  1. Well he did just sign an executive order that says he alone interprets the law, so I'm sure everything is gonna work out just fine
  2. Newest EO straight up says that the executive is responsible for interpreting the law https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/02/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-reins-in-independent-agencies-to-restore-a-government-that-answers-to-the-american-people/ I can't wait to see Roberts overturn Marbury v Madison to roll out the modern American version of the Enabling Act of 1933
  3. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-says-ukraine-should-never-have-started-it-remarks-war-russia-rcna192710 Trump says Ukraine 'should have never started it' in comments about war with Russia Trump made the remark while deriding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose country was invaded by Russia in February 2022. President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that Ukraine was responsible for Russia's invasion of the country three years ago, arguing Kyiv could have made a deal to avoid the conflict. “You should have never started it,” Trump said of Ukraine while criticizing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had expressed concern that his country was not included in talks between the U.S. and Russia in Saudi Arabia. "I think I have the power to end this war, and I think it's going very well. But today I heard, 'Oh, well, we weren't invited.' Well, you've been there for three years," Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort. "You should have never started it. You could have made a deal." US, Russia meet to talk end of Ukraine war — without Zelenskyy Trump went on to say: "I could have made a deal for Ukraine that would have given them almost all of the land, everything, almost all of the land, and no people would have been killed, and no city would have been demolished, and not one dome would have been knocked down. But they chose not to do it that way."
  4. First the people that maintain and ensure the viability of our nuclear arsenal, now the folks who are trying to contain the avian flu outbreak https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/doge/usda-accidentally-fired-officials-bird-flu-rehire-rcna192716 The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that, over the weekend, it accidentally fired "several" agency employees who are working on the federal government's response to the H5N1 avian flu outbreak. The agency said it is now trying to quickly reverse the firings. "Although several positions supporting [bird flu efforts] were notified of their terminations over the weekend, we are working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters," a USDA spokesperson said in a statement. "USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service frontline positions are considered public safety positions, and we are continuing to hire the workforce necessary to ensure the safety and adequate supply of food to fulfill our statutory mission."
  5. There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
  6. Truly a Brave New World. What a fucking Orwellian nightmare - the ruling oligarch has a 24/7 shoutbox into literally every pocket in the country by virtue of FCC-mandated emergency messaging systems. It never ceases to boggle the mind how much an antisocial fucknugget can take useful mechanisms for a healthy society and twist them into another expression of their power over everyone else.
  7. "I am not going to accept ultimatums. It’s interesting — if we didn’t accept these ultimatums in our most difficult moment, why would anyone think we would accept them now?" — Zelensky about US/Russia negotiations (quote translated by my browser) Zelensky recently commented on the Molotov-Ribbentrop Trump-Putin talks while on a visit to Ankara
  8. My wife and I moved from FB messenger to Signal years ago before RCS messaging fixed our iOS<->Android messaging woes. Signal is great, easy to use, and works across multiple devices seamlessly
  9. Ya know, when I see Rex/Porterhouse/Beeper have made massive contributions to the climate thread I just know it's valuable insights and not just "anyone who disagrees with me is Greta" Never change, you gasbag.
  10. Hey where are all the former free speech absolutists of surly? They sure have gotten quiet and disappeared completely after all the censorship has been happening under the command of their culture war avatars
  11. Also didn't have nukes in 1938.
  12. And then cynically and fraudulently argue that it's fine because the Dems did it first. We've already had one round of concentration camps built off that logic, I'm sure we'll get some bang-up upgrades this go-round
  13. Pravda: Zelenskyy: US saying things today that are very pleasing to Putin President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the rhetoric of the United States is now aimed at pleasing Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and speeding up the conclusion of a certain "peace deal". Source: Zelenskyy in an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, as reported by European Pravda Details: Zelenskyy commented on the possibility of territorial concessions to Russia in the upcoming "peace talks," emphasising that Ukraine "will not surrender its territories legally".

  15. Trump administration pressures Romania to lift restrictions on Andrew Tate The Trump administration has pressured Romanian authorities to lift travel restrictions on the self-described misogynist influencer Andrew Tate, a champion of the US president who is facing criminal charges in Bucharest. Andrew and his brother Tristan Tate, who are dual US and UK nationals, have become a cause célèbre in rightwing social media after having been arrested in Romania in 2022 and charged with human trafficking, sexual misconduct and money laundering, as well as starting an organised crime group. They have denied wrongdoing. The Tates’ case was first brought up by US officials in a phone call with the Romanian government last week and then followed up by Trump’s special envoy Richard Grenell when he met the Romanian foreign minister at the Munich Security Conference, according to three people familiar with the matter. A fourth person said a request was made to return the brothers’ passports and allow them to travel while they wait for court proceedings to conclude. Romanian foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu declined to comment on his exchange with Grenell. His spokesperson said Hurezeanu initiated the meeting and that they had “known each other for a long time” as they had both served as ambassadors in Berlin during the first Trump presidency.
  16. So, like, welcome russia back into the G8 yeah?
  17. Matt Berger of Space City Weather fame is sounding the alarm on NOAA getting kneecapped https://www.chron.com/gulf-coast/article/national-weather-service-doge-trust-20167595.php Despite Lutnick's assurances, a politicized NOAA could be a real problem, Berger told Chron this week. "Certainly if you wanted to say the planet is no longer warming, one way to do that is just to stop measuring temperatures," he said. "I very much doubt that will happen, but they renamed the Gulf of Mexico, so who knows?" Project 2025 also calls for the National Weather Service to be privatized, contending commercialization of the agency's proprietary technologies will increase competition. But in reality, Berger said, even weather companies in the private sector—including his—rely on NOAA's data to do their jobs. That includes weather apps on the typical smartphone and the dozen or so AI models in various stages of development. "All of them require a coherent set of initial conditions, which is primarily government-collected data," Berger said. "If you take that away, those models are no good—garbage in, garbage out. You've gotta have a good set of initial conditions."
  18. https://www.txftrp.org/politics_above_public_interest_in_montgomery_county Public libraries beginning to be censored and purged of anything they deem to be """DEI"""
  19. Pretty much lol. But 7 does make some big design changes like decoupling leaders from nations, and introducing an "eras" system that breaks the game into 3 segments if you play a full game from start. The maps aren't great, and will probably be a ton better in 3 or 6 or so months with the first big feature update
  20. Inb4 outrage at this comment, completely ignoring that the sitting president has said similar things about his opponents
  21. Stochastic terrorism is a favorite tool of fascists. Read a history book, slorch.
  22. Trans people are specifically targeted and demonized by the trump administration as sick and dangerous and sex offender creeps. You don't see how that could have motivated these very fine people?
