  1. another option is the la belle foundation - https://www.labellefoundation.org/ https://www.instagram.com/thelabellefoundation/ they are great, but i'm biased on this. we fostered chuggy ^ and his siblings last july and kept chuggy (#fosterfail). one of our best friends adopted his brother so they get to hang out all the time. we were dogsitting the brother (snarls) last week when we evacuated, but timed it perfectly to get to his place in marina del rey right when he got back in town. they've got a huge following and have already gotten a bunch of help. several celebrities have fostered/adopted from there so they have a big presence on ig. glen powell's dog brisket is from la belle. the problem is that other shelters who get dozens of dogs (and other animals) rely on them pretty heavily and they're a small operation. we get occasional texts like "are you interested in a new lab puppy for 2-3 weeks?" last week we got an email that said something like "we have 225+ new dogs and cats, send help." we dropped a bunch of beds, toys, pee pads, and other assorted stuff we either purchased or had leftover from the chaos of fostering 3 puppies at once. long story short, they're local, they do a good job, and they take in animals from about 12-15 different shelters (and that was before the fires). our pups were dumped at some shithole shelter in kern county at 3 days old and somehow made their way to la belle (west la). i can't imagine the shit going on over there, but on their instagram they were like "we have bunnies now!" so who knows. bottom line, you can go on amazon and order them pet supplies and it will get used asap. sometimes that can be better than sending $, especially if you're worried about a % disappearing, which unfortunately is a real issue.
  2. to properly explain what it was like yesterday when the evacuation notice was legit - while we were packing, my phone and my wife's phone got simultaneous alerts (like an amber alert). at the same time, both our phones were ringing and our landline was ringing. yes, we have a landline. if you're familiar with west wing, there's a scene where will bailey is still living in a hotel, and they need him to get back to the white house at like 2am. toby decides he should get the full white house treatment. while he slept, his cell phone rang, his hotel phone rang, his pager went off, and a guy from the front desk was pounding on his door saying he had white house operator on the line. it was pretty much like that.
  3. la alert system just sent errant message to millions of people that they were in an evacuation zone. then had to issue an alert that it was a mistake. it was only meant for kenneth fire area. i'm sure twitter is having fun with it.
  4. not voting for newsom. from what i understand, he single-handedly caused this. all of the bonkers candidates who ran against him in the recall would’ve had this handled with a few rakes.
  5. signing off from marina del rey. i grabbed 3 bottles of bourbon, my wife packed for a month, and we had 2 puppies with us. fun field trip but hoping to return in the am. sunset fire somehow went nw which was lucky.
  6. yeah, it might be time to bounce.
  7. for july 4th, 2024, we went to a restaurant on the beach, ubered to my cousin's in the palisades, then walked with half of the party to the high school up the street to watch fireworks. 6 months later all 3 are gone. this is also one of those frustrating situations where everyone "wants to help" but the best thing for everybody to do (assuming you're not evacuating), is to stay home to let others get where they need to go. pretty helpless feeling. we're donating to a couple of animal shelters because they're about to get inundated by animals running out of the woods. apologies if that's political.
  8. “seems pretty foolish for a state to be unprepared for a worst-case scenario weather event.” -texas people as temps drop
  9. for those asking isolated questions about how it gets like this and why it's so hard to contain, please remember that we've basically been in a drought for over 100 years and this is one of the driest seasons on record. it hasn't rained here in 8 months. so as far as scooping a bunch of non-salt water to drop on the fires, those levels are already horrifyingly low. add the winds, which are bad on their own (think hurricane without the rain), and shit spreads fast and makes life hard on first responders. winds cause trees to fall and shit to fly into power lines which fall and start fires. i'm sure some were started by lit cigs, bbq mishaps, or jewish space lasers, but huge winds always start fires. there are at least 4 independent fires going right now, which is insanely rare (typically one fire spreads but they're all connected). also remember, many of these communities, especially ones in the hills have one way in and one way out. when people are fleeing and firetrucks are trying to get in/out, it's almost impossible. anyone familiar with how la is on a map can tell you how few options you have just to get from the city to the valley and how clogged those roads get, and that's before trees/random objects are blocking roads. the news just literally said "please don't use water today if you can avoid it, even if you're nowhere near the fires". i've never heard that. i'm gonna go watch chinatown. @Sbbruin glad you're safe. let's meet up at a shitty palm springs casino. don't bring your cats.
  10. bullwinkle has survived. i was sent to get breakfast.
  11. the winds are slowing in places and its light out now so the choppers are back up. we lost power several times through the night but back on now. 4 separate fires all pretty much with 0% containment. insanity.
  12. earlier today a couple blocks from me: a city bus hit a fire hydrant literally across the street from the fire house. only in la.
  13. wife just packed our go-bags but we should be ok to stay. cousin’s house in palisades is “gone”. friends in pasadena, la canada, malibu are without power and have bailed out east. we’re watching a friend’s puppy that is brothers with our puppy and his place in mdr is empty so we thought of heading there. local news confirms there is nothing can be done to fight the fire until sunrise, and the next 6-8 hours are expected to be the worst yet. i will either hit the throttle on the bourbon or take the 10 to the 15 to caesar’s. maybe all of the above.
  14. it wasn’t and it isn’t.
  15. the legend lives on, even though he likely died many years ago at the hands of a taxi he threw himself in front of in hopes of a fat settlement. rest in power, u.r. 🙏🏻
  16. they're both ripping off welcome back kotter.

  20. things that bother me are typically small script issues, not plot stuff. there could be a 500 page thread about movie plotholes. stfu and enjoy your popcorn, it's a movie. here are a couple that bother me when i hear/see them. in jerry maguire, during the cardinals v cowboys game when cuba gooding gets hurt, one of the announcers (gifford?) says something like "well, at a time like this, you just hope his family is not watching this." ok, i know he's not an actor, but come on. it's the end of the season, cardinals are hot, challenging the cowboys for the division, he's the star player having a breakout season, and they're playing a close game on monday night football. yeah, his family probably has a lot going on, they'll just read about it in the paper the next day. another one is old school. they have a big party, and it's clearly friday night. will ferrell talks about how he can't drink because he has "a nice little saturday" planned in the famous bb&b/home depot scene. then the next day, everybody is back at the office, kids (both high school and college) are back in class. it's a fucking saturday and it's not that hard to write it that way. also, for the "a few good men" mentions, he didn't need the big payoff to win the case. he had the two conflicting orders - that's where jessup got caught. "sometimes men take matters into their own hands", "no, you made it clear your men never take matters into their own hands, your men follow orders or people die."
  21. hmm, how should i put this? if you liked "dead to me", you'll like it. about 20 min in, i asked if this was by the same creator, and looked it up and it was (i hadn't seen the trailer which says it is). the tone and structure are very similar. it's built to binge on netflix.
  22. kinda.
  23. you can just say "seinfeld".
