  1. The good news is Spring might be here next week. Special weather statement about a warming trend. They only do that when they think the ice and snow are going to start rotting Gotta start being careful on the trails and especially the river and lake ice.
  2. Missed getting back to you in time but glad you saw how it ended I haven’t heard the full story, but a moose got tangled up with Seavey’s dogs and he had to shoot the thing before it killed them all Shit like that happens from time to time and there are very specific rules about the meat salvage, because the meat is going to someone out there It is not wasted I’ve said it up thread, moose will fuck you up Most dangerous animal in the woods
  3. Magnum enjoying the early spring sun. 10 degrees and sunny is porch nap weather.

Tried this for the first time last night. Magic Marker 32.28% THC. High.
  5. My home town Not much to do in Abilene but eat and fuck Perini Ranch is very solid. The Shed BBQ is good but I like Jay’s BBQ better. It’s one block east of Treadway on ES 11th. El Monterrey on N 10th is still my mom’s go to for Mexican. Los Arcos on Ambler is real good when it’s on, but it has been hit or miss lately.

  10. Winter finally showed up about 2 weeks ago. Before that it had been the mildest winter we've ever experienced. Less that 2 feet of snow total and it had only been below zero a handful of times. Then the bottom dropped out. Got to 63 below at the cabin last night. It's been below -40 at the cabin for 11 straight days. Supposed to start warming early next week. The shitty thing is the Lights are usually spectacular when it's this cold, but we've had nothing in that regard during this stretch. Burned more wood in the last couple of weeks than we had in the last couple of months combined. We have noticeably more daylight now. The sun will eventually win and spring isn't that far away. Cheers Wally
  11. You a very welcome. We checked Jolie’s mouth and gums for a couple of weeks after her porcupine encounter. The vet said on xray it only looked to be 5 or 6 mm long. Probably broke off under the gum during the incident. Give Charley and Emmy pets from the Great White North.
  12. While true, a porcupine quill ultimately did in my chocolate lab Jolie. Unknown to us, one broke off in her mouth, embedded in her gum. A curious thing about quills is they continuously bore into whatever they are stuck in. She started having recurring infections. Antibiotics would knock it out for a week, then it would return. We played this game for a few months, then finally an xray revealed the problem. By the time we had this info it had drilled all the way into her jaw bone. She was 14, the infections had weakened her to the point that the vet had doubts she would survive the surgery. We took her home to the woods and managed her pain until it was time. My wife called me at work to let me know what I had to do when I got home. Fed her a moose steak and gave her one last wheeler ride to the river she loved to swim in. Hardest trigger I’ve ever pulled. Put her in the river she loved. I’ll be hoping Charley and Emmy fully recover.
  13. No clue, should I have? made cheese enchiladas instead of chicken and dumplings
  14. There is a Denali Mac on the menu up here. A Big Mac made with two Quarterpounder patties. Solid.
  15. Chicken and dumplings weather
  16. This has been the mildest winter in the 14 years we’ve been up here, but it finally decided to show up next week

  18. I saw my first in Fairbanks this weekend. Actually there were two. One right after the other. Must be doing some cold weather testing or something.
  19. It’s not what you fling. It’s the fling itself.
  20. Happy Solstice! We start gaining light now, which is much appreciated Sunrise is around 11, sunset is at 3 Shortest day of the year
  21. For a mom and pop environmental lab in San Antonio. I ran semi-volatile and volatile organics by GC-MS for them. Neither of the two owners were chemists nor had they ever operated analytical instruments in their lives. I have no idea how they've been in business for 30+ years. A complete shit show. The stress and angst from that job was literally making my hair fall out. I felt physically ill whenever I'd walk through the lab door in the morning. I'd rather dig ditches.
