  1. The ninth circuit denied a stay of Alsup’s order to reinstate the fired federal probationary employees. The cote was 2-1. How soon will SCOTUS act on this? Day after tomorrow? https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25589924-order-denying-admin-stay/
  2. I thought oil prices were falling. And the deplorable chalk up another shameful victory: ”Navajo Code Talkers disappear from military websites after Trump DEI order” https://www.axios.com/local/salt-lake-city/2025/03/17/navajo-code-talkers-trump-dei-military-websites-wwii
  3. You joke, and I laughed. The better play would have been to kidnap the immunity voting SCOTUS justices, and fly them to Gitmo. And constantly explain why their ruling was a threat to the Constitution, and that, therefore, they already had agreed that their kidnapping was legal and that Biden had immunity from any consequence for doing so. Explain that if they would rescind the ruling they would be released. All what ifs aside, it was apparent this was coming. Past presidents made hard choices that held on to the Republic. As much as I love Joe, I can’t help but see his return to politics as usual, which he was great at, as a huge mistake.
  4. Well, did he have turnip riddled with Seal Team bullets? Apparently, he had the power to do so, given the threat turnip then posed, and now demonstrates.
  5. Haven’t seen this posted. Republicans are throwing the confetti they’ve made of the Constitution in the air.
  6. The persecuting has hit a higher gear,. ”Attorney General Ken Paxton Announces Arrest of Houston-Area Abortionist and Crackdown on Clinics Providing Illegal Abortions Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, for providing illegal abortions and illegally operating a network of clinics in the Northwest Houston area. Rojas, a midwife known as “Dr. Maria,” was taken into custody in Waller County and charged with the illegal performance of an abortion, a second-degree felony, as well as practicing medicine without a license.” https://www.oag.state.tx.us/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-announces-arrest-houston-area-abortionist-and-crackdown-clinics
  7. Republicans are in full revolt against the law. “A kidney transplant specialist and professor at Brown University’s medical school has been deported from the United States, even though she had a valid visa and a court order temporarily blocking her expulsion, according to her lawyer and court papers.” https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/16/us/brown-university-rasha-alawieh-professor-deported.html?unlocked_article_code=1.4U4.QrEr.UrgkZpB3n34R&smid=url-share Edit: @bolverk already posted this in DT.
  8. A French lawmaker is demanding the return of the Statue of Liberty. https://www.newsweek.com/french-lawmaker-demands-return-statue-liberty-2045670
  9. By studying USAID memos, the NYT estimates that “dark maga’s” demonic plan will result in the deaths of over three million people by the end of the year. I think this is the link Might be wrong because I canceled my subscription. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/02/health/usaid-cuts-deaths-infections.html
  10. Fine. Orban hasn’t, yet. What about the second part of my post? Do you think the US military will not balk at being deployed against its citizens? If you think there is a chance that could happen, then an opportunity to weed out, diminish, those principled enough to object would be a safer first step. Trump certainly acts like a moron. But, he is not the only power player in this threat to our Republic.
  11. Can you think of a past authoritarian leader, in control of a powerful military, who did not seek to expand their rule, and empire? We hear of the hope that our military will fracture if ordered to invade Canada. Firing on US citizens who resist the dismantling of our Constitutional Republic is, to me, more likely to create that sort of discord among the fighting forces. What better way to force the issue than to order the Pentagon to attack foreign lands?
  12. Three hour ago, the news was that a federal judge issued a restraining order. What did I miss? https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/03/15/judge-blocks-trump-alien-enemies-act/82408225007/
  13. Another green card immigrant detained and held for unspecified reasons. This time “violent interrogation“ is alleged. The guy is an electrical engineer from Germany, with a family, including US born children. I guess it isn’t safe for green card holders to leave the country. https://www.nhpr.org/nh-news/2025-03-14/green-card-holder-from-new-hampshire-interrogated-at-logan-airport-detained
  14. Former dean of University of Michigan Law, Lee Bollinger: I read posts on Surly written by folks who demonstrate this failure of imagination. I’m probably prone to the same failing, but not on the finding out part of electing the turnip.
  15. So, the wind will direct this fire toward Fredericksburg?
  16. So turnip continues to lie to stoke hatred and cast transgender people as the threatening other. The event is Arizona Trail 800. Yes, the winner record holder was a trans woman whose name is Austin Killips, and yes, she beat the old record by five hours. What turnip’s claim omits is that the record Killips beat was held by a man, and that the record that man broke was held by a woman. Additionally, Killips record has since been beaten. Obviously, AT800 is open to all who wish (qualify?) to compete, The coda to this is Killips’ decision on how to use the platform that turnip had given her. She called out lawmakers who feign concern about protecting women’s sports by challenging them to show their concern by adequately funding women’s sports. I think Killips’ response is the best place to read more, and it is a good read. The AT800 is damn interesting. When a competitor is not pedaling, they are carrying their bike over terrain. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/commentisfree/2025/feb/20/trump-trans-women-sport-austin-killips
  17. I would feel the same way, were I you. Luckily, my MIL is a suspicious woman. Not of family, but of news from the world. She sees the silver lining in having a reason to go to the Capitol and be among other folk, while standing present for her beliefs. I have warned her to expect her SS check to vanish, and I don’t think she believes it possible. She doesn’t need it, (though millions absolutely do need it,) other than it buttresses her (correct) belief that she is still an earner. She’s 92, a treasure, and may painful death await anyone who harms her in any way. Means testing is a good idea, imo, to improve SS, but reasonable dialogue and compromise might as well be in another universe. I guarantee
  18. Harris earned my respect. Not that my respect carries much weight. I’d vote for Harris again, but not in a gubernatorial election against Katie Porter in 2026.
  19. “Killing” courts was not on my bingo card. A nod to acknowledge the nightmare fuel.
  20. I appreciate your response. And I wasn’t under the delusion that DOGE relies on federal funding. Rather, I wonder DOGE’s actions during a government shutdown would degrade the weight that the sanction provided by the executive carries in the eyes of the court.
  21. Sorry, but I need to say this. If there is a God, you are making the same mistake religions make, when they define, or limit, that which is God. Personally, I believe that God is truth and God is what is. So the truth is God is not deus ex machina for everyone,. Clearly, God is not that.
  22. I posted the following in the Democrat thread, but this thread has more contributors. There are elected Democrats who I believe are working for the good of the Republic. Unlike Republicans, unless you have given up on the Constitution. Unfortunately, there are plenty of Democrats in the pocket of billionaires. Tomorrow’s cloture vote is apparently rather critical. And,it is not surprising, but deeply disappointing, because the waters are muddying, to see that Shumer is arguing to approve cloture, To be fair, he argues that a government shutdown gives DOGE free reign, and that courts will close, and there will be no safeguards. I, personally, don’t trust Shumer, and the Dems I do trust say that voting for cloture is what will free DOGE to completely kneecap our government. I know that any bipartisan vote that can be spinned as support of DOGE is devastating. So, what am I missing? What say y’all? Is DOGE unaffected by a government shutdown? Are the courts?
