Some notes from day one:
- The QB room is loaded.
Arch Manning has a chance to be a special player. His arm strength, footwork and ball placement are all well ahead of normal would-be first-year starting QB.
Trey Owens continues to impress with his arm strength and relative accuracy.
KJ Lacy is a departure from the other two. He’s significantly smaller, but moves smoother and is extremely accurate for his age. Really liked the way he looked from a timing perspective. The college game didn’t seem too fast for him out of the gate.
- Tre Wisner has switched to jersey no. 5. He also looks like he’s added a little weight to his frame, even from two months ago.
- Christian Clark participated in early drills. He looked quick and decisive. It’s hard to believe he’s less than nine months out from an Achilles tear. With Clark, I can see why Tashard Choice felt like the Horns would not need to go to the portal.
- Parker Livingstone is legit. I’m not saying he’s the next big-time receiver at Texas. But I’m saying he’s going to make his way into the rotation somehow. He’s a player and he’ll be ready this year IMO.
- Good luck covering Ryan Wingo. You’ll have to play a safety over the top, be extremely fast or unbelievably physical to win against him. Otherwise, he’s going to get open somehow.
- I mentioned this on the show with CJ Vogel. The young receiver group is talented. However, if I’m basing what I saw on day one alone, I’d venture that the secondary that Texas signed will be as good or better than those wide receivers as a group. Those are going to be some serious battles in the years to come.
- I think Texas will be more than fine at DT this year. They hit the portal pretty well and Alex January has come on some more. Texas probably needs one more DT in the portal. But I like what I saw overall.
