  1. springer is lucky he's doing his 3-38 (or whatever it is) while the team is 14-2.  he looks lost at the plate.

you could tell how stoked he was when he homered on wed, or even when he walked last night.

hopefully he'll get it together when others settle down.  or maybe he'll just wait until g2 of the world series again.  either way.

  2. here's the "glaring" problem with our bullpen - nobody is great/lockdown.

typically, in your average bullpen, you have 2-3 guys who are awesome, and you totally trust.  then you have the other guys, who are not very awesome, and you know you can't depend on them, especially in a close game.

our "issue" if you want to call it that, is that everyone is capable of being awesome on a given night, and as a unit, they've been very strong all year, but we don't have 2-3 guys who we know can close out a game after 6-7 strong innings out of a starter.  and while everyone is quick to pick on giles, the blown games this season have been a group effort.  devo, harris, smith, giles, peacock - everyone has had some ugly blowups.  outside of mchugh maybe, who's been great, but certainly isn't used in that 1 inning we need outs type of situation very often.

our bullpen numbers are great, but i don't know how our best 2-3 guys stack up against other teams' best 2-3 guys.  even if/when we add an arm, i don't think he'll be discernibly better than what we have, so we'll hope for the best.  and we'll add lmj and possibly morty to the mix.

  3. unless we trade for jansen, kimbrel, or chapman (obviously not going to happen), then you guys are crazy, stoned, or downright kidding yourselves if you think we're gonna roll into october with defined roles in the bullpen, including closer.

hinch won a world series managing the pen by feel, vision, and a healthy dose of mccann's input.  we may see a save from giles, rondon, devo, whatever - but we'll also see 2ip from peacock, the back 3-4 innings from mccullers or mchugh - we're gonna see all sorts of shit.  we have 7 starters worthy of a rotation spot, and likely only 3 will start in the playoffs, maybe 4.  we have 10-12 good to great arms total and we'll likely add another.

whatever it takes to win, that's what we're gonna do in oct.

It's also a trend to enjoy focusing on the faults of a show.  I've fallen into that trap on shows/movies that I generally liked for what they were, but finding myself highlighting it's faults over it's success.

just went back and read the shaggy thread on Ozark, and every other post in the damn thing is about a gaping plot hole or some nonsensical shit that's so blatant you can't ignore it. also the lighting. jesus, that lighting.

a somewhat disturbing trend with streaming shows is the inevitable "fizzling" out at the end of a season.  these shows somehow get a pass for this, because most people watch it like a long movie (binge).  they may have been kinda let down on a sunday afternoon between 3-6pm so it's not a huge deal.  but if this was a network show, and the entire last month went downhill and got shitty, people would be ripping it and wanting it cancelled.  the world we live in.

The show is kind of jumping up and down in one place. Gilead is bad and Liz Moss is sad.

The show has kind of fallen in love with itself like The Walking Dead did. You see this in the way so much of the show is reaction to tragedy where the surviving characters lament and wallow in shock. The creators seem to think that we're all bonding over the repeated close ups of Moss' sad or angry face. I would just like to have a little more story.

I agree about Moss' excellence in acting with her face. The writers seem to be using that as a crutch instead of actually dramatizing anything. The best part of the season was Moss and Serena collaborating, but that didn't go anywhere.

Hope they figure it out during hiatus. I liked the first season.

agreed with this.  since the whole boston globe arc, there really hasn't been any type of progress (except the canada episode, kinda).  unfortunately, with moss super preggo, some sort of daring escape is unlikely.  in fact, the way they're setting it up almost seems like she won't try anything until she has the baby, so that she's essentially rescuing herself and the baby from this hell.

one of two things is happening - either (1) they're hammering us with this bleak, beating of a story, which is totally unnecessary, but will make the payoff work when/if it happens, or (2) they're lingering in the same place for way too long because they simply don't have too much story to tell, and so they're stretching it out.

