  1. Should've had a plan on the plane coming down.
  2. I would've kept Cain. Bonitto's great, Grimes is developing, and he's got Clayton Smith coming next year too.
  3. Yeah, this is a bit shaky. The OU Rivals guys said 3 coaches were going to be staying. I was hoping for Cain, Thibodeaux, and Bedenbaugh. I bet we get stuck with Gundy as a WR coach, Finley, and Murray. Bedenbaugh finally says screw it and moves to LA. My overall thoughts on the staff: Defensive staff: Grinch, safeties/DC: safeties were the weakest unit - no loss Manning, CB: reasonable recruiter, minimal development, baffling positional decisions - no loss Odom, inside LB: played at OU, good reputation prior to OU, OU's LBs looked lost in zone coverage - no loss Cain, outside LB: recruited well, developed players, players seemed to like him - this is the guy I wanted to keep Thibodeaux, DL: former OU player under Venables, recruiting had picked up over the last couple of years and so had development - there could be a case for him staying. Offensive staff: Riley, QB/OC: don't recall that he made much of an impact - no loss Murry, RB: recruiting was terrible until 2022, but he may bring in OU's only top 100 recruits this year; awful player development - apparently staying but I cannot understand why beyond this year's recruiting. Gundy, inside WR: played at OU, preceded Venables/Stoops on the OU staff I think; great RB coach, minimal impact as a WR coach, buddies with Venables -- apparently staying (OK as RB coach; NO as a WR coach) Simmons, outside WR: recruited in odd numbered years only; minimal player development - no loss Finley, TE/HB: played at OU, recruited ok, develped good pass catchers, but run/pass blocking hasn't been great -- apparently staying; meh. Bedenbaugh, OL: I've been down on him recently because OL play has worsened over the last 3 years - apparently staying.
  4. It's odd that all the defensive coaches are gone, but some of the offensive coaches have been retained. Hopefully, the new OC will be allowed to pick which of the guys he wants to keep.
  5. Perfect example is Murray's RB coach when he was at OU, Cale Gundy. Murray is apparently recruiting his ass off, but the production of his unit doesn't merit keeping him. If Venables fired Cain and Thibbs, Murray should be gone too. Gundy can hang around to see if the new OC keeps him at RB coach, where he excelled. Gundy as a WR coach doesn't deserve to stay. Gundy and Venables are buddies.
  6. Venables then fired his DL coach.
  7. @closetohumping @closetohumping May want to check that math Cochise Correct. 10.25 isn’t exactly 10 and he left off a few years. Maybe he’s right and it’s over 8 years but please bring the data if you’re gonna make claims. Also a difference between a top 10 average and being in the top ten for 8 straight years venables could very well be the next stoops but stoops was an hc before 40 and Brent is pushing 50, he’s not some wunderkid. I felt hopeless when Riley was their hc. That feeling is gone…..for now. @cochamps 17th in 2008 is not exactly top ten, Einstein. Nor is 13th in 2010. And you conveniently omitted 2004-06. So how exactlty was he top ten every year after Mikey left, according to your own stats? A little exaggeration perhaps? @ztejas I'm getting 10.25 on average. What he isn't factoring in is that no one gives a shit how good OU's defenses were during a period where they routinely took it up the ass from Texas and did nothing nationally relevant but trip over their own dicks and embarass themselves (oh wait - come to think of it that's all they've done since then, too). I mean - if Venables is trying to bring that golden-era back then I say let's let him do it. We could go for another title and maybe we won't fuck it up this time and actually win 2 or 3 like we were supposed to. All three of you are correct! I was wrong when I said OU defenses with Venables as the sole DC from 2004-2011 were top ten every year. I would've done more research prior to making such a statement (@cochamps -- saying you're wrong isn't hard!) While 17, 13, and 10.25 are all greater than 10, OU's defenses were still consistently good during that period and that was the point I was addressing. I didn't pulled the data for you prior to 2007 for a couple of reasons: - F+ data is only available from 2007 on (FEI started in 2007, S&P+ 2005 that I can now find) - your fellow UT supporter had acknowledged OU's defense was good 2004-06 OU's defense was 9 in 2005, 12 in 2006. I can't find the 2004 data but they only gave up 14 points a game that year prior to the national championship debacle. So they were good then too. Now the other stuff. ztejas: This discussion of OU's coaches focuses on Venables. That's why the discussion is about the defense during that period. OU lost 2004 NC to USC because USC was better on both sides of the ball. They lost in 2008 to UF because of the offense. UF only got 24 pts. During the 8 yrs in question, UT had arguably their 2 best QBs ever, and still only averaged 24 points vs OU. Not bad for a points-happy period in the B12. You provide insight in many areas. I've known people that share some of your non-sports related interests and have compassion for them and you. This isn't necessary. closetohumping: Thanks for calling me Cochise. I view advanced stats as providing context to the game I watch. OU's defenses (and UT's) were going against the best, most diverse offenses in country during that period working with great QBs and tempo. They gave up a ton of yards and sometimes many points. Advanced stats tell us OU's defense was good during that period despite what the counting stats show. I share your wait and see approach to the Venables hire and said as much on this board. cochamps: Your ability to make grossly wrong statements yet also split hairs displays a lack of self awareness and concrete thinking that makes discussions with you unrewarding. I will put you on ignore. If you do the same, I'd appreciate it. @JesusSweatDuck Finally, jesus. To be clear, your fellow UT fan @cochamps made erroneous statements and then an ad hominem attack. So you called me out. I repped you to give you more power to enforce your brilliant idea of protecting mistakes and bad behavior.
