Moose hunting is a great time until you pull the trigger. Went to moose camp a few times when I first got up here. Now I’m lazy and road hunt. The wife likes to go, it’s good productive time for the two of us. I’ve never heard of an area where it is illegal to debone, but the fucking hunting regs are such that I just know the regs for the game management units I hunt, 20A and 20C. Everyone around here bones the loins, backstraps, ribs, and neck. They leave the bones in the hindquarters, cut off at the butcher’s joint. Makes hanging and aging easier. Hang the front legs the same way. BTW the hindquarters on that moose weighed about 200 pounds a piece. Four miles is a long haul with that much weight on your back. And the regs are you have to pack all the meat out before you can pack the head/antlers out.

Doesn’t really matter what you wear. Moose hunting is cold and wet. They hunt the non-motorized areas as well. That’s where you hunt if antlers are a priority for you. He was 4 miles from moose camp. They have to cut that thing up and haul it by hand 4 miles. He said he was so soaked thru with sweat and blood and rain he had to squeeze the liquid out of his base layers just to hang them up to dry by the fire at camp.

We’ll find out. They left the claw hammer they used on the steering column. I waited over 3 1/2 for a trooper to show up. Law enforcement is sparse in my area. He took pictures, statements and bagged the hammer to send it to Fairbanks. Lots of theft, especially mail theft in the 3 months these chucklefucks have been around. They are squatting on a power line in a wall tent. Of course the do gooders have been feeding them and praying for them which has only extended their stay. Rumors of a couple of run ins with Anchorage moose hunters, like guns drawn type run ins. But who fucking knows? Anchorage hunters are fucking assholes on the trail too. Of course there are children. Why wouldn’t there be? My buddy took a ride to check them out and he said they don’t have a stove pipe, so no stove. They can’t winter over without a stove. They are predicting a colder than usual winter, so more 30 to 40 belows less 20 to 30 belows. I’m assuming they’ll leave when it starts getting cold, another month.

The plow truck was still sitting at the gravel pit where I moved everything when the fire got so close, about 3 miles away from the cabin. The starter motor took a shit on me and I've been waiting almost 2 months for the correct replacement part to come in. The first starter they shipped was incorrect. The shitty thing is I went to Fairbanks to pick up the starter on Saturday and drove by the truck at the pit. Everything was ok. Went to the pit on Sunday morning to install the starter and first thing I noticed when I pulled in was the back window being broken. So it happened Saturday night sometime. They destroyed the steering column trying to get it started, which it wasn't going to do because it had no starter motor. When they couldn't get it started they stole the batteries out of it. I guess I'm lucky they didn't decide to just destroy the whole fucking thing. They wanted the plow. The plow is worth 2 or 3 times what the truck is. Fucking meth head thieves. I have an idea who did it. I'll be watching them.

Steering column for 1985 F250
mooseoutfront replied to mooseoutfront's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I think I found one. A friend of a friend has a cousin who has a junker F150 down in Wasilla. Correct year with a floor shift transmission. It should work. Gonna head down there this weekend and pull it. If it doesn't work, I'll update this thread Thanks to all those willing to help a brotha out Hook 'Em -
Fucking thieves tried to steal my plow truck. Broke the back window out and beat the ignition switch out of the steering column trying to hot wire the thing. There is not one available in Alaska, so I'm looking for help in finding one. Website advice or junkyard scroungers are appreciated. I will pay for your time and shipping and beers. Snow will be here soon, so I need one ASAP. "I just wish I could have caught them doing it. It would have been worth them doing it if I could have caught them doing it." -Vincent Vega

Sarah Palin can be with Glen Rice now.....

I am truly fucking amazed that a Democrat won that seat. I hope this is a harbinger of things to come and that the stink of Trumpism goes away sooner rather than latter. -
Galena is a tough place to live. Kudos to them for making it into their third year.

First bear sign I’ve seen around the cabin all summer. This is a little guy. Mom probably kicked him out recently. Time for him to learn how to make it on his own.
-
Oh… It snowed here today at elevation. Termination dust it’s called. Termination of summer. Winter is coming. Hopefully the cooler air will get down to y’all soon.

I’ve really only seen it as a jelly or honey. The honey is good. Never had the jelly. It has medicinal value too. I think one of it’s main properties is in the holistic treatment of an enlarged prostate. Labrador tea grows wild all over the area I live. Chaga grows on the trees. Lot’s of holistic teas are made with all three.

I feel for y’all. I couldn’t handle the kind of heat y’all are dealing with anymore. My mom in Abilene says it’s been miserable. That being said, here’s a glimmer of hope. The worm has definitely turned temperature wise up here. Hopefully the cooler air will make it’s way South soon. Temp on my way to work this morning.

