  5. What's the official word?
  6. Hopefully Gunner runs well today!
  7. CJ Vogel The media session on the first day of spring practice has concluded. I will be bringing you some notes from the defensive side of the ball, while our @Jeff Howe will discuss Arch Manning and the offense shortly. *** First and foremost, phenom early enrollee Justus Terry was limited today. I do not know the extent of the limitation, but he was off to the side to begin practice. Colton Vasek also was up on that field. *** Depth Charts on Day 1 First Team: EDGE Colin Simmons DL Hero Kanu DL Alex January EDGE Ethan Burke LB Anthony Hill Jr. LB Liona Lefua STAR Wardell Mack DB Michael Taaffe DB Jelani McDonald CB Jaylon Guilbeau CB Manny Muhammad – Jaylon Guilbeau was the first cornerback on the field opposite of Manny Muhammad. – Zina Umeozulu took a rep at first team edge in place of Colin Simmons to begin the drill, but partially because I believe he was late getting over to the drill. Simmons received an extensive one on one technique session prior with a Texas staffer. – Jelani McDonald was back deep at safety with Michael Taaffe. McDonald of course will also be seeing time at nickel this spring. Second Team DL Melvin Hills DL Cole Brevard EDGE Zina Umeozulu EDGE Lance Jackson LB Ty'Anthony Smith LB Trey Moore STAR Ryan Niblett DB Xavier Filsaime DB Jordan Johnson-Rubell CB Warren Roberson CB Kobe Black – Obviously, some changes and new looks here for the Longhorn defense. Trey Moore was in the middle of the field as an off-ball linebacker next to Ty'Anthony Smith. That allowed for Lance Jackson and Zina Umeozulu to get reps together in the team pursuit drills. – Cole Brevard will eventually filter into the first team unit as well. – Interesting to see Ryan Niblett was at STAR to begin pursuit. It was JJR and Filsaime who remained back deep for the first pursuit look. Special Teams We did not see kickers today, so save the questions. Punt returners included: Aaron Butler, Daylan McCutcheon, and Ryan Wingo. Butler had a very rough start with three consecutive punts hitting the ground to start the day. Jack Bouwmeester was the first punter. *** More Notes and Nuggets – Zelus Hicks, man, he is a big early enrollee. We knew that coming in, but he towers over a few defensive backs and already has a quality frame to back it up. He is listed at 6–2 and 189 pounds on the Texas spring roster. – New Texas DL transfer Travis Shaw showcased a really quick first step. That was one of his big selling points at North Carolina and it was evident today. Which is key, he is listed at 350 pounds, but I wouldn't necessarily say he looked that big. On the defensive line as a whole, there is plenty of mass. Texas is averaged nearly 335 pounds per body in the interior and Kenny Baker closely teaching his guys. While he was not with the first unit above, Cole Brevard looked tremendous. I think he is going to be your starter by camp's end. – I was encouraged to see the frame of Caleb Chester in person for the first time today. Lengthy arms and is listed at 6–1. – One thing that is worth mentioning is the coach to player ratio is significantly lower this year. Of course, Texas added a few more position coaches this season with the change of the NCAA rules, but it was very evident to me. Texas has more teaching going on in day one than I have seen in previous year. The defensive backs specifically did a 3-4 man station groups today. They would rotate from Akina, Hudson, Orphey and back.
  8. Jeff Howe Quarterback is where we’ll begin our notes and observations from the first Texas spring practice on Tuesday morning at Denius Fields. On Texas Football was on hand for a media viewing window, getting our first look at coach Steve Sarkisian’s 2025 squad. Trey Owens and KJ Lacey worked behind Arch Manning in drills. While all three quarterbacks had what could be described as a typical first day throwing the football (not all throws were perfect, and those on target weren’t always hauled in), Lacey’s arm talent was noticeable in his first college practice. Everything Lacey (6-0, 182) did was quick and smooth. He didn’t look like a true freshman early enrollee on the practice field for the first time. — The story of the viewing window in the backfield was Christian Clark's presence. The 6-foot, 214-pound redshirt freshman is roughly seven months removed from an Achilles injury that ended his true freshman campaign before it started, but he was taking handoffs and participating in drills the OTF staff observed on Tuesday. — The first impression of the Longhorn wide receiver didn’t leave anyone with a warm, fuzzy feeling walking off the practice field. Ryan Wingo stood out in the first group (with Deandre Moore Jr. sidelined with a toe injury, Daylon McCutcheon was the No. 1 slot receiver in drills, with Parker Livingstone lined up opposite Wingo). Still, there were too many drops for Sarkisian or Chris Jackson’s liking while the media was present. Aaron Butler and Kaliq Lockett worked behind Livingstone at the X receiver (field) position. Jaime Ffrench was running behind Wingo with the Z receivers (boundary). — There were no surprises with the first-team offensive line. Trevor Goosby (left tackle), Neto Umeozulu (left guard), Cole Hutson (center), DJ Campbell (right guard) and Brandon Baker (right tackle) made up the first unit. One note with the second group is that true freshman Nick Brooks was working as the second-team left tackle behind Goosby. OTF has heard from multiple sources that the staff is high on Brooks, left guard Nate Kibble and right tackle Andre Cojoe entering the spring.
  9. Parker Livingstone had a heck of a first practice during their viewing window. - Bobby Ffrench looked the best of the freshmen receivers - Gerry First two TE's were Washington and Shannon.....after 1 practice Emaree Winston may be surprise of the class. -Bobby Some interesting notes so far from OTF rapid reactions
  10. How do we embed videos of tweets?
  11. I'm fairly certain that is Goosby's job, no competition
  12. I'm not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure 99% of the time the women's tournament is like that every time.
  13. Gerry Some thoughts ... On the move in Austin Monday afternoon, I spoke with another source on the Texas No. 1 ranked class. The word received was a very focused, and mature group of 22. To say Texas is pleased with the freshman to this point would be an understatement. All three WR's received mention, again. Three DB's too - Zelus Hicks, Kade Phillips and Gracescon Littleton ahead early on. Nick Brooks continues to receive praise. As does Justus Terry. James Simon, Elijah Barnes and K.J. Lacey have at times as well. Spring practice ... The Arch Manning era officially begins today. It will be a wild ride of the media building him up (making money off of it), and tearing him down (making money off that). Make no mistake, he will be the most publicized, and scrutinized football player in my two+ decades in the industry. It already happened in high school, and that was just the beginning. Battles worth watching: Right tackle with Brandon Baker the favorite over Andre Cojoe, but Cojoe has had his best off-season yet by far. D.J. Campbell and Neto Umeozulu with Nate Kibble ready challenge one or both depending on where Kyle Flood plays Kibble the majority of snaps. Cole Hutson vs. Connor robertson and Daniel Cruz at center. The corner opposite Malik Muhammad. Jaylon Guilbeau, Kobe Black, potentially Santana Wilson and possibly Kade Phillips competing for the spot. Both kick off and punt return. Kicker between Bert Auburn and Will Stone.
  14. Aaliyah Chavez announcement 1pm CST. If I were forced to make a pick, as of late yesterday afternoon, it would be trending to Oklahoma. But Texas Tech was trying to come over the top of everyone late Monday. -Gerry
