  1. If the gloves fit, you must commit. Or something.
  2. I agree, but I'm looking forward. OU didn't show an edge pass rush. Sooners do look tough to run against.
  3. Defense: Pluses: Run defense is sound. LB look like they've been coached. Bowman looks great--someone his girlfriend can be proud of. Minuses: Pass rush is non-existent. Broiles still played. A lot. DBs are an open question. Offense: Pluses: Able to run vs a poor run defense. Took what they were given. Minuses: UTEP defense isn't a real unit so hard to gauge anything.
  4. Not true. UTEP and UNT were equal in yardage, UTEP couldn't convert 4th downs (2/6). UTEP's offense is good. But UTEPs defense is terrible. OU should score TDs every drive.
  5. I can't remember which coach said it, but one of them said that OU may try EIGHT cornerbacks. We have depth! (or they all suck)
  6. Definitely true, but the loss of a coach to a California school for the reasons Riley outlined hits Oklahoma, the state, with truths that go back decades. Now OU fans see Riley struggling to recruit relative to Venables' success. It's hard to blame Sooner fans for schadenfreude.
  7. There's so much sunshine being pumped this year in Norman that it's the epicenter of global warming. Dillon Gabriel is an asset because of his experience, but he also had a high rate of turnover-worthy throws at UCF. WR group is relying on contributions from several players with few or no catches. RB have two under-performers from 2021 listed at #1 and #2. OL has had a steady trajectory down from 2017-2018 and breaks in 3 new starters. The defense under-performed last year and lost its best players at each level. Not all of these situations are going to go sideways, but there is a path down for OU too. I frankly don't like football that much anymore (takes all day, CTE; basketball, soccer are just more entertaining), but I'm super interested to see how much truth there is to claims being made by Venables and crew.
  8. But why wouldn't recruits just go to a school that's already in the SEC if that were the draw?
  9. That 284 number is the number I'm talking about as being inflated. Don't use it as the recruiting services are giving out more 4 and 5 stars. That said, as indicated above, OU's not had more than 5 top-100 guys in a class from 2013 to now. So far, they have EIGHT with a good shot at Renaud and some chance with a couple of others. I'm also impressed with the lower ranked recruits they're bringing in. Even the guy from Nebraska who's ranked in the 800s has ridiculous testing numbers.
  10. Admit it. You like to watch.
  11. Going back 10 years, OU's never had more than 5 top-100 players in a class (247 composite). In OU got only 2 top-100 players 5 times and only 1 in 2016. I use top-100 as a metric instead of stars because star rankings appear to be inflating over the last 3-4 years. So far, OU has 7 top-100 players committed this year. They're projected to add an 8th tonight (Vickers) and have a shot to add more (Bowen?, Renaud?, Akana?, Hicks?). They've won high profile recruitments that they'd never be a part of in the past (eg, LeBlanc and Carter out of FL) and taken lower ranked players who have gained acclaim over the summer (eg, Adebawore, Spencer). Part of this is Venables connections in the SE and his earned reputation as a defensive coach, and part of it will be OU's expanded recruiting infrastructure. I'm still puzzled as to how they're doing this with limited NIL. My only complaints at this point are CB and RB recruiting, two positions where recruiting rankings translate well. It seems like OU's in on a bunch of high profile safeties (Vickers, Bowen, Yaites and McCarty will be a safety too). Wagoner is their only true CB projection. Apparently Vickers is going to tried at CB first, but Bama wanted him at safety, not CB and he's highly regarded as a safety, not CB. There's no reason OU shouldn't be getting top RB annually. Murray, outside of last year, continues to underwhelm.
  12. Looks like Hooters is projecting a start 5-6.
  13. Last year cousins from California were visiting my parents who still live in small town Oklahoma. The cousins wanted the Oklahoma experience so my parents, who never go to Cracker Barrel, took them to one off I-40. Everyone got Covid. So yeah, diabetes and Covid.
  14. I'm not defending the decision, but the trophy is only a totem to acknowledge the greatness of the 1974 team, which won the more widely recognized national championship and was clearly the dominant team that year. Unfortunately, AP national championship doesn't come with a tangible symbol. Here's the SRS for 1974 (I couldn't find Bill Connelly's 1974 write up). It shows OU's team a massive 5 points ahead of the #2 team (Alabama) and 7 points ahead of the UPI/Coaches poll winner (USC). 2008 Texas was still #3 in SRS and other advanced metrics (reference also below). https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/1974-ratings.html https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/years/2008-ratings.html
  15. The improprieties punished in 1974 were committed under Fairbank$. If I recall, it was transcript shenanigans for a player that had little to no impact in 1971-72. The 1974 team was so far ahead of the nation because most of Texas and the SEC hadn't fully embraced integration.
  16. OU has enough tradition that they don't need to resort to this. But the 1974 OU team was one of the best in college football teams in history. The average score of their games was 43 - 8. Their closest game was a 3 point win over UT, but every other win was 14 points or more. USC, 10-1-1, was named the UPI (Coaches Poll) champion. It was obvious who the best team in the country was that year.
  17. This is a great lesson in outcomes-based decision making. Neyor made the right decision for his career (and possibly personally because I think he's from Texas). The outcome has been, so far, unfortunate. Because the outcome, to date, hasn't been optimal, did he make a bad decision? NO. This is poor logic. Hopefully, your example will serve as a guide to others even if you continue to make this type of mistake.
  18. It was the obvious play /s
  19. or Dusty Dvoracek, either would work
  20. Cat Gundy, wordsmith. Her picture hints that she may be an "entertainer."
  21. Even more reasons to get rid him.
  22. If you include his playing career and one year as a GA, it's 29 years. For those of you disagreeing with me about OU fans being more similar to A&M fans, here's the proof. And @Huckleberry and @WinningIsHard have it right. Cale did a lot positive for OU and now he's got to go. Venables has done the right thing. Soon there will be position battle or an injury to talk about, and Florida State or another team will have their on debacle. If Venables had let Gundy hang on, it would have been a constant distraction. Because he admitted to the error and fell on the sword, Gundy is more likely to get his second chance sooner.
  23. I resemble that remark!
  24. I lived in Houston for 5 years and Dallas for 3 years. I grew up in Oklahoma. I've had plenty of experience with all three groups. Could be generational or specific sample. And come on, how can anyone from OK call any other place "hick and stick."
