Tell me about New York City
Until an expert arrives to answer your question: My NYC experience over NYE was a long time ago, but so was my experience in NOLA during a different NYE. And here's my take based on repeated visits to both cities since then: I honestly didn't notice a difference between NYC between Christmas and New Year's Eve versus any other time I have been there. There are a lot of people there either way. Even getting down to Time Square on the 31st wasn't a big deal (we were at a concert at MSG), and by the time we got back on the street, Time Square was a ghost town and cabs were nonexistent. I imagine hotels after the big night are going to be easier to come by and possibly more reasonable (but see hotels are expensive thread). But other than being cold and snowing a bit, it was just like any other trip to NYC for me. I'm a total sucker for top of the Empire State Building as a tourist. American History museum and Central Park are always a good way to spend my day. Frank in the East Village is delicious. I was in the quarter in NOLA for NYE when Texas was playing in the Sugar Bowl. I'll never do that again. It was like Mardi Gras times 10 and absolutely miserable. The rest of the city was fine. That's just to say that if I had my pick of spending NYE in either of those cities, it would be NYC 6 days-a-week and twice on Sunday. Again, I wouldn't hesitate to go in very early January (but haven't been at that time).

Will UT Bend the Knee?
I was thinking more along the lines of the fail horn from The Price is Right, which, as I type that, I realize is 100% appropriate from an irony standpoint.

Old post, but my wife and sister in law went there a couple of weeks ago, and even the leftovers I got out of the fridge and ate cold the next day were amazing.

2025 Tailgate Thread - Let's Party
Okay, so it sounds like you're saying Vanderbilt is a test case. It might be fine if someone else (who was supposed to all along?) steps up to do the legwork, or, if that doesn't happen, it might look like a bunch of stuff was delivered but isn't set up or otherwise organized in any usable fashion (or somewhere in between)? I guess if it's the latter, we can just head to the alumni center, but we'll plan stop by Surlygate first to see if it's functional and someone is there to scan our tickets. That's for sure my preference.

2025 Tailgate Thread - Let's Party
Sorry for being dense, but since I've already bought four tickets for this one before the season started and have people coming in from out of state, you're saying there's going to be booze and beer in the area? I'm honestly not complaining. If I'm out the money, just consider it another donation. But I don't want to head that way early if there nothing but an assortment of booze and warm beer 20 paces from an abandoned stripper pole. Or is there a setup, but maybe no TVs and food? I don't care what the answer is, but I would kind of like to know what the answer is so I can plan accordingly. You mentioned an announcement in the "Florida debacle" thread, but I never saw one until this post. So if you could explain it to me like I'm five, it'd be much appreciated.

Yeah, it's like Fender wanted to copy the 60s, Japanese copy sunburst. Despite Jimmy-Jazz's take on it, I rather like it. Kind of understated. My first electric was a Teisco (?) like this one but no vibrato arm port. My Uncle bought it in the 60s and gave it to me along with a Ventura hollow bass and a 1962 Gibson LG-0. I still have the Gibson.

Tex Mex
Vibe is a moving target for a group of married dudes in their early 50s. Decent beer selections, solid margs, and no visible water stains on the ceiling is the floor. Thanks for the suggestions so far. Y mas closes at 9. So that might push it out of the running depending on what time the last of our group arrives, unpacks, and pregames.

Tex Mex
So what's your favorite? LIke I said, it doesn't have to be super close. I'll mention Curra as well. I haven't had good interior in a minute. Of the 3 I mentioned, what's the consensus. Is El Dorado worth the trouble? Does Y Mas have a decent evening vibe or is it just straight-up delicious? Mama Betty's? Just okay? I've been to most of the standard fare during the years I lived in Austin and those that follow. These guys are from Texas, so I'm not taking them to Matt's or the like.

It was the free, online lessons that got you, right?

Tex Mex
I'm hosting some friends from out of state (all originally from Houston), and they requested Tex Mex one night. My sister in law recommended El Dorado Cafe, which looks good. But we're planning to go on the Thursday night when everyone gets in, and the last arrival is at 5:20 p.m. I see they take reservations. So I guess we could shoot for 8:15 or 8:30. But I hate feeling rushed, particularly with Tex Mex. So for a combination of good food and decent evening vibe, would Enchiladas Y Mas or Mamma Betty's be a better choice? Other suggestions. We're in an Air B&B just east of 35 and north of campus. Closer could be better, but it doesn't really matter. What says the Surly Tex Mex Brain trust?

- Government Shutdown 2025: This Time It’s Personal
So a baby, in a boat, on a road walks into a bar with a poodle under one arm and a 5 lb. salami under the other arm. The baby sets the poodle on the bar, and the bartender says, I guess you won't be needing a drink. And the baby says, . . . .- Government Shutdown 2025: This Time It’s Personal
Wait, I thought it was a boat?- Guitar Effect Pedalphile Thread
Yeah, I heard for years that a TS in front of a tweed amp is just to much mids. But when it comes down to it, if you crank a tweed bassman and hit the front end with a tube screamer in a live setting, it sounds glorious and cuts through beautifully.- Guitar Effect Pedalphile Thread
If there's anything special about how they sound, I didn't hear it in the many years I owned one. My memory of that pedal is that the housing and connection points were cheap and it seemed doomed to break under foot. A reissue with a $40 analogman mod (either brown or silver) is a far better pedal for less money. - Government Shutdown 2025: This Time It’s Personal
