I put up an OU game week thread (it was pure genius) and El Jefe said patience grasshopper, patience. Do a Texas vs bye week thread instead. I’m on a cruise starting Saturday, so he copied my Texas v OU gameweek post and he will be posting it for me on Sunday next week, worry not.
So, Texas v Bye is a good time to take note of what’s going on and talk about big picture stuff and what our goals should be during this bye week.
Big picture:
The Good:
This Texas squad is a rolling ball of butcher knives right now. We are one of 3 or four teams not to trail in a game yet this year. We have spent roughly 10 minutes of time in the second half not up double digits. We are averaging something like 45 points a game. We have given up 3 TD’s all year- 1 on a busted play 67 yard run and 2 garbage time TD’s while up 3 or 4 TD’s.
We have a starting QB that’s looks like the best QB in college football and his back up has played almost as well and looks like the Heisman front runner for 2025, after QB1 goes to NY for this years Heisman ceremony and likely goes top 5 in the draft.
This team lost 11 players to the draft and looks like we will have more players drafted than that this year.
We have a head coach that is clearly the right man for the right time in Texas football that’s going to have us going a massive run the next decade.
On defense, we lost a damn good LB coach to a head job at a lower level program and improved with his replacement- we got a guy that’s helped bring the defense together and brought new concepts and cohesion to the unit. Our special teams are pretty good. We have tons of young players who are showing out, getting better and showing that the future is bright. Recruiting is good, retention is awesome and the portal is an absolute weapon for us.
This bye week is important. We need to get QB1 fully healthy- he’s a weapon and big game tested. We need to heal up some dings in the RB room. We need to make sure we are ready for a dual threat QB in OU and make sure we have some stuff ready to clown a pretty good but not great defense of theirs. We need to be ready for a very good Georgia team the next week that’s not as good as they have been, and, quite frankly, not as good as us.
Most of all, we need to continue to work on us and play to a standard. This is, pretty clearly in my mind, the best team in the land. This is the best Texas team since 05 and if they continue to get better and play to a standard they will have the chance to go down as a special team in college football. Maybe not 94/95 Nebraska, 01 Miami, 05 Texas or 19 LSU, but better than the typical run of the mill national championship type team. It’s all on the table for us.
Let’s use the bye as a tool to heal up, sharpen our blades, play to a standard and be all that we can be. It’s a good time in Austin when the football is good. Hook ‘Em and enjoy the good times.
