  1. I think our opinions align. I think Jimbo is teaching us that he wants a game manager by taking Johnson, and that's probably ok. A&M will win with defense and running the ball, mimicking Georgia this year (A&M RB aren't as good). For the rest of college football, it's probably good that he's not more creative.
  2. Hopefully, this is the shot across the bow that awakens potential OU donors to the need for NIL. Wherever Mims goes (or if he stays), they'll get a true #1 WR with good speed, great competitiveness (his ability to high point the ball for contested catches is well known on this forum), and a great lockerroom guy. He got some NIL this year and apparently donated it. As an aside, Riley's a good/great OC, but WTF. .Mims averaged 17 yds A TARGET and he only got 41 targets pre-bowl game with seven coming vs Tulane (first game). 3 targets/game --- SMH
  3. Ward may have a higher ceiling, but Max Johnson is a good fit for Jimbo's offense with less variance.
  4. I'm poors
  5. More information, less name calling. Most of this board knows, all the big programs funnel some money to programs. There are levels to this though. UT, Michigan, ND, and OU --- ALL have been paying some players (? all) something. But big money, like Clemson, Ohio St, SEC, Oregon isn't happening at OU --> trust me, Surly would've jumped on it faster than anywhere else. So when you can back your certainty up with names and stories, come back. Otherwise, your just out over your skis.
  6. I mostly agree on your impression of the OU transfers last year. Some more context that supports your point. Bradford --> went back LSU (didn't play there either LOL) Morris: sat out most of spring and some of fall camp. Still has promise. S&C for the OL will be key for 2022. Gray: Very productive at Tennessee. A strong wind was enough to get him to the ground at OU. Can catch, but can't play on 3rd down because his blitz pick is terrible. Cogel: Had to play early because OU's unvaxed presumptive starter was in protocols or something and then late because of standard injury. May have cost OU the OkSt game with the cumulative effects of poor snapping/blocking. OU had no else able to play center??? Bowens: Got beat out for 3rd string QB by a freshman walkon from some small town in Tx. Still on scholarship somehow. Turk: One of the best punters in the nation. Anti-vax asshole. Lawrence: Best OU DB in the second half of the year. Would love to see what he can do at nickel. Woods: Grossly underused. Coming back. Could be key to next season.
  7. So the authoritarian vibe Kelly exudes may have some real effect. I don't remember those offenses being very explosive, but they were pretty efficient. Good to learn Kelly's populating his staff with yes-men (Denbrock) and low performers (Cooks). Cain seems like the one good hire. Hopefully, the new DC from the NFL will try to install overly complex schemes. Do you have any insight into the S&C guy he brought down? As an OU fan, I think I'm going to be watching a lot of SC. Are you going to be watching more LSU?
  8. Bijan's gone after next year, and OU's got LB depth coming back so I doubt there's ever an opportunity.
  9. I love ad hominem attacks. They're the sign of someone really grounded in reality. Please educate me. In the last 10 years, name me ONE recruit OU got that was well known to be on the street agent market? OU's LOST several players to SEC/Oregon/Ohio St late in their recruitment. Because you're so certain, I'm sure the list will be long and the stories detailed. If OU's so good at the bag-game, why do they keep losing players? Why did their former coach (Riley) complain about compliance? Your friends can help you with the list too.
  10. Nuance escapes you dude.
  11. I agree with your history. So was LBJ always a racist, or did he change later in life? I pointed out the irony of McKenzie's and OU's position in general myself. In addition, I was stating that their insistence on an amateur model now, if real, may be the downfall of the program. Unlike @Scholz, you don't seem to just be razzing for fun so your absolutist tendencies make discussion unfulfilling.
  12. Well, now that's the problem isn't it. There were dirty, got clean, and now need to get dirty again. You would know this if you were paying attention, which I assume your are and that is just a shtick. If not. bless your heart and all that.
  13. What are thoughts on this guy @notre dame joe? He's been with Kelly a long time. Two good offenses at ND in four years as OC at ND per FEI, 2015 and 2017. After a good offensive year, he takes a lateral move to Cincy??? Meh offenses at Cincy over the last four years.
  14. Good question! OU still hasn't hired CB or DL coach. I think Cain is good. Hopefully, he'll have moved on before OU-UT join the SEC.
  15. Yes sir. That's why I remarked upon it.
  16. Is there intel that is saying this? He fits the "plugger" role Venables has preferred in the past (when he doesn't have guys with exceptional athleticism), he's in Oklahoma, and OU definitely has need.
