  1. It gets fucking cold.
  2. Biggest bear I've ever seen. The pic doesn't do him justice.
  3. We call this one meat coma
  4. The midnight sun. Pic taken at 12:03 am on the Summer Solstice
  5. After posting some in the non-Texas Winter weather thread, I had some requests to start my own thread about my life in Alaska. The backstory...My wife and I have lived completely off the grid in the Central Interior region of Alaska for going on 12 years now. It's the lifestyle we prefer, it's not out of necessity. We live in a 400 square foot one room log cabin in the woods, no electricity or indoor plumbing. We provide for ourselves as much as we can off the land by hunting, fishing, and gardening. We moved from Texas to chase my Grandfather's dream of living here. It was the best decision we ever made. I'm happy to answer questions.
  6. I know it’s a weather thread, but it’s always nice to cross paths with the critters around here. This is a young cow moose with last years calf that have been hanging out in our neighborhood. They are doing well, even at 30 below.
  7. I bartended/waited tables for about 5 years. I had a lot of fun. Most people were cool, but there are assholes everywhere. I agree that the Sunday after church crowd were the worst, but the only person that I really remember was this old fuck stain who shook his empty glass of ice at me when I was weeded behind the bar on a Monday night during football season. I ignored him and served everyone else but him. I thought he was going to have a stroke. I finally went over and explained to him that as the only bartender on shift that night I'm the last person in the world he wanted to piss off. I am the drink God, and that he was now cut off and needed to leave. He was speechless. I would like to he learned something that night, but I doubt it.

  9. Is IPIHB the preferred nomenclature for NSAA? If so, then I too would enjoy access. Or should I PM Derka?
  10. I am very fucking surprised he did not give us that reward.
  11. The shitter has actually evolved into a place of honor because so many people have never used an outhouse before they come out to the place. When someone new comes out we ask them to bring some sort of tchotchke to put on the shelves or hang in the shitter. The inside walls are covered with all kinds of stuff. Funky outhouse decorations are actually a thing in Alaska.
  12. You are colder than we are. It's hovering around zero today. We had a Chinook blow through and it's been above freezing the last couple of days. The roads are now properly fucked. From 60 below at the first of the month to 42 above yesterday. It's been a weird winter.
  13. Interested in obtaining a 1911 .45 Never owned a 1911 before, I just want one Trying to stay in the $1000 to $1500 range Been looking at the Springfield Armory Loaded Operator. Anyone have any experience with this model or some other recs in my price range?
  14. Fuck no. I've lived with my wife in a 400 square foot cabin for 10 years. There is no such thing as privacy or shame. If she's not willing to help, I wank it while lying next to her in bed. She'll even pass me a tissue when it's clean up time.
  15. And a pic of what seems to cause the most head shaking amongst you lower 48ers of my life choices
  16. Couple of pics of the cabin
  17. Our good friend and basically mentor up here has electricity. We have two chest deep freezers plugged in at his house. He lived for 20 years like we do, but then he started getting old and built a place off the highway with electricity and indoor plumbing. He is the best woodsman I've ever been around. I've learned a shit ton from him. I'm extremely fortunate he is in my life. I'm also fortunate that my job has shower and laundry facilities that are available for me to use. So that part is easy for me. My wife usually bathes at the cabin out of a small washtub. She has her system down to the point that she can wash her hair and bathe in less than 3 gallons of water. But she's a tiny little thing at 5'2". I'm a pretty big guy at 6'5". I have bathed at home, but it's a cluster fuck for me.
  18. No, that's a wall tent. That is a buddy's moose camp. A guy he took out hunting with him got that pic of the tent and the Northern lights in the sky. They go after trophy moose. His moose camp is about a 50 mile wheeler ride from the highway. And it's a tough ride. They usually go out to camp and hunt for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. I try for little guys. It's only my wife and I, so we don't need that much meat. Plus the smaller guys taste better. The antlers I'm holding in that pic upthread is the biggest moose I've ever shot, a 46 1/4" spread. Trophy moose start at 60". The biggest moose I've ever seen taken had a 73" spread. That thing was fucking huge. Each hind quarter weighed almost 300 pounds.
  19. We’re set up to deal with it and have spent years perfecting our system. It’s what works for us. You can’t expect to know what to do and how to deal with it in 5 days. The only thing you can do is learn from your mistakes and be better/more prepared next time. My mom lives in Abilene. She said it got to -3 there. She was out of power for a week. It was a trip telling her what to do to stay warm. She was clueless.
  20. It is. Found it floating down a river. appreciate it. Hook ‘Em
  21. Quite a few of us live dry in Denali. We are one of the few who don’t have electricity. Probably a couple hundred if us or so. Electricity is the game changer, but it’s expensive to get. Our cabin is 28 to 30 poles away from getting electrified, but it costs $6000 per pole.
  22. Biology minor i’ll check it out. Thanks.
