As has been discussed Arnold was not a five star and should not have already been starting at OU. With all that said, I watched him play a few times and he’s got something. With development he can probably be a reasonably good QB. It will be hilarious if he ends up performing better than whoever they get. That would be two QB’s in a row they lost who outperformed.

Bawaahahaha. 52-80 tried to argue incessantly that the Texas communications program was irrelevant for football players making decisions on schools, and the very FIRST portal transfer called out the communications dept as a significant reason for committing to Texas.

I come out of high tech management and Austin historically had been a weak tech location as compared to other areas around the country. Dallas actually for many years had better tech than Austin, believe it or not. But then in the 2000's+ Austin really started to get much more solid in tech. Part of the reason for this was the creation of new VC funds in Austin after Austin Ventures imploded. Plus, Austin got discovered as being hip due to SXSW, etc. So, the tech industry here has really started to become a solid, but still behind the bay area, and spots on the East Coast. The long-term outlook is very good. If you dig into tech here a bit deeper, it's still driven today quite a bit by being the 2nd/3rd/4th location for tech companies on the west coast. They setup here as a lower cost location to supplement other higher cost centers. Some of those cost advances are waning. When recessions hit, 2nd locations are always hit harder. Whenever I went thru a recession over the years, I'd always cut other locations ahead of key, prime locations, for many reasons. Austin actually has never seen what a recession will do to it because of tech, because the tech industry here didn't get strong enough until after the last recession in 2008. People don't know what's coming, if we do hit a hard recession. Now of course the activity by Apple and Elon will blunt the impact, but even they will put the brakes on activity during a recession. The surrounding suburbs will also feel it. You'd be amazed at how many tech industry workers live in Buda, Leander, etc. The State government and University will also limit the damage obviously. I can't talk personally to the health insurers but got off the phone yesterday with a health insurance broker who told me the whole industry is in complete turmoil. I could go into more detail on the conversation, but you can google it. They are making money because they all raised rates dramatically. The fear is that costs are spiraliing out of control so fast they may keep having to do it. I can't stand Elon Musk. I think the Cybertruck is the dumbest vehicle created in history. But, you have to acknowledge when the world's richest man wants to spend a lot of money in your city and build a lot of businesses. If you look at the history of cities around the country, many of them were "made" by one or a few key companies or people. For example, Portland was made by Nike, Tektronix and a few other companies. Elon's impact here, if he doesn't waver, will be substantial over time. -
This is an outstanding post. Thank you for posting it. That’s the sort of clear government statement that I kept waiting to hear. It’s a reminder that in a world of instant social media, media outlets no longer have the time, or desire?, to check into a story before posting about it. The government was a little slow to respond with clear information too.

The Austin market is complicated. There are multiple conflicting trends: Downward Trends 1. Hiring, layoffs - stalled across most tech companies. This has slowed migration here. 2. Current prices - as someone mentioned, listings are still clinging to 2022 prices in some cases and just sitting. Listings that adjust sell ok. 3. Water - a lack of it could stop progress in its tracks 4. Recession - a bad recession will disproportionately hit Austin very hard because of tech here. 5. Failing Insurance Industries - the price increases are stunning, yet health and property insurers have still been struggling to make a profit. These massive insurance price increases push down real estate prices. If it doesn’t get under control soon, we have a serious serious problem. As my insurance friend always says, the world runs on the back of insurance and when it’s screwed up the economy gets screwed up. Upward Trends 1. Elon - he will single handedly lift Central Texas real estate over the next 10 years. He will move so many businesses here, it will produce significant real estate price increases. 2. Apple - as long as Apple doesn’t cancel their facility here, it will produce a very significant increase in employment and surrounding effects. 3. Trend lines and Comparative Prices - trend lines are okay and Austin prices are still inline with or attractive compared to other high employment areas of the country. Desirability of Austin is neutral at this point because of politics and current prices. So my thinking is that we could see some short term pain but the longer term trends are fine as long as the issues above get resolved. -
Of course there are mountain lions all over central texas and have been since I was younger. I saw one myself hunting in the 1980's, and we have one on camera here in Leander in the last two years. The guys on the Ticket in Dallas keep arguing that there weren't mountain lions up there for a long time but that's bs too. I know multiple folks who saw them over the years.

