  1. Talk about a twisted recruitment. Ealy committed to play for the innovated and charismatic Matt Luke. Luke's career has really taken off as he remains an OL coach.
  2. Kiffin, but yeah, he's made a living taking guys on the edge. His FAU teams were like a JUCO.
  3. @Big Woodrows I know only one "insider," and he's a Clemson booster. When we first discussed Venables coming to OU, his first thought was "He's going to take Chavis with him." Chavis was apparently a guy who the players loved and who did a lot of the day to day DL work (now it'll be legal!). I didn't know who Chavis was and was disappointed when Cain was let go, but the guy from Clemson says Chavis is an awesome all the way around. We'll see.
  4. Is Ealy leaving or is he going to share carries at Ole Miss? @texifornia what is the pitch count reference?
  5. I guess groupthink lead by a guy who reveres me so much he TITLED A THREAD for me has devolved others too. You don't have to believe what master @closetojumping says, you can read for yourself. Or you can tag me with this stuff and let me live rent for in your head too.
  6. I thought the vomit eating was UT's S&C coach, but whatever, I'll assume good will and play along. The 2017 and 2018 OL groups were among the best OU OL since the 1980s. The OU OL in 2019 was expected to regress because of personnel losses and lack of experience. They did regress but OU's run game was still efficient because they had an efficient run threat at QB, Hurts, who hit the holes and made pretty good reads. Did you watch the OL last year trying to pull? The same guys that were relatively efficient at doing it in 2019 were late and whiffing at blocks two years later. Add to that Williams, while incredibly explosive, missed holes and reads. When Schimdt left in 2017, I was glad. While his results were impressive, his manner seemed deeming. I was hopeful that Wiley would achieve similar results with a better demeanor. The OL looked worse every year, the DL would get pushed back 2 yds, and OU's WR weren't breaking away from DBs. We'll learn whether how much credit to give Schimdt for OU's OL perform over the next couple of years because most of the other coaches are the same. It's an interesting experiment.
  7. Kanak and Jayden Rowe profile the same way, 6-2, 210 lb, sub-10.5 100m guys that played DB in high school. Basically Isaiah Simmons starter kits. I look forward to OU trying to get both on the field at the same time to blitz, cover TE/RB, and track down RB sideline-to-sideline. https://247sports.com/player/jayden-rowe-46112803/
  8. Agree with this AND... There was going to be a significant defensive regression for OU in 2022. The Sooners lost their "difference makers" in their front seven, and Grinch was going to try to replace them with freshmen (talented freshmen, but freshmen). Plus, I think you'd have seen significant portal losses on the defense. The OL would've still lost the same players too. Caleb Williams' development would've certainly been huge for the offense, but the OL regression may have limited it's impact. Add to that a defensive regression, I don't know that the ceiling for OU next year would be that high anyway.
  9. 247 looks like they didn't even have a high school page for him. Really productive 83 catch for 15 yds/catch. Played at the same high school as 2 OU 2021 commits. Wonder if OU'll jump in?
  10. These are usually very amusing. LSU's hire of He gave Brian Kelly an A.
  11. SC got Shaun Nua from Michigan. He's probably their best defensive coach and a great fit there. The DL improved in recruiting and production while he was with the Wolverines, and he's American Samoan so may do well recruiting Polynesian players. Good recovery for Riley after losing Cain to LSU. https://247sports.com/college/michigan/Article/Michigan-Wolverines-FOotball-updates-analysis-Shaun-Nua-USC-179879355/
  12. The Sooner biggest portal needs are WR, DL = OL, TE. WR is woefully short on numbers and experience. The DL has numbers, but not quality. OL has ~ 4 starters back and some candidates for the 5th spot (T), but no experienced depth. Because of deficiencies at WR and the O, the passing game could take a huge fall not because of Gabriel but because of all the other requirements to complete a pass. I'd be surprised and disappointed if OU brings in DBs over these other groups. The commenters on the Alamo Bowl broadcast indicated the new OU coaching staff was impress with returning DBs. OU has 3 DBs with starting experience returning and several highly touted possible replacements.
  13. Somehow 247 saw what he did as a freshman and lowered his ranking. He's probably got to decide soon if he's going to play baseball this spring. Too few targets (48) and a high catch rate (35 receptions; neither number includes bowl game). Should've been used in the return game too.
  14. @Atxracer Who does Baylor have coming back next year? OU, Ok St, Iowa St all lose a lot. TCU, Tech have new coaches. Is Baylor going to be favored to win the B12 next year?
  15. Just like you guys have a Ian Boyd prohibition, would you consider a Drumm prohibition? Linking Caleb Williams with Casey Thompson is...why?
  16. Check your data if you consider OU's WR development to be anything other than awful (except Lamb) for the past 4-5 seasons. The Sooners have had at least 2 WR transfer to other programs and flourish also. Gundy was an excellent RB coach. Let's see if he can develop players now that Simmons is gone.
  17. Jalil Farooq is the next WR that'll likely portal. He's from the DMV and friends with Caleb Williams. That'll leave OU with Mims, Wease, Drake Stoops, and a bunch of guys that really haven't played. Only 9 total WR on the team.
  18. Gundy's apparently a really good recruiter but as a WR coach, not so much. I was hoping he would get bumped up to a General Manager or recruiting coordinator role while still assisting Murray with the RB. Cale coached RB for a long time and had a lot of success doing it.
  19. If this were true, HBCU's would have landed their first 5* player long before 2021. This was in the context of comparing SC and Oregon, which have relative similar resources. I assume you recognize the resource disadvantage HBCU's have vs P5 schools. You may know the history FSU players and Florida A&M (also in Tallahassee) women.
  20. If OU'd had a choice they'd not have had the upheaval of the last 5 weeks. But Riley left. We don't know Venables capacity, but we do know that Riley hadn't fielded even a top 30 defense*. As fans of a rival that has had high profile hires fail, I see your predisposition for assuming the worst, but variance has two tails. * don't tell me 2020--there are too many caveats
  21. Rhule I've seen mentioned. Aranda was just rumors. Do you know more? (doesn't really matter now)
  22. I personally find Gundy to be a despicable human, but seeing what Gundy does with development and discipline up close as an OU fan, he is remarkable. It's a make do with less story that approaches Bill Snyder's work at KSt (Snyder definitely started lower and climbed higher). Gundy is top 5 and maybe top 3 if you look at how much he gets out of his players. There was a legit chance about 10 years ago that he would have left for Tennessee. I bet he'd have done well there. What happens if the Vols under Gundy picked off Saban's Tide teams a couple of times? Sliding doors.
  23. Gundy is really underrated. First off, he gets kids to go to northern OK. Have you ever been there? His teams are at least competent every year. He's been head coach since 2005 and has a winning record every year except 2005. And frequently, they're really good! Ok St ended the season ranked 9 times in his 17 years. To put that in perspective, Ok St has only been ranked 8 other times since the AP poll has been around. I like Aranda and Campbell. Hopefully, OU called both of them. We'll learn a lot about Campbell and Aranda this year.
