  1. I perused the Conservative and Republican forums on Reddit. Holy cow. Talk about an echo chamber of delusion. They’ve structured these forums so that dissenting viewpoints that point out disinformation aren’t allowed. As a result, none of the ridiculous posts of disinformation are ever challenged. This reinforces their delusion even further. It’s really concerning. These people are living in a fantasy world.
  2. Missouri isn’t very good, but A&M looked pretty solid. Elko has them performing to a standard so far, unlike Jimbo who chronically underachieved. And he’s doing it with a lot of talent gaps. They’ve got losses ahead of them, but they can complete the season with some level of dignity, unlike Jimbo teams. Aggie fans should be encouraged. If they continue to recruit well, it’s a program with potential. It’s too bad their fans are a bunch of rubes. And I almost always over-estimate what they will/can do, so I’m sure they will revert to form.
  3. Today on Facebook I learned from my former real estate agent neighbor in Houston that the reason Hurricane Helena happened is because BlackRock and the Democrats conspired to cloud seed clouds so that the hurricane would wipe out the Republicans before the election and BlackRock would then be able to steal their land full of lithium deposits. I’m not kidding. Dead serious. This is the level of intellect we have in the world today. Idiocracy was not a documentary. It portrayed people as too intelligent.
  4. This is a preview of the officiating we will see in College Station. Will have to overcome that too.
  5. That has been the main Fox News story all day. Sigh.
  6. Hold on. I have heard this. I was on a web site dedicated to Teas Longhorn fans, and it was discussed.
  7. I spent 25 years in the venture capital/startup world. When I first started, it was a brilliant concept that launched powerful fantastic companies that changed the world in a positive way. It then quickly became essentially a Ponzi scheme to get rich by dumping crap companies on all of us. One of many ways to do that was by taking advantage of index investing, which buys companies regardless of their quality. VC’s and founders know full well they are pitching fraud, but don’t care. Investor beware. WeWork was a great example, and now VC’s have funded that grifter yet again. Capitalism is partially broken right now.
  8. Just like several other issues, anyone who disagrees on this issue MUST! bE a bIgoT. Dahobbs and Brisket you guys are both smarter than this. Dixon is right. Do better.
  9. For many years Craig Miller was solid because his dry humor bits were a nice balance to Jub and Gordo. But he’s become stale on those. I do still like it when he brings in interesting stats, like his Astros stats this morning. I really didn’t like Bob and Corby together but listened yesterday and there were a few moments where Bob started to mesh better and actually had funny side comments in the background. With Davy Lane, that show could actually become tolerable again. Maybe.
  10. Unlike Immamac, I see this thread as important. This discussion is not about the volleyball game. It’s not about transgender participation in athletics. It’s about how the mind of the public is manipulated for political gain. The current Republican formula for successfully gaining support is to take an emotional issue, like this or immigration for example, and establish a very simple idea that people can rally around. “Of course no one wants to see transgender men unfairly have advantages over women in sports, they say. Of course we don’t want millions of people pouring across the border, they say.” In a two minute sound bite society, most people have no time or interest to explore an issue further. Some of those people are bigots, racists, or misogynists. But many aren’t. They just have a simple viewpoint based upon a ten second reflection. So better border control sounds good banning men from women’s sports sounds reasonable. Then the people who are more educated on the topic call those people racists, misogynists, and bigots. And in the meantime, the issue being raised often is not addressed over time, elevating its visibility. Those actions then harden the other group, cementing their tribe. No one wants to be called bigots, racists, or misogynists when they aren’t. It’s offensive. So then you hear the tribe cry “We will not be woke!” To be honest, I’m a simple cave man often caught in the middle. It’s a tiring story plot that plays out a million times a day. Yet almost everyone gets drawn into that same play all the time. That’s the only thing I’ve really taken away from this thread
  11. This is why I like to checkin on surly. You hear interesting viewpoints on issues. This is an interesting idea. As a side note, I don’t understand why people line up so neatly on this issue to their already existing political affiliation. I would have thought this issue would have brought mixed viewpoints, given its complexity. But everyone is in their box.
  12. Because the yield curve has to uninvert, and short term rates (<1 yr)are still above 10 year rates. That, combined with a greater chance of inflation taking off again due to rate cuts has led the 10 year to waffle around. If the economy stays reasonably strong (2Q gdp was 3%), the Fed will NOT reach its projected terminal rate (well below 4%), and long term rates will potentially rise, not fall. 10 year rates will fall if the economy stumbles significantly.
  13. Thanks. I didn’t intend for my post to sound CR. I mentioned that Biden did not do enough to get it under control. The American Rescue plan had to also contribute. Massive government spending has caused it, and both parties are at fault. I just find it frustrating that hardly anyone points out the over stimulus by the previous admin.
  14. That actor makes me laugh every time he opens his mouth. He’s either a genius actor or a dumbass.

