  1. On the day of the Jarrell tornado I was in Moody. I heard on the radio there was a tornado warning nearby and could see the cloud but I got some bad info on where it was headed. I thought it was headed for where I was at on the north side of Moody but it was going actually going to the southwest at a parallel angle to highway 317. I started going south on 317 and then after a few minutes the radio said it was headed for where I was at on 317. I had my truck doing 100+ mph going southbound, then I cut over to the east on FM 1237 to go pickup my grandmother and get her out of her old house. I took her out for a ride back to the east away from all the action. The tornado had gone back up in the clouds when the storm crossed the path I took. It was really amazing that it struck where it did in Jarrell. That subdivision at the time was in the middle of nowhere and as powerful as that storm was it was incredibly lucky that that few amount of people were killed. If it had come through the middle of Temple or Belton it would have killed hundreds. Sheltering in a bathroom or closet did nothing for those that were killed. There was nothing left in that subdivision except for the foundations.

  9. Between last week’s oral history of Boogie Nights on Grantland and this week’sPaul Thomas Anderson WTF interview, this past month has been a treat for those of us who can’t get enough Boogie Nights behind-the-scenes stories. The most recent one that stuck out to me is a story from WTF about Burt Reynolds’ line read of “Nevertheless.” I couldn’t find an embeddable version online, but if you remember the movie, there’s a scene where Mark Wahlberg is screaming at Burt Reynolds’s character, demanding to shoot a scene, and Reynolds is telling him that he can’t shoot it because he’s been up for two days. Dirk protests that he hasn’t been up for two days, at which point in the original script, Jack Horner says “Nevertheless, you don’t look good and I’m not going to shoot you this way,” or something to that effect. Meanwhile, Horner’s cameraman. played by Ricky Jay(pictured, right) holds them apart. Anderson says every time the film comes on cable, he can’t help but notice the pained expression on Ricky Jay’s face during that scene.

I enjoy being not invited to Thanksgiving because "the house is already too crowded" 3 bed, 2 bath house, 1 bedroom made into an office, 1 bedroom made into a workout room, leaving an air mattress, another air mattress, a couch, a sofa, and the master bedroom for 5 people with me being the 5th.
