Those of you who were on campus in the early 80s may recall that Student Government had been eliminated years earlier. A group of students led by Paul Begala (yes, that Paul Begala) pushed to resurrect it. Of course Paul - wanting it for his resume - was the candidate for SB President. There was a campaign to put Hank The Hallucination from the Daily Texan cartoon Eyebeam on the ballot for President (or maybe as a write-in vote). Begala and company were so worried that they would lose to a fictional cartoon character/middle finger candidate that they had the rules changed. No one gave a shit about Student Government, but Paul got his resume padded.

And it didn't matter, as Hank still got the most votes.  I also remember someone constructed a larger-than-life image of Hank the Hallucination in Littlefield fountain during the campaign.  It was hilarious...and you're right; nobody gave a shit about student government then, other than to mock the very concept, and I'd bet that is still the case today.

  2. JMHO, but the whole concept of student government is kind of stupid.  Maybe they should hold a referendum on whether to disband student government; it happened before, make it happen again.

I am such a big fan of Eastwood's westerns. A handful of fantastic ones I didn't see mentioned yet:

    1. Two Mules for Sister Sara
    2. Hang 'Em High
    3. Joe Kidd
    4. High Plains Drifter (my personnel favorite)
    5. Pale Rider

No love for Paint Your Wagon?

  4. Not directly an anti-communist movie, but these two scenes are classic.  Early December of 1979, I was a freshman, and Patton was showing in the theater in the Union.  This was shortly after the U.S. embassy in Tehran had been overrun, and the Russians had recently invaded Afghanistan.  Needless to say, feelings were running strong.  The theater was packed, and everyone exploded in cheers when Patton made his thoughts on the Russians known to Gen. Bedell Smith.  I think everyone left the theater that night wanting to kick some commie ass.

  5. G.C. Scarborough in Houston, when I graduated in 1979 had Texas Fight as their fight song.  The only things I liked about that school were that the colors were burnt orange and white, and the fight song.

The one thing that Brad Holmes has going for him from previous lions GMs is he seems to know how to draft. And has found some late round gems. Lots of draft capital this year and a ton of cap space to shore up the defense and the lions should be really solid next season. Finally some hope for lions fans

Didn't quite catch that...can you run it by me again?

So the Packers game is meaningless?

Not totally meaningless for the Lions.  When sideline reporter asked Detroit HC about how the team stays motivated after they were eliminated from playoffs, he replied, "We don't want them to go either."  If GB loses, they're out of the playoffs and Seattle is in.

This is why Beard was DOA as soon as that call was made regardless of whatever really happened.  The only way he had a chance to keep his job was (i) sufficient recant by Randi + cleared of all charges and (ii) the relationship being completely over (and frankly evidence that he was leaving her which instigated everything).  He obviously needed her to play ball in order to get a statement out of her (i.e., likely some continuation of a relationship) and I don't think the statement provided by Randi was even sufficient to satisfy(i) as it was clearly drafted by her lawyer to protect her against charges she filed a false police report.   I mean his only shot was a retraction so strong Randi risked being charged over it while he was able to simultaneously drag her through the mud while telling his side of the story.  That's what it would have taken absent actual evidence she made it all up.  Was just never going to happen.

That's probably only part of it.  My guess is that he would also have had to express remorse and contrition for the incident, and agreed to undergo anger management and/or substance abuse counseling while on suspension.  The fact that he, through his lawyer, continued to contend that he did absolutely nothing wrong, and would be found completely innocent indicates that none of this was going to happen, and the fact that there are now photos of him in a prison jump suit standing before the man indicate that he did, in fact, do something wrong.  And one more thing...why the fuck was she in NYC with the team?  Since when did people start taking their significant others on business trips?

Moose’s xmas present to himself this year is to upgrade his standard AR-15 (5.56).

I’m not a gun geek and when I tried to go down the rabbit hole that is AR upgrades the sheer volume of choices hurt my head.

So I figured I’d just ask Surly what they would add to my Windham Weaponry MPC?

Nothing...it's perfect as is.  Ok, maybe a sling, but I prefer simplicity.