    RIP Pete Rose

The other interesting item from that documentary was that the whole “hustle” thing wasn’t a bit. His brain was truly wired that way, right or wrong. It makes sense when you see that he was fundamentally an addict.

    RIP Pete Rose

It was 1968 and I attended my first baseball game ever at Crosley field in Cincinnati. In the lineup that day were Bench, Rose, Perez and May. I was too young to remember much but it did instill a love of baseball throughout the 70’s for the Big Red Machine. Always rooted for Rose. Over time it became clear he was a bit of an ass and a gambling cheater. I don’t think he should be in the HOF. Mfr gambled on Reds games. The complaints about him being an over-rated hitter are ridiculous.
  17. So I just watched the game, obviously without the emotional element of real-time. Thoughts on the game: 1. Arch - holy shit. He was really really good. He missed a few things but several times hit the 2nd or third read. His passes were mostly on the money. His running was solid. Man, this dude is for real, as we all knew he is. He played better this game. 2. Formula for Upsets - despite not being able to see the game, by the texts I was getting you would have thought Texas was a complete disaster. But really, the opponent slowed the game down with a persistent running attack, Texas had key mistakes at inopportune times, the tackling and angles were off at times, and they had way too many penalties. That is the formula for getting upset. But Texas still looked good a lot on D and O. Just need to reduce the mistakes. I’m less worried than I was before I saw the game. 3. Wisner - solid. No surprise. 4. Broughton and Gbenda- have these two started to turn the corner? 5. Stickiness - I like our DB stickiness as compared to previous Sark teams. 6. Run Defense - I didn’t see guys getting blown off the ball, I saw more of LB’s in the wrong place. Lebby was the OC last year when they beat Texas. He knows how to draw up an offensive game plan against Texas that exploits its weaknesses. 7. Speed - man the speed at WR is amazing Overall, I feel ok going into OU. After seeing Georgia roar back, that game is going to be a lot tougher. Enjoy this ride. It should be a good one, and maybe a great one.
  18. Just sat down to watch the Miss St game because I missed it. The DVR didn’t record it for some reason. Anyone know how I can re-watch the whole game? YouTube stuff all seem like highlights only.
  19. Surly is quoting Miley Cyrus now? Really? That just breaks my achy breaky heart.
  20. Feel free to come to me for free advice about life, love, and football.
  21. I don’t know Auburn’s NIL situation, but it is a school with a fair amount of rich alumni.
  22. Once you start treatment of Type 2 diabetes, either thru diet control, or meds, it is very typical for A1c to drop dramatically for a long time, even several years. Keeping up with good eating habits delays more aggressive treatments. Weight loss is also dramatic. I lost 25 pounds and I wasn’t that overweight to begin with. I was only 10 pounds overweight. Doctors often won’t test for type1/2 if the diabetes develops later in life because the treatments are similar. I found out after 20 years that I was actually type 1/2, not type 2, after a doctor looked at my strange sugar charts and suspected something and ran blood tests. as per above there is now type 1/2 as well. I’ve seen huge positive impacts to meditation. Tried it myself dozens of time but couldn’t get hooked. The people that do have incredibly positive experiences dealing with stress. 10% Happier is an interesting book.
  23. I don’t want to bet dollars, but I’m pretty confident Bama passes Texas. And even winning out, including over Georgia, wouldn’t put Texas in front of an undefeated Bama, unless they smoke Georgia. Of course, given yesterday’s game, going undefeated sounds a lot tougher. But we might be seeing a Bama Texas SEC championship game.
