- Thinking about college athletics for my daughter
To clarify, she quit after her junior year in high school, but was recruited by several small schools before she quit. She got into Wake Forest on academics.- Thinking about college athletics for my daughter
A friend of mine whose daughter was in the "rowing" scene called it the cheat code for getting any kid into a decent college. It's a lot though. His daughter burned out by the end of her junior year. Now's she's a NARP (non-athletic regular person) and is going to Wake Forest next year. She probably wouldn't have gotten into Wake for rowing, but she was recruited by several schools her junior year.- Time for another ‘my dog is awesome’ thread

- Austin Fine Dining - Anniversary Dinner recs
Which anniversary? As long as it isn't divisible by 5, don't sleep on Hopfields. I know it usually gets mentioned for its burgers, but the dinner ambience is very good as is the dinner menu. The Beef Cheeks Bourguignon I had a few years ago still haunts my dreams. Not overly fancy, but they serve some good, honest food.- Vertical Smoker: Pros/Cons
I'd ask $1,500 and be prepared to come down to $1,000. I realize they're asking $4,600 new for what appears to be the 48x24" barrel, but for something that's 3/16" thick with a 1/4" firebox, that seems like a pretty high price. It's nice that stainless doesn't rust, but it doesn't seem to be the best material for holding a consistent temperature. But what it lacks in thickness, it seems to make up for in the cooking surface. So that's a plus. But it's hard to see how that vertical section does with the airflow. I'm just spit-balling on that price. For an apples to oranges comparison, I bought a new 48x24 (3/8" thick) pipe smoker spec'd out custom for me last year for $2,500. But maybe there's a market for a combo smoker like this that I'm not aware of.- Texas BBQ
Terry Black's in Dallas is fine for a no-line place based on my anecdotal experience. But it's going to suffer to a degree from being a chain at this point.- Texas BBQ
I've had two good meals at the Dallas location, but I'll never go back to the Waco location. Really subpar plate of food at that location. A lot of the Austin brisket apparently is cooked at the Lockhart location and trucked in these days.- Texas BBQ
For years, Stanley's sourced meat through Country Meat Market in Tyler. It's a good business, but they sell Black Label Reserve Beef, which is "high choice" (top 2/3 choice). I've never been disappointed with what I buy there, but I'm not trying to sell brisket. A couple of years ago, they switched to Cut Beef, a local ranch. Pasture raised cattle, but I presume not graded. I gather they couldn't keep up with demand. 44Farms has been a change for the better.- DNA kits revealing some secrets.....

Also, this is Bubba. He's an American Bully, but he's kind of small in stature. But he's got them lats. Still, even though he's small, he weighs around 60 lbs. He's fairly useless. Scary looking but scared of everything. My friend was pet sitting him.- Time for another ‘my dog is awesome’ thread

It reoccurred to me that I currently own a car and the founder of that car company was, in fact, Hitler. I'm sure glad I never bought a Tesla.- Texas BBQ
Tried the half-chicken at Stanley's today. It was great in the taste department, but it was in the neutral zone between dry and juicy in the breast. Probably working out the kinks in getting it cooked and held, but it's not quite there yet. But the rub on the skin was great, and the included side of Clucker sauce made up for small sins in the cook.- Do you and your spouse sleep in a separate room?
Two things that suck about traveling, likely lack of bidets and white noise machines (my wife had a Marpac app that was discontinued. Not sure if she still does, but I need to sideload it onto my phone for travel.- Do you and your spouse sleep in a separate room?
I can't fall asleep to the flickering light of the TV, but we use our Google Home speaker as a white noise machine. Occasionally, I'll play rain sounds on it. The ocean one wasn't as good, but those things have lots of relaxing sounds programmed. And if you don't like the internet speakers, there's always the gold standard: Marpac mechanical white noise machine. We got a pair of them when our second child was born (so he wouldn't wake up the 3 year old. You can tune them and block out just about everything.- Texas BBQ
I would have have described it as better than fine back then but not great. What I ate the other night was great, and I don't know what could be improved. I forgot to mention above that they also changed their beef source to 44Farms in the last year. The vibe is awesome for sure.- High
