Depeche Mode song. According to the code, that meant trouble. That was the night Bill and Frank had their last meal together. Bill let Joel and Tess know something was up, but they never heard the warning.
  11. Checking in Weird this story died in Alaska after the first day or two. Makes me think the rumors I've heard are true. Someone didn't follow trash protocol and the smell lured the bear in. Wrong place, wrong time for the mom and kid. Such is life up here, especially in polar bear country.
  12. Those throwback unis they were wearing against ULL in that highlight reel are the best I wish those were our current uniforms
  13. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime, but I think you are correct. Don't fear, but be ready...Valhalla calls.
  14. Rules of Engagement Jeff Bingham is one of my all time favorite TV characters
  15. Question about optics… Will the optics frost over if taken from inside a warm cabin to a very cold outside? I mean we’re talking what could possibly be a 100 to 130 degree or more temperature change. Are they made for something like that?
  16. Moose’s xmas present to himself this year is to upgrade his standard AR-15 (5.56). I’m not a gun geek and when I tried to go down the rabbit hole that is AR upgrades the sheer volume of choices hurt my head. So I figured I’d just ask Surly what they would add to my Windham Weaponry MPC?
  17. Yep, the struggle is real But it’s the Winter Solstice today. We start gaining light tomorrow Cross post from the non-Texas thread:
  18. Hasn’t been above -40 for 4 days Wife told me it got to -54 while I was at work yesterday Who wants to come visit?
  19. 45 below right now. Supposed to be like this for the next 2 weeks or so if you believe the forecasters. On a positive note, the Northern Light should be spectacular. Layer up y'all.
  20. The SOS stuff available on the new smart phones is pretty iffy up in these latitudes. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. If the company I work for didn't supply me a phone I'd still have a flip phone like my wife does. She refuses to upgrade to a smart phone. She does have an iPad though, but that's mainly for cabin entertainment.
  21. Cheers Wood heat is just different. Warms you to the bone.
  22. On mushrooms standing around a campfire was my favorite experience Never had that many neurons firing at one time in my lifE
  23. Long term exposure to those temps without the proper gear is a definite hypothermia risk I always say this but no one ever believes me, the deep cold is not as bad as you think it is Your first exposure to those type of temps sucks. Like examining your life type sucks, but you acclimate quickly I’m a North man now. The blood has thickened, so to speak. Anything above 70 is miserably hot to me. I’m sure I’ll acclimate back when we get too old to do this anymore and move south I was in flannel pajama bottoms and regular house slippers and shirtless when I took that pic of the lights. Went outside to take my old man piss at 2 am. The lights always come out late on cold nights, so I grabbed my phone in case they were out. I was rewarded. I was out at 30 below for about 5 minutes total dressed minimally. It’s cold, but bearable. Not dangerous. It’s feels nice to go back inside and warm the bones by the wood stove then crawling back in bed. Simple pleasures
  24. I haven’t seen that movie I’ve been told I should