Native up here means indigenous people or tribal and there is tons of animosity between the native population and the general public. I will probably get skewered by some for saying this, but I have never had a positive experience with a native. I've had neutral experiences with them, but the vast majority have been negative to very negative. Natives are openly racist towards all non-natives. Black, brown, or white it doesn't matter. They blame everyone else for all their problems and bad behavior. Drunkenness, drug abuse, physical and sexual abuse, or their current situation is all the fault of whomever is standing in front of them at the time. The only time I've ever pulled a pistol on someone was when I was in Anchorage for training. I was walking to the back to the Captain Cook hotel from dinner and a group of about 10 drunk, drugged out natives tried to get money out of me. It starts off with can I bum a cig? Then it goes to do you have a dollar? When I said no to the money request the whole group started heading my way. I pulled the pistol and pointed it right at the dude who's turn it was to ask the questions I guess. They started in with their get the fuck out of our state white boy bullshit, but they all backed the fuck up and sat back down. This was about 2 blocks from the Anchorage Police Station. Basically it's political suicide to say anything negative about the natives, but they can shit all over anyone they want with no repercussions.

We mix burger 80/20 with beef fat. Sausage is 60/40. We try to do a little jerky each year. Making jerky takes a lot of room. We only have a 400 square foot cabin, so we only do one or maybe two batches. We focus on roasts, burger, and sausage. I use 150 grain bullets, anything that stays together. You don't want ballistic tip or anything like that. You want the bullet to retain as much of it's weight until it hits vitals if you are going for a heart/lung shot. I'm a fairly good shot with my 270 up to 300 yards, so I usually go for a neck shot. Basically around where it joins the body. The bullet breaks the neck at kills the animal immediately...DRT. I've done the whole moose camp thing and it's tough work. I basically camp everyday in my normal life so I've taken the easier route when it comes to hunting. I'm a meat hunter. I really couldn't care less about trophy antlers, so me and the wife road hunt. Road hunting is legal here as long as the bull meets game management unit restrictions where you are hunting, you don't shoot from your vehicle, and you don't shoot across a roadway. As an Alaskan resident I get a moose harvest ticket with my hunting license. There are all types of hunts up here. You can put in for draw tags, subsistence, etc. It's just me and my wife, so one moose a year fills the freezer for us. I've killed a caribou, but I'm not that fond of caribou meat. Has a weird taste to me. So I don't really concern myself with the regulations when it comes to other species of animals besides moose and the politics involved in all the subsistence native shit. I don't shoot cows. They produce the next generation. I go for young bulls. I think they taste better. The moose pics I posted in the first page of this thread were of the biggest bull I've ever shot. He was killed 200 ft off the highway. Moose is very mild compared to venison. The only real difference in meat is shooting a bull in full rut or a really old moose. With all the testosterone flowing at that time the meat can be pretty gamy. Plus they roll around in the cow's urine they are chasing at the time and run themselves crazy during the rut. By far the most dangerous animal in the woods is a bull moose in full rut. They attack vehicles and will fuck you up when they've got pussy on the brain.

Reconstitute 12 to 20 dried morels. Retain the liquid and cook a standard package of gnocchi in the mushroom water. Add some more water if you need to. Dice two strips of bacon and render until crispy. Remove and reserve bacon bits. Add a little olive oil to bacon grease Dice up the morels and a couple cloves of garlic and sauté until cooked down. Add 1 pint heavy cream, salt and pepper to taste and reduce by 1/3. Throw the bacon bits back in and a couple of handfuls of spinach and stir constantly until spinach is wilted and sauce reaches desired consistency. Spoon sauce over gnocchi, hit it with a little parmesan and go to town.
-
That’s hilarious because the exact same thing happens here. There will be groups of 20 or more Asian women out there collecting. We collect to eat too. My wife dries them for winter use. I make a killer morel cream sauce with fresh spinach and bacon that we usually serve over gnocchi. Great winter dish.
-
On a positive note, next spring the burned area will produce a shit load of morel mushrooms. People will make a good little side income harvesting them. I think you can get $50 per pound for them from the wholesalers.

Wife is working for Forestry in Fairbanks. I’ve been prepping solo at the cabin. If the fire were to jump the river in the middle of the night, Forestry would come through with their sirens on letting people know new shit has come to light.

Since it’s calmed a bit here are a couple of pics...from a tanker pilot out of the base my wife is working at in Fairbanks. Rex Bridge in lower left corner crossing the Nenana River. You can see that big bend in the road I referenced on the map to the south just past the bridge.