  8. Honestly, we'll now actually may get to see if was Murray or Riley's fault that OU's backs basically had ONE route they'd run out of the backfield over the last couple of years (go out to the flat and stand). It's not like they didn't have backs who could catch. Eric Gray caught 30 passes over just 9 games in 2020 at Tennessee. Why he never ran at Texas route on 3rd down (NOT ONCE) is baffling.
  9. Good question. The fact that TJ Pledger transferred to Utah and went for 6 yds a carry doesn't help either. I guess being an all-American alum at the school you're coaching at helps get you a second chance. It seems he's like he's taking advantage of it. Now Murray needs to actually coach the blocking/route running part of what made him so useful as a player.
  10. You combined an ad hominem attack and deflection in the same insult! Keep going.
  11. Let me show you the math. The most widely recognized adjusted states from the time, FEI and SP+. Year Defensive F+ rank (FEI and SP+ averaged) 2008 17 (2nd best in B12) 2009 2 2010 13 (best in B12) 2011 9 (2nd best in B12) Average 10 From footballoutsiders.
  12. It was hyperbole in response to a UT fan saying a fired NFL OC should come be your WR coach.
  13. Venables defenses at OU were top 10 for eight straight years after Mike left. This is despite him him a couple of zeros on the the defensive staff. I did the homework on earlier today. In those eight years Venables was at OU as the sole DC OU finished 3, 8, 5, and 6 including a national championship game. To stay they weren't a real factor isn't reality. You're opinion is uninformed, just like your prior statement.
  14. Haselwood was injured a lot, and almost portaled last year after the season. He doesn't have the speed of Burks, but is very physical. Two recent OU WR were underwhelming in Norman and did really well for Miami and UCF. Based on this, taking OU WR may be a good investment. There are two OU WR who have obvious upside: Mims and Mario Williams. The rest are question marks. Hopefully, OU hires a OC/WR coach that can keep those two and Wease.
  15. Peter Principle defined.
  16. Mike had accepted the Arizona job but still coached in the KSt game so your point is moot. BTW, Mike's DBs were trash that game. Regardless, it would be silly to focus on that one game sample vs the other EIGHT YEARS and 107 other games.
  17. DeMarco's been a pretty terrible RB coach at OU so far, but his efforts maintaining this class have to be acknowledged. Now if he would only remind his RBs to pass block, that would be great.
  18. Also, I agree with you about having Venables as head coach not guaranteeing good defenses at OU. That said, he had free rein regarding the defense at Clemson and did more with less when at OU. Amongst the predictors of good performance, he's got them.
  19. Thanks. How bout the fact that OU's defense experienced no regression with Mike's departure plus the fact that Mike looked like an incompetent ass at Arizona?
  20. Read it again. I was comparing Venables time as sole DC at OU (2004 - 2011) to Mike Stoops time as head coach at Arizona (2004-2011). The Big12 during that time was far stronger than the Pac10 (pre-Utah and Colorado). The Pac10 had USC and Oregon and then a wasteland. The Big12 was right up with the SEC during that time.
  21. Campbell would be a good get too.
  22. Not while he was at OU. There's always been this buzz about him having some skeletons in the closet, but I don't know specifics.
  23. @Constant probably knows more but likely conflicting priorities: Knows Riley since both were at Tech, been successful with him. Wife is from OK, he preceded Riley at OU and apparently likes Norman. If he leaves, I'd love OU to go after Sherrone Moore, Michigan's OL coach. He's only got one year coaching OL there, but he played OL at OU and is apparently a good recruiter. Michigan's OL did well vs Wisconsin and Iowa, two good DLs, and crushed Ohio St.
  24. Donte's coming to Norman as DC (please please please please please please please)