1 could work, 2 would really suck.  i'm worried that getting moss to canada is the ending, but it really doesn't need to be.  with the introduction of the american guy, i would hope there could be a separate story of a revolution and america "attacking" gilead.  (sidenote - is the rest of "america" just in hawaii?  are they spread around the country just not in major east coast cities?  it's really hard to tell how big gilead's reach is).

someone who has a better grasp of political history maybe can provide the perfect parallel, but how would you describe gilead's trip to canada?  would that be like cuba or china sending diplomats to the states 30 years ago?  would it be like nazi's coming to the states in 1939?  they seemed so pleased to be welcomed in canada and so surprised at the massive protests (by not just displaced americans) and then so confused when they were asked to leave.  i think that's partly a fuckup by canadians to allow the trip in the first place, but maybe they had some other secret motives working behind the scenes.  clearly the american guy had an agenda.

i really hope they get into the politics of it all.  i want the show to resolve itself with gilead getting dismantled/overthrown, not just june escaping and reuniting with her husband and lesbo pal.

i don't want to derail this thread, especially because it's not a thread about the proposal, but (assuming the above story is true), this man needs to be in federal prison.  i'm not gonna shame the woman for not coming forward, as i know that's unfortunately something that happens, but essentially "coming forward" on facebook is just as bad.  go to the fucking cops, and put an end to this con artist and the older men (rapists) he fucking runs his scams with.

am i taking crazy pills?  what is the upside to ranting on your facebook page but not getting the authorities involved.  jesus.

Held off on GoT until last summer. Never was a fantasy guy and it never appealed to me. Started season 1 last August and didn’t lay off the gas until I finished season 7 a couple months later. Amazing TV.

yeah, agreed on the fantasy.  obviously it goes into some of that territory, but it really helped that from the beginning, it was based in reality, with some mystical shit sprinkled in.  i find myself still losing interest when it goes too far down that road.

  9. ok, i found the numbers.

this year we are 17-11 vs lhp and 33-15 vs rhp.

last year we were 21-24 vs lhp and 80-37 vs rhp.

2016 we were 27-26 vs lhp and 57-52 vs rhp.

2015 we were 30-31 vs lhp and 56-45 vs rhp.

i'm not saying why it is what it is, but this is what it is.

Do you think playing against LHP makes our pitchers worse?  Makes the distribution of our successful PAs less conducive for scoring runs?  I don't get the relevance of the question.

i could be imagining it, but if i had to break it down, i would say we struggle against above average lefties the most.  then above average righties.  then feast on shitty righties, then feast the most on shitty lefties, inflating the small-ish sample size.

like i said, without the w/l numbers or game breakdowns, there's no way to tell if i'm just selectively remembering things, but i could spot the snell game from 10 days out and knew it would be trouble.  just sick of soft throwing lefties like wood/hill in last year's ws mystifying us.

there was definitely a point in the last couple of years where comments were made about how we weren't good against lefties from a w/l perspective, which didn't seem to make sense, since we have a bunch of good rh hitters with seemingly good numbers.

Sausage Party crossed a few lines and got beat up in the press pretty bad. Django crossed lines, but is too old for this thread. Nonetheless, Tarantino would probably get a pass if he remade Amos and Andy. The problem isn't snowflakes, actors, or directors, as much as gutless studios and the need to make tons of money overseas.

not sure gutless is the right word.  risk-averse is probably more accurate.  making money keeps studio execs at their jobs.  they have no reason to jeopardize this.

every now and then, a movie genre, typically comedy or horror, shows everyone that a movie can cost a little and make a lot.  get out did this on a 22 day shoot with a first time director and small-ish actors.  there will be more horror.  then in the next year or two, a movie like hangover or bridesmaids or whatever will come out, and comedy will be back again.

to me the bigger issue is the total absence of the action comedy.  beverly hills cop perfected this and plenty after it did well (even fletch is sorta like this), all up until what, the first bad boys?  as far as cop movies go, the other guys was pretty funny.  if comedic actors like eddie murphy get cast in action, that's great.  that's what deadpool is essentially.  when the rock is in 2/3 action movies, well, he ain't funny.

  12. from the "fantasy is easy to predict" category - brandon nimmo is leading the nl in slugging.  trevor story (selected 96th in our draft) is leading mlb in rbi.  ross stripling is #1 on pr30 for sp.

    Maybe...

Like those guys that were in that movie? The 40-year-old Virgin? Some of those guys, right? I mean, that was a while back, but it was also kinda the start of their careers?

the timing of this post is funny, because paul rudd has now been kidnapped by the comic book superhero movies mentioned about 3 posts earlier.  rogen is definitely churning out comedies, though not all land.  steve carell's career has taken a more serious turn.  jonah hill goes back and forth.  being nominated for oscars will probably keep him from doing too much straight comedy.
