    Horror

First of all I really appreciate all the recommendations. I'm enjoying diving into this genre that is relatively new to me. This guy is a terrible writer. The plot and story are good but all his characters are cliches. You have a soulful native American quaker who speaks as if he's reciting parables. At one point he says "I have violence in my hands but peace in my heart". And Wendig writes like a 14 year old girl. I had to check to see if "Chuck" Wendig was a young woman, but no he's a middle aged dude. It's like if "how do you do fellow kids" were an author. And he does this thing where he writes people's secret thoughts in parentheses. It's annoying and amateurish. Regardless, there's sufficient gore and the story is good. It's a unique concept about evil apples affecting the people who eat them and the repercussions. If you can power through the cringe, and there's a lot of cringe, it's not bad. He's a much better writer than Wendig. Still, I found the characters were sort of weak. I think that's normal for genre fiction. Not scary but really creepy. It's a great concept, a guy retelling stories from his childhood. Each chapter you think you're reading a normal story until you get to the last couples sentence and it sheds new light on the memory that makes it extremely creepy. It's well executed. Next I'm gonna try to get my hands on Between Two Fires.
  6. This play by play girl's radio dj voice is annoying af.
  7. Among many other things, I hope there's an origin story for why the dog is wearing a cape.
  8. We need a "trivial music thoughts that don't warrant a whole thread" topic. I was thinking about the greatest guitar solos that are easy to play. Maybe not greatest, but my favorite. I came up with 3: Just What I Needed by the Cars Keep On Loving You by REO Home Sweet Home by Motley Crue
  9. Ha! I'm not familiar with Peter Pan but you're right. I guess it's a hodge lodge of references. The animated Treasure Planet is underrated.
  10. Really interesting video of a cover made on the spot. A shoe gaze version of Dreams. I think it's pretty good and it's interesting.

  13. Just started ep 3. A treasure planet? Captain "Silvo"? Kind of on the nose.
  14. I think this is a teaser trailer for a teaser trailer coming out tomorrow. Is that Mrs. Maisel as Lois Lane?

    Horror

I just finished Brother by Ania Ahlborn. This book got a lot of hype in social media. It was okay. I guess I was expecting a lot more. It's got a good plot that keeps you turning pages, the writing is okay but the character development could have been better. It's about a Texas Chainsaw Massacre-type family in Appalachia, told from the perspective of the family members, two of the brothers in particular. One of the brothers isn't particularly jazzed about the family "hobby" of killing and dismembering women, and the other brother is a pure psychopath. A lot of the gore happens off screen, so to speak or is alluded to you so it's not particularly gory although there's some of that. The atmosphere is totally bleak.

  17. If there's ever a fire at the Marriott Marquis San Diego, the men will die before they're able to find those stairs.
  18. Looking forward to season 3. From season 2, I thought the actress who played Daphne was incredible. Makes me want to look up her other work.

    Infinite jest

Broom of the System is a thousand times easier to get through than Infinite Jest. DF Wallace's nonfiction essays are a joy to read but his fiction is just too much, too meta. He did predict that irony would be the downfall of us all.

Had anyone read "We Used to Live Here"? From what I've heard, aside from it being extremely creepy I'm gonna need a flowchart to keep things straight.
  21. Everything reminds me of her
  22. I am genuinely disappointed that the producers rejected this version on Hermione. A black and a middle aged male Hermione. Would've been off the hook.
