  1. Stopped at Kolacny's Bar-B-Q House in Halletville yesterday on the way to El Campo. This is a place listed in the 2021 TM BBQ Honorable mention and receives good reviews throughout those who like obscure, old-school barbecue - like the podcasters on Tales From the Pits. We got there around 1:00 following quite a rush. The original owners, Ervin and Carolyn, were manning the shop because the son and daughter-in-law, who now run the joint, were catering for a funeral. I really wanted to try the pork steak, but unfortunately Ervin said that the only thing they had left was two rings of sausage. Of course I got those two sausage rings and they were great. Course ground with a perfect snap. I'm looking forward to finishing the sausage this afternoon with a stack of saltines. Although its out of the way for almost anyone, I will go back (probably paired with a trip to Shiner). If Halletsville is on your way somewhere, its worth the stop. Even if all meats were available, I probably would have only bought pork steak, sausage, and a half chicken. I don't go to places like this for brisket, which many places have perfected. I go for the simple food cooked in a manner that it has been cooked since the 1800s. The same reason I grab a sausage ring from Smitty's when I'm in Lockhart.
  2. I don't call them mudbugs, but I understand it's pretty common in Louisiana. In different places I've lived they are called crayfish, crawdads, and crawfish. Just don't over cook them and you can call them whatever you want.
  3. I like the show, even though it is pretty cheesy. I watch it as much for the old Chevy & GMC trucks and Suburbans as anything else.
  4. I like the video of the R&R HOF artists, but I wish is had the date of the SNL performance listed as opposed to the year they were inducted into the HOF.
  5. Somewhere around 45% of US imports are of intermediate goods - components that go into end goods produced by US companies. Out of the top countries from which the US imports intermediate goods, Canada is No. 1 and Mexico is No. 2. While Mexican and Canadian companies might absorb some of the costs increases of the tariffs, much of the cost will be fronted, directly or indirectly, by US companies and their end users.
  6. Only an unpopular opinion in places outside of Texas with mediocre barbecue.
  7. From San Antonio Express-News story re: 2M and Castroville BBQ:
  8. I remember so little about season one other than I enjoyed it. I'll probably rewatch the final episode just to get my bearings.
  9. Tempted to go see him at the Austin Rodeo in March. I saw him twice in 2022 when he was on his final tour - glad to see he's not done and more happy to see that he's embraced sobriety.
  10. I think you will probably live. I don't think I would stay that close to the freeway due to the noise. If you are driving, I hope it has off-street parking.
  11. Where is Ralph the Swimming Pig when you need him?

  13. I hate manufactured fouls.
  14. They are painful to watch this year.
  15. The only way to stop another team's run is to throw 3 point bricks until one goes in.

Finished the episode today. Sufficient information to be annoying at parties - much like vegans or triathletes.

Cascante, Vaisanen, Hines-Ike, and Svatok. Probably serviceable unless there is a season ending injury.
  18. It would seem so, but no. They are some of the best due to being cooked perfectly and having a flavorful, stout bark. The sauce is a negative for me. It's not a sweet barbecue sauce, but more like a simple syrup.
  19. I get burned on that at Mum Foods. They have some of the best ribs, but they squirt a little sweet sauce on them right before serving. I always remember that right as I sit down with my tray.
  20. Sorry for your loss, Brisket. I lost my dad 20 years ago when he was merely 60. I thought about him yesterday. I thought about him this morning, even before reading your beautiful tribute. Fishing was the great bond between us as well. My father was not a patient man, especially with young Jerry's anticks and attitude. The most patient I ever saw my father was when we were fishing. I remember as a young kid tossing my lure right into a tree, again and again; expecting unapproving looks or words that never came. I remember getting to go trout fishing in sub-zero temps and bitching about being cold the entire time, then being invited out again the next day. As my dad was dying, I helped him down to the dock and carried him into the boat for our last fishing trip - we caught fish due to his lessons over the 30+ previous years. I shed tears this morning for you, your father, me, and my father.
  21. I've prevailed in more than one case based upon information gathered from social media accounts. People are idiots.
  22. We watched the first two episodes last night. Intriguing enough to keep watching. Is it considered a series or limited series? Seems like the type of story that would do well as a limited series and get old as a full series.
  23. My kids, 20 and 21, had never heard of Bluesky when I asked them about it on Sunday.
  24. We stayed a little farther down on St. Charles in April. I think I confine walking to the Garden District between St. Charles and Magazine. You can cover many miles up St. Charles and back down Prytania. Walking the Garden District and looking at the bad ass old houses is one of my favorite things to do in NO.
