Llano update. Checked out four access points yesterday.
Maso-Llan Rd - TPWD access point. Had to call ahead and get a gate code. River was wide and about 6 feet deep in the channel. Caught several guads on a Llanolope and one nice largemouth on a olive crawfish. Fishing around rocks was most productive. Waded upriver some, but probably should have waded farther up to the rocks at the bend.
Castell - fished up river from the crossing. Caught 6-7 nice guads, similar to the on in the post above, on a Llanolope. I preferred this spot to the first spot because the fish were concentrated in deeper holes edged by vegetation. All of the nice guads were caught in a 15 yard stretch of river. Lunch at the Castell General Store - great burgers.
CR 103 - parked at another TPWD access point just up from the crossing, up river on the south side. Wide open river with little ability to wade. Significant silt on the rocks made it difficult to even get in. Didn't even fish. Since it was afternoon, there were several families swimming around the CR 103 crossing, so we didn't try to find another spot.
CR 102 - Families swimming at the crossing near the north side, so we parked on the south side. Decided to wade upstream to some deeper pool. So much silt on the pink granite rocks it was near impossible to walk - I busted my ass once. Since it was late and I'm too old to risk busting my ass over and over, we headed back to the truck and drove home.
Next time we go, we'll head back to Mason to fish the James River, the confluence of the James and Llano and the crossings at and above Hwy 87.
All in all a great day of exploring new spots and catching nice fish.
