Overrated Austin restaurants?
Honestly, for the amount of business they do and the fact that they consistently pack that space with a wait, the fact that I can go there and, not having "best meal ever" expectation, can order something that doesn't disappoint me is pretty remarkable. It still probably qualifies as that place in Austin (see my post above), but it has a good view in every direction and, I can't believe I'm saying this (see above), but I've enjoyed some good margaritas there.

Beat me by mere minutes, although I definitely associate Highlights with the dentist's office.

I mean, a Chicago Italian Beef - "Wet" is not an unglorious thing.

I think Molina's is fine. It's not mind-blowing, but I wouldn't complain if someone suggested it, and I'd have the nostalgia factor and order Jose's Dip, which seems the same as Bob Armstrong dip, but I digress.

As a native Houstonian, I kind of wondered if Houston's answer to this wasn't Molina's. I grew up with it and really love it, but since I'm the guy telling you I like it, I wonder if it's the one people who didn't grow up in Houston going to that really isn't that great? But I'm sure Houston has several that qualify. As a transplant to Tyler, I can tell you that Tyler's version of this was Gilbert's El Charro. That place sucked and old-school Tyler people loved it. Mercifully, it closed years ago.- Burgers

Thanks, I'll definitely give it a go soon. But for now, I need time and distance from Hamburger Chili Rice first.- Shit I've Cooked Lately
I almost shit myself just reading that. And now that that feeling has subsided, I desperately want some chili mac.- Burgers
The internet is wrong. It closed in 1992, two weeks after I got to Austin. I probably ate there four times during those two weeks. I started eating there some time in the early 80s when my sister was at UT, and it was my first stop after I moved into the dorm.- Overrated Austin restaurants?
Every town has a nostalgic Tex-Mex spot where people who didn't basically grow up with it realize it's not really very good. But the people who grew up with it, or who just don't know any better, rave about it and usually talk about how good the margaritas are.- Burgers

Can't seem to create something crazily-silly enough for this commie-Surly thread. Cause similes versus cultish snark, all I got is Cutty Sark.- Burgers

How's the overally divey-ness of Busty's? If we go out after Tex-Mex next Thursday, I've got it earmarked as a backup for Lala's Little Nugget. Also, for @South Austin, you gotta do something about that. I only lived in Austin for four years and made a point to hit up Top Notch after Dazed & Confused came out. Solid burger and fries combination. Kind of reminded me of Luke's in Houston (if anyone remembers that; Apparently, it's Annie's Now and looks similar). But a solid burger-stand type burger by any estimation. Also, my go-to for any burger joint where I'm not familiar with the other options is a cheeseburger how I like it. If a place can't get a basic burger all the way (with a few personalized wrinkles) right, it's unworthy.- The Guitar Pron Thread
My strat is made from a Classic Vibe strat body and sounds great, even when not plugged in. Did you fiddle with the pickup height at all? Oh, wait, I just remembered that mine has Am Std pickups in it. Disregard all but the acoustic playing take.- Ace Frehley - RIP
They'd better pay him, or he might try to settle by offering to let him slam one of their balls in the door.- Tell me about New York City
Until an expert arrives to answer your question: My NYC experience over NYE was a long time ago, but so was my experience in NOLA during a different NYE. And here's my take based on repeated visits to both cities since then: I honestly didn't notice a difference between NYC between Christmas and New Year's Eve versus any other time I have been there. There are a lot of people there either way. Even getting down to Time Square on the 31st wasn't a big deal (we were at a concert at MSG), and by the time we got back on the street, Time Square was a ghost town and cabs were nonexistent. I imagine hotels after the big night are going to be easier to come by and possibly more reasonable (but see hotels are expensive thread). But other than being cold and snowing a bit, it was just like any other trip to NYC for me. I'm a total sucker for top of the Empire State Building as a tourist. American History museum and Central Park are always a good way to spend my day. Frank in the East Village is delicious. I was in the quarter in NOLA for NYE when Texas was playing in the Sugar Bowl. I'll never do that again. It was like Mardi Gras times 10 and absolutely miserable. The rest of the city was fine. That's just to say that if I had my pick of spending NYE in either of those cities, it would be NYC 6 days-a-week and twice on Sunday. Again, I wouldn't hesitate to go in very early January (but haven't been at that time).- Will UT Bend the Knee?
I was thinking more along the lines of the fail horn from The Price is Right, which, as I type that, I realize is 100% appropriate from an irony standpoint. - Overrated Austin restaurants?
