  1. Venables has said he won't pursue or contact any players he recruited for Clemson, and I think he's explicitly stated he's not contacted Kanak or the 3-4 other defensive players who decommited. Venables grew up in KS and played LB, just like Kanak. I think it's different if Kanak reaches out to Venables at OU and tells that he's not going to sign with Clemson. Also, OU recruited Kanak prior to the staff changes. It's certainly different from what Riley's done, which is an "all's fair in love and recruiting" approach. Stoops has said that keeping Mixon was bad for OU and Mixon too, and that it was the worst decision he made at OU. The worst thing about Lebby's time at Baylor was the Lebby was one of the coaches who remained on the staff who actively defended Briles after the cover ups were revealed. Whether Lebby actively participated in the coverups is sort of immaterial at that point because it indicates he's tone deaf at least and possibly much worse. It will be interesting to see how Venables reconciles this with his overall message of family, faith, etc.
  2. He smartly is waiting to see who OU gets at CB coach. OU could mess this up, but Arkansas, not the heaviest of hitters, seems to be #2 right now. I think they'll keep him if the rumors are true and OU gets Clinkscale from Michigan (who's really good).
  3. OU needed a big class this year and was set to sign one because of a large graduating class + early NFL entries + portalling. So the quality of the class has remained high, but numbers will be very short. So far, including 2022 signees, OU only has 69 scholarship players by my count (offense 33, defense 36). They lead for at least 3 more defensive players to the class (1 each-DB, LB, DT) and 1 offensive player (RB) for the 2022 class right now. All 4 are well regard (3 4-stars, 1 3-star). But the Sooners will be VERY short in some key areas, or they'll reach, or they'll be heavy in the portal. OU has only 13 total WR/TE, including 4 class of 2022 freshmen from whom you expect nothing, and 3 RB (1 2022). They'll have to go to the portal for at least one WR and a RB. OU has only 14 OL total including only 7 interior players so I image more high school or portal takes.
  4. All of this is true. Was very positive about OU after he left also.
  5. Might have just asked who has the fanciest bags.
  6. I know. I had to look it up before I believed it. He's apparently a very impressive person (from a Clemson booster). He wants to be AD, so don't be surprised if he's the OU athletic director in 3-4 years.
  7. i didn't speculate about Thompson's rationale for leaving UT.
  8. I mentioned on another thread that Caleb Williams staying remains in question. That Thompson considered coming back to OU has been known. And remember, Thompson would have been transferring BEFORE he got a chance to play and to an OU QB room that had Rattler and Williams. I read that as Thompson wasn't afraid of competition or was comfortable as a backup. Thompson's relative success at UT probably has him thinking that he could go some place and start. Wisconsin has been mentioned elsewhere, and the Badgers would be an excellent idea on paper. With better QB play, Wisconsin would have won their lousy division and have given Michigan a better game in the regular and post-season. I'd welcome Thompson back to OU as long as he's comfortable knowing that he's there to push Williams but won't likely supplant him.
  9. Many Sooner fans resent the NIL. Until it's obvious that OU needs to pony up, there may be a lag in OU getting it's shit together. The one hope for OU is that Thad Turnipseed, director of operations at Clemson and one of the few people that Venables brought with him from Clemson, probably understands this and could alert OU booster that they need to get stuff together.
  10. Are they saying this like it's a good thing?
  11. I was very pleasantly surprised (is this where you say "gruntled") by the OU-UT battle for Campbell as I thought he was a UT lock. Is he playing this for drama or is there a real chance UT could blow this? @golfclap @texifornia @Barbacoa
  12. I didn't realize that his injury was so severe. If it that bad, I completely agree with you. Good to be in college where your GF is and just hang.
  13. I've seen this logic elsewhere and obviously hope it's correct, but, as others have alluded to, there are several assumptions that have been made. A few thoughts on Williams' situation based on logic, a podcast Williams was on that dropped yesterday, and OU's 9.95ers: - He would never transfer to USC. Per the other players on the podcast, Williams may have legit won the QB job in Spring and Fall camp. Riley stuckwith Rattler. Williams spoke very coolly about Riley abandoning the team and how he did it. USC is a complete mess, especially the OL. The OL coach still hasn't been hired. Just based on how the offense will look next year, why would any QB want that punishment? - Williams is the unquestioned leader on the team. If he goes somewhere else, he's going to have to recreate that dynamic. - Where would Williams go right now that is an obviously better situation than OU? Ohio St and Bama have QBs coming back next year. A&M runs an outdated offense and will have Max Johnson (Williams >> Johnson). Georgia is a QB killing ground. Clemson was awful on offense this year and will have new coordinator who has never called plays next year. Michigan will have McNamera and McCarthy coming back. Where am I missing?
  14. Neither coordinator has been hired. One would think people would be flocking to work for Brian Kelly 🤪
  15. Never saw meaningful snaps at OU despite having good measurables and supposedly leadership qualities. The Sooners tried to get him to gain weight and play LB and nothing every took. Could've been a Keenan Clayton starter kit for Venables, but probably gone now. Seems like the type of guy who'll go to Utah, become all-P12, and play 7 years in the league.
  16. OU was playing at tempo therefore saw more plays and drives than most teams. In addition, the Big12 had great and diverse offenses that era. There were years when 4-5 of the top ten offenses in the country were in the Big12. That's why I look at advanced stats. They can account for variance in tempo and level of competition (with limits on the latter). Most people who are serious about this stuff use these metrics because they're far, far more informative. I left the references for you. Your ideas were shared by the portion of the OU fanbase that was frustrated with Venables in 2010 and 2011. Those fans were wrong because they're looking at the wrong data, just like you are now. The last decade is further evidence of this. Venables had the same basic philosophies and schemes at Clemson as he did at OU. His talent, especially the DL, got better. There are many ways Venables could fail as a head coach at OU. It won't be because he can't organize a defense.
  17. 🤪🤪 I haven't forgotten anything. Venables didn't get run out, and his defenses were good to excellent during his tenure as the sole DC. That's what you forgot. This is covered on the recruiting board in detail so you can look up there and go to footballoutsiders.com and review the primary data regarding defensive efficiency.
  18. Only two OL recruits from those two classes, Darrell Simpson and Marcus Alexander, are still at OU. Neither has made the two deep at any point. From the standpoint of quickness, flexibility, and explosiveness, I think OU looked okay. Overall cardiovascular conditioning was an issue. The Sooner defense had to substitute so much to keep guys fresh, even in big games. I agree with rotating DL players in sequentially for ~ 1-2 series in the first half and a series in the second. But OU had whole line changes throughout the game. The Sooner OL looked fat and gassed in the first half. Others have commented on the overall strength of the team being worse. I'm not sure about that. Specifically for the OL, I'm not doubt that Riley's GT pulling scheme is going to be the focus at OU moving forward. That may be good because I really like the simplicity of Lebby's run scheme, and it works. Riley's scheme is apparently hard to teach and learn so I wonder if he even uses it at USC.
  19. Ted Roof bidding war.
  20. I hope Roof is a competent game planner. You know what you do with that guy, make him an analyst. That was his job at Clemson. OU should've doubled his salary and made him an analyst again.
  21. My dude, I know he sucks as a recruiter. I was being sarcastic. Roof checks none of the boxes I was hoping for -- innovation, relateability, recruiting--ZERO. I mean, he didn't cover up a rape conspiracy ring, so he's got that going for him. It's a terrible hire unless Roof's figured out a way to legally get 13 men on the field.
  22. tell me you're an old White dude without telling me you're an old White dude