Big risk was the wrong word. I would more accurately just say “risk”. Davis had struck out on his top few targets and these guys were the next level down, and it was discussed on the board that some of these guys were undersized or were motivation risks (like Mitchell). A few on the board were “over the moon” about the takes, and tried to shut down any discussion of limitations of those takes. My only point is that a lot of the posters, myself included, knew there were some risks with that whole group, so the current situation is not a surprise to me at all.

As compared to 10 years ago, it seems to be getting a little easier predicting who will be a bust in a recruiting class. Ross, Bryant, Mitchell, etc. were all flagged as pretty big risks when they signed, except by a few fanboys who blindly love everyone Texas takes, usually with a “trust the coaches” reference.

Did he lose his eye? Because I’m still trying to think of many/any talents Davis recruited to Texas.

Why in the world would local governments have any answers? They can’t deal with drones. They have no tools to deal with drones, for the most part. They’ve just started deploying a few themselves in the last few years. It’s the federal government that has the technology to evaluate drones and also shoot them down. The Federal government is ignoring this because it’s likely local amateur dipshits, and since local government is ill-equipped, this will keep happening until Chinese nationals start flying spy drones across and into facilities. The whole thing is stupid. It’s just like the balloon. That damn thing should have been shot down in Alaska. We are such pussies.

I'm completely confused by this entire thread. There are a bunch of nutty people claiming UFO's or aliens, or others claiming it's foreign government drones. None of those is likely, obviously. But, there are many people on this thread claiming they aren't even drones and that all of the sightings are either just people mis-identifying planes and helicopters as drones, or conspiracy theorists. I'm not getting that from the dozen or so stories that have been running on neutral national news sources like PBS, ABC, NBC, BBC, etc. I've just been assuming it's amatuer drone operators are flying drones near these facilities. It started happening in one place, and dipshits started doing it everywhere. Is that not a reasonable scenario? Why are people jumping straight to misidentification or conspiracy theories. I'm lost. What am I missing?

This thread mostly deals with the physical ailments of getting old. But there are some interesting non-physical health related aspects of getting old. There are mental related aspects of getting old and also huge learnings from getting old. From 50-60, my entire perspective of the world has changed pretty significantly. I wish younger me could have tapped into the “right” older person’s brains more to hear their views on various topics. The challenge, of course, is that some people are as dumb or dumber when they are 60 as they were when they were younger. The key is tapping into the brains of the right people on the right topics. I wonder whether there would be interest in a “thoughts from old guys/gals” thread. Probably not. Anyone under 50 thinks they have it all figured out.

Someone needs to update that Aggie graphic that shows every highly ranked QB that has left in the last few years.

All foreigners receive an exclusion from my rule, particularly Australians.

I have a bias that I’d prefer to see players transfer in who have only made one stop. Two or more stops before Texas seems like just a money grab, not a desire to be developed and showcased.

She does actually say drones in this clip. Now to your point, there is a chance that she purposely made the reference to drones unclear, but that would be an epic level of word salad if so. I think that is very debatable But more importantly, she leaves the very clear impression that there is “activity” going on that is being investigated by local law enforcement. She never once hints or indicates that it is a case of mistaking normal planes or helicopters for something else. Obviously some sightings are going to be false, but there seems to be an acknowledgement that there are unusual sightings happening at multiple locations.

Was driving out in the hill country and was flipping stations. Listened to some sec oriented radio show which I later realized was Finebaum’s. Besides hating his guts, his sec callers were the biggest hillbilly morons I’ve ever listened to in my life. And apparently some of the same callers call in all the time. These people are truly stupid. What the hell has Texas mixed itself up with.
