  1. Can someone explain something about playing basic strategy? I realize that this was supposedly worked out on a computer a long time ago to figure out the best plays to give players the best chance of losing the least amount of money, but I'm wondering if some of the more experienced players on here can share their observations and experience on how well the basic strategy works. I think many players just blindly accept it as "the way" and bet accordingly whether they are winning or losing. The reason I'm asking is that I've noticed that the basic strategy chart says that you always double your elevens. My experience is that this rarely results in a win for the player. The problem I see is that when you double, you are only allowed to draw one card, and my experience has shown that the one card you draw is typically a 2, 3 or 4. The only advantage I can see is to take your one card face down and hope for a dealer bust, which brings up another question. I've seen several other players agonize over whether to take the card face up or face down. I just don't see any advantage to taking the card face up. Am I missing something? Anyway, any advice or words of wisdom regarding basic strategy would be welcome.

  3. Is that a gift or a warning? 😉
  4. I think you mean Barry Bonds. I remember seeing them at Disch-Falk, and all the Wild Bunch guys pointing him out saying, "That's Bobby Bonds's kid". I also remember every time Odibie McDowell came up to bat, they'd break out singing, "You outta be in pictures". I miss those guys. They were almost as entertaining as the games.
  5. Obviously, it's impossible to say what someone would have produced later in life had they not died at an early age, but I disagree with this take. I've read biographies and interviews that lead me to believe that Hendrix might have been on the verge of a whole new, and completely different phase of his career. A lot of the malaise that affected the last year or so of his career stemmed from issues with his management, specifically Mike Jeffries. Jimi was getting tired of the wild man pop star image that made him famous, but the fans demanded, and Jeffries insisted on continuing with the Purple Haze, Foxey Lady, etc. style of "hit" music, and Jimi wanted to expand beyond this. This, and issues with Noel Redding not being happy festered through late 1968 and lead to the breakup of the original "Experience" lineup in spring of 1969. After experimenting with various personnel lineups through the rest of '69, Jimi had settled on a new trio in early 1970 with Billy Cox replacing Noel on bass. I have read that in late 1969 or so, Jimi was having conversations with Miles Davis, yes, THAT Miles Davis, about collaborating. As I understand it, Miles Davis' album Bitches Brew was conceived to be part of that collaboration, but Jimi unfortunately had contractual commitments that prevented his participation. All of this was going on while Jimi was also trying to get his new studio, Electric Lady Studio, completed. After returning to Europe in late summer 1970 to complete some concert commitments, Jimi's management contract with Mike Jeffries was set to expire in October or November of 1970, at which time Jimi had planned to return to the U.S. and find new management. I recall reading what I think was Jimi's last interview, where he said that he was looking forward to returning to the States, and some of the things he wanted to do included learning how to read and write musical notation, and he was really looking forward to studying music theory. This desire of his to deepen his musical knowledge, along with his contact with a jazz icon like Miles Davis lead me to believe that if Jimi had survived and made it back to the U.S., he would have been off to a whole new plane of musical exploration and experimentation. Unfortunately, we'll never know, thanks to Monica Danneman.

  7. Lots of repetition in this list, but this is what I've got, in no particular order: 1) Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and the Comets 2) Jailhouse Rock - Elvis 3) Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry 4) Good Vibrations - Beach Boys 5) Like a Rolling Stone - Dylan 6) Hard Day's Night - Beatles 7) Sympathy For the Devil - Stones 8 Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream 9) All Along the Watchtower - Jimi 10) Rock and Roll - Zeppelin Honorable Mention: Substitute - The Who Money - Pink Floyd Mean Streets - Van Halen Foot Stompin' Music - Grand Funk Railroad I'm sure I'll think of others later.

  10. Slipped.....HA! Yeah, he "slipped" to avoid getting buried.
  11. The funny thing about Penn State getting upset at Nixon "declaring" Texas to be National Champions is that Nixon had no say in the matter. Texas were National Champs based on going in to the last game of the season undefeated and ranked number 1, beating another undefeated team, number 2 ranked Arkansas in their own house. Any belief that Penn State had that they should have been number 1 is just stupid and their decision to not settle the question on the playing field was cowardly.
  12. That may have been an issue for Syracuse in 1960 (Which, BTW, didn't prevent them from playing and winning) but not for PSU in 1969. That is just the excuse they used to avoid getting their asses kicked.
  13. Not sure this is true any more. Look at Marshawn Lynch, another good RB known for his toughness and "unique" persona and off the field behavior, but was beloved by pretty much everyone. At worst, the attitude towards him was that he was just a character, and the NFL needs more characters. It's especially these days, when nearly every play ends with someone doing the "look at me" screaming, flexing, pounding their chest and/or screaming at the sky, shit talking is just not the trigger it used to be.
  14. These GMC trucks with the crab walk "feature"...what is the point? Seems like a complicated solution looking for a problem to solve. Am I missing something?
  15. This kid is probably about 19 or 20 now, and maybe a student at Ohio State. Hopefully, he gets to re-live this early formative nightmare:
  16. 1) Reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it? 2) Heisman voters? You talking about Heisman voters? Are these the same Heisman voters that awarded their trophy to the likes of Johnny Manziel, Eric Crouch, Gino Torretta, Jason White, et al? GTFO with that shit.
  17. Yes, and it still does. It was Texas's offensive ineptitude in the third quarter that led to Texas's defensive exhaustion in the fourth quarter which led to Skattebo being able to make casual observers believe he's some unstoppable superman. He is an above average college RB who was absolutely shut down for 3 quarters, and took advantage of his opportunity in the 4th. He even kept taking himself out of the game in short yardage situations in the third. Not exactly what an unstoppable "warrior" would do. I am just tired of the popular narrative being shoveled about this game. I finally got around to listening to some of the national "experts" talking about this, and heard everything from, "Arizona State completely controlled this game right from the start", to "Skattebo was completely unstoppable, he was like a man among boys out there", to "There is nothing he can't do" before finally acknowledging (reluctantly) that Texas actually won the game. I swear if you hadn't watched the game, and didn't know the final score, you'd swear that Texas got boatraced.
  18. Seems like you started watching the game half way through the 3rd quarter. I don't understand how anyone who watched the first 3 and a half quarters can think that Skattebo is anything but an above average college player.
  19. Is this Arizona State Legend, Jake the Snake Plummer? At first I was wondering who the homeless guy on the sideline was, and why ESPN kept showing him, Then Tessitore informed me...repeatedly.
  20. I don't get this. I'll admit, the guy is tough as nails, and he ended with impressive stats, but can we stop with the "you can't bring the guy down" B.S.? How many times was he stuffed on 3rd or 4th and short? Seems like it happened quite a lot in the first 3 quarters. He did his damage after the 'Horns D was pretty gassed after playing what seemed like 14 minutes of the 3rd.
  21. THANK YOU!!! This ad campaign is stupid af and unfunny.
