  1. Business kept me out of the info loop, and Phil’s passing is quite a shock. I remember a conversation, back in ‘85, with the grandparent of a deadhead, who was all in on Phil’s classical background. Connecting with that generation about the Dead was affirming in a novel way, and helped me understand the acceptance shown the Dead by NPR types is the years after. Godspeed, Mr Lesh. I am so grateful.
  2. Wonder if this guy wants to deport those of gramdma’s progeny who served in our military? The odds of both these suppositions being true are greater than even.
  3. When I was in my teens, my parents sat me down to tell me why they voted Republican. They said Texas had been run by Democrats for so long, the state apparatus was bent and they were voting to correct that injustice. I could respect that, though my personal political beliefs were fairly far afield from theirs. Patrick finally burst my mom’s bubble, and she started voting democrat. Still, I wonder when Texas voters will realize it is time for a change. Is this the election where enough Texans are fed up with political entrenchment?
  4. Today I voted with my wife and our youngest, which was her first time voting. Sure, I was up most of the night working, but a couple of hours sleep and a Bloody Mary put me right in the zone. Some bootlicker was holding a sign for Hipolito (R), outside the council chambers where early voting took place, and I was happy to tell him I vote for Americans, not traitors. For some inexplicable reason, this pissed my wife off. Edited to report the whole process took maybe ten minutes.
  5. Figured this might slide under this thread’s wire; certainly deserves the courtesy of the satirical adjective, for a cynical historian. Woody Guthrie riffs on his landlord, Fred Trump. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh1QXhqXDbU
  6. Truth.be told, I wouldn’t use that word, at all, except in the situation I described, and only with my wife. I had no idea my daughter was in earshot. I’d like to think if my friend heard that tale, she’d laugh. The chance my story would offend her means I won’t share it with her. My big takeaway from the encounter was the memory it brought back, of my father trying to make the case that the n-word was less race specific than it was a condemnation of low account people. There are trashy people of every race, he said, all of whom deserved the slur. And I was horrified to hear that from him. And greatly embarrassed. My thought was I had similarly horrified, and embarrassed, my daughter. There may be some solace in the notion that racial, and civil, justice rachets forward generation by generation, but I feel shame to have embarrassed my daughter.
  7. I have a friend who describes herself the same way. While relating a story this friend told me, my wife asked about the friend. I said, “You remember the woman who described herself as a dyke?” Well, our oldest heard this comment, and came in, full of pique.”YOU CAN’T SAY THAT!” I defended my words as coming from my friend’s self description. “SHE CAN SAY THAT, YOU CANNOT!” Years went by, and the event came up in a conversation between daughter and I. She said she had been overly dramatic, but I was glad to know that the use of that term, by a cis male, offended some people, and I have avoided it since. I never told my friend about the exchange, nor asked if my words would have offended her. But, I’ll ask you, SS, would you have been offended by my parroting your own words?
  8. I did misunderstand. And, when I realized that, I deleted my post.
  9. Okay. But the next time I see the argument that Harris will destroy democracy backed up with evidence will be the first time. The same charge levied at turnip has been supported by the content of Project 2025, turnip saying he will act as a dictator, and there will no be no need to vote in the future, etc. Folks in the magasphere have willingly divorced themselves from reality. Over the long term, reality will crush the merry-go-round you mention.
  10. Reality is supposed to be fact based. Don’t dignify the magat worldview as being reality.
  11. I’m not a puppet, you’re the puppet.
  12. A college friend dropped the n bomb in my presence earlier this year. I’ve known him since 1983, and it was the first time I had ever heard him use that word. We don’t talk much anymore, but he ain’t voting turnip.
  13. Sarcasm didn’t convey. Mea culpa.
  14. I think it would be a nice gesture for her to take a cognitive exam. With a doctor looking for a bit of fame. Perhaps said doctor would extoll her mastery of the exam, which happens to be a much more difficult one than the one Donald “barely passed.” The doctor’s words would provoke an entertaining meltdown; and isn’t that the job of a president, to provide entertaining content for our mews programs?
  15. Ah. Much appreciated. Will go fire up the caffeine machine.
  16. Excellence in political cartooning.
  17. Since when does Texas A&M University come after the University of Texas at Austin alphabetically? It’s early, and I haven’t had my double espresso, so maybe I’m missing something.
  18. It’s a fucking land grab.
  19. Never had a problem with a vaccine, but my brother developed tinnitus after a shingle’s vax. Went to CVS for both Covid and flu shot this week. No issues, Pharmacist said they now offer an attenuated Covid vaccine.
  20. Well, alright! Hook ‘em!
