One reason I doubt there’ll be a “mini primary” now is that I don’t think the other major candidates would run. There’s not enough time for them to win support. The process would be too unclear. Party is too exhausted. Harris looks too strong. (People shouldn’t underestimate how closely party elites have been watching her these last few weeks, and how much she’s shifted opinions in her favor.) You might get some token opposition from people who want to raise their profiles, do CNN town halls, etc - which could be good for Harris because her win would be both contested and overwhelming — but strongly doubt you’d get Newsom, Whitmer (already said she won’t run), Shapiro, Beshear, etc. Safer for them to position for VP or 2028. If Biden had stepped aside weeks ago it might’ve been different. If Jaime Harrison had been thinking through options rather than making himself a Biden-no-matter-what guy, maybe it would have been different. But that’s my read of where the party is now. (Caveats: Everything is fluid, Biden might still just refuse to step aside, if Harris falters that could change sentiment, etc)