  17. https://247sports.com/player/lebbeus-overton-46103456/ This guy is a 2023 top 10 national DL who has OU in his top group. Similar to Dindy this cycle, the primary reason he's looking at OU is because he's a legacy. As you both likely know, the only way OU's getting a look at guys at this level right now is if there's something unique in their recruitment.
  18. Venables success at Clemson was based on sound scheme and exceptional DT talent: Bryan Bresee, Dexter Lawrence, Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins: 6'4, 310 with power, and quickness. The OU defense has good talent in spots, but not to the level of Clemson anywhere (? DB possibily, paradoxically). Based on this, I'm thinking of a scheme based on the following assumptions. - OU won't get 5-star DT for at least a couple of years (if ever). Everybody wants the same unicorns. - That he'll do what he did while he was at OU last time, when he had a similar or worse DL. This is assumption could be wrong for several reasons (he's changed, offenses change, rosters change). On the inside: Pairing a 6'0, 320 dude who's tough to move (think Casey Walker, from about 10 yrs ago) with basically Jalen Redmond (6'3, 280), quicker DT with pass rush ability. Redmond looks fat and may have lost quickness during his time at OU. S&C may really help him. On the outside: OU has some interesting dudes who may, with more disciple and better scheme, be really good, flexible players: Grimes, Downs, Stripling, Gilliam, Arinze could all factor into a SDE/WDE role productively. The Edge players OU's recruited over the last several years don't have a direct anolog to Venables' old schemes that I recall, but OU has some talent here too (Clayton Smith, who wasn't great in the bowl game, his first real action)
  19. The concern with Venables is just the opposite, that he won't use the portal enough. This is based on the assumption that he'll try to apply the Clemson model at OU. So far, OU's taken two players, a TE and a G. Those are positions of huge need. They may take even one more at each position because numbers are so low in the TE and OL rooms. The other position the Sooner staff should be targeting is DL/DE, based on loss of personnel and the poor performance of those groups in the Alamo Bowl. They'd made some public offers for DL. If Williams leaves, several WR will also likely leave. In that case, OU'll look for QB and WR obviously. Other than that, OU's probably only going to be looking for elite players who want to leave their current situations, which is rare. Taking guys who are marginally better than guys who are currently on your roster will create an unhappy locker room.
  20. So far, OU fans who are loud on the internet have been decrying the loss of the amateur ideal. My assumption is that Turnipseed was brought to OU to organized the Sooners bag game/NIL, but that this hadn't been going well. Interestingly, the Caleb Williams saga appears to opening the eyes of OU boosters to the new reality. Now the claim is that Oklahoma is just poorer than UT, Michigan, Georgia, USC, etc. But OU and Oklahoma the state aren't poorer than Mississippi and Alabama. OU will either start catching up to UT, etc, in paying players NIL (making McKinzie's point moot), or slide into mediocrity.
  21. With the performance of OU's DL in the Alamo Bowl, Player should be at the top of the Sooners recruiting board.
  22. I think that the poor performance of transition classes in prior cycles has made coaches wary of taking too many high schoolers. Plus the portal provides another option. Relative to their usual expectation, LSU's obviously down this year. But they're doing okay relative to other schools with new coaches. Signed "Committed" Transfer Conference rank Oregon 7 3 1 7 USC 7 0 2 9 Washington 5 1 2 12 (last) LSU 13 0 1 8 Florida 9 1 2 14 (last) Miami 9 0 1 8 Oklahoma 12 2 2 2
  23. In big organizations, titles can be tied to benefits. Having "coordinator" in his title, may qualify Cain for a pay level in the LSU system that "coach" wouldn't.
  24. USC's lost two coaches already. Choice to UT and Cain now to LSU. Cain didn't want to leave OU but was replaced by Venables. Cain was probably the most productive coach on the OU defense (recruiting and on the field product).
  25. Robinson and Hayes were presumed to be gone. I had taken all these players off my spreadsheet except Turner-Yell, who hadn't said anything. Hayes and Robinson have been out of shape since 2019 and disappointing. Both had promise, but I doubt either will be drafted unless they lose 30 lb over the next 6 months. OU's OL next yr will have three returning starters + the guard from Cal who's started for 2 yrs there: C Raym, T Harrison, G Murray, G Mettauer (Cal transfer). There are several highly recruited but untested options for the other tackle spot. Depth will also have to come from unproven players. One sneaky thing OU's benefited from now going on 5-6 years is relative good health on the OL. Part of this is luck, but I don't know if that's something with training or teaching that Bedenbaugh does.
