  1. This is a very helpful long post from someone who appears to be very non-partisan and appears to have some climate science credentials:
  2. That sounds like what they did at the Getty Villa and it seems to have worked. The one planning criticism I have seen that seems to have some merit is the question of whether regular controlled burns were being prevented by environmental regulations might have helped here. There is some truth in here in that a lot of rich, influential people are going to get pissed off and seek change, but Carolla got community-noted because the Pallisades actually majority-voted for Caruso and Malibu residents don’t vote in the LA mayoral election. As others have noted, the problem is just that there are some areas of the country that are prone to periodic catastrophic natural events, and if you build houses there, it is just a matter of time before they become at risk. See all the $10 million houses getting built on barrier islands on the east coast when hurricanes come along. SoCal has ecosystems that evolved in the context of regularly occurring burn cycles over millions of years. If you build a home in a canyon that doesn’t get a lot of rainfall and there are regular seasonal high winds, fires are going to happen periodically.
  3. Moonshadows is gone, burnt down to the foundation. The Reel Inn is gone. Duke’s seems to be ok. Haven’t heard anything about Nobu.
  4. The future, Mr. Gandorf, the future! Good luck to you
  5. Looking like the fires jumped the PCH in Malibu and have burned down a bunch of the beach houses on the ocean side of the road. Reporter at Rambla Vista and it’s all gone.
  6. A long and proud tradition in SoCal:
  7. Good Lord, it looks like a city in Ukraine that’s been taking artillery fire from the Russians:
  8. Damn. I really liked the Marmalade Cafe that’s right next door.
  9. The Marcus Licinius Crassus FD is at your service . . . for the right price.
  10. Exactly. I don’t know if she is just that dense, or ESPN required her and Finebaum to take different sides of the issue and she drew the short straw. On Franklin, the question was just about the Cotton Bowl matchup, not the whole final four, but I’d agree about him.
  11. Watching the press conference of LA City and County officials right now and the Sheriff just warned against looting
  12. The lululemon store in the Malibu Village Mall better batten down the hatches
  13. I have often thought of our offense like a finely tuned Ferrari, runs like a dream when it’s well-maintained but frequently breaks down and is in the shop. Speaking of Finebaum, the ESPN morning show was on one of the TV’s while I was at the gym this morning and Mike Greenberg asked Finebaum and Heather Dinich which coach had the most pressure on them this game. Dinich said it was “100% on Sark” because the SEC has been bad in the playoffs and Texas is carrying the banner of the conference. To his credit, Finebaum respectfully disagreed with that ridiculous assessment.
  14. Damn, this is all so devastating. We took a family vacation in March of 2023 and stayed at a beautiful AirBnB house in Las Flores Canyon, just up the mountain from Duke’s on the PCH. It’s probably gone now. Ate at the Reel Inn mentioned above. Hope the Getty Villa survives. @Sbbruin @Foosters @henrygandorf and anyone else in that area, good luck to you all and stay safe!
  15. Love this movie. I am slightly younger than this time frame, but it very much captured the frat house vibe of a bunch of young guys living in the same house back then.
  16. I’m watching KCAL and they just had the LAFD spokesperson on who asked all off duty firefighters to come in to assist. They said it hasn’t rained in downtown LA since May, which is crazy.
  17. Maybe they weren’t interviewed at that time, but yeah, they needed that chip in the rematch against UGA after their first performance.
  18. I don’t think he’s acting here, but this is very well delivered. I’m sure some on this thread may not feel as warm and fuzzy about Jerry’s familial employment decisions, however.
  19. The Reverse Mudhole post. Is this a first?
  20. Can I interest you in the geographical growing area of Saguaro cacti?
