  1. Vigilance certainly is the key, and someone worse/smarter may come along. But I think Trump, to a large degree, was a perfect storm of awful and resonanting notoriety, and just any old chode with his playbook won't be enough to get the rubes off the couch or to empty their wallets further. This is my hope anyway.
  2. At this point, I've resigned myself to the fact that nearly all of his supporters who haven't seen the light simply are lost. There is no reasonable discussion to be had. When it comes to a couple of my family members, smart though they may otherwise appear, the best we can do is the detente of not talking about politics at all.
  3. Hey, he was hot, and he was hungry (and racist).
  4. "We" as in Trump and his ilk. Good. But the United States will continue to have elections without Trump.
  5. This is refreshing. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/03/our-trump-reporting-upsets-some-readers-but-there-arent-two-sides-to-facts-letter-from-the-editor.html Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts: Letter from the Editor Published: Mar. 30, 2024, 8:16 a.m.
  6. Warren's vocals gave me chills. Good stuff!
  7. I realized that I misread his post, and edited my response (too late). You've hit the nail right on the hammer: it's a matter of basic, human decency.
  8. Generally speaking, I no more want politics in a church than I want a church in my politics. But Pro-LGBTQ+ and being kind to other people doesn't strike me as political, but rather, basic human decency. We greatly are outnumbered.
  9. As is often said, Christianity wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for a great majority of the Christians.
  10. For what it's worth, the Episcopalian church we have been attending since leaving the Methodist church we attended once it went "Global" has said, in no uncertain terms, that politics and the like have no place there. They also seem to be an understanding lot when it comes to those of us who aren't always led by blind faith. It seems to me to be quite well-attended by white people, black people, Latinos, and LGTBQ alike. It was a breath of fresh air in MAGA-ridden east Texas to be sure. And they have booze at the chili cook off, as Jesus would have wanted.

    Gumbo

So after a little reflection, here's my review. It's delicious, and I'd make it again. But gumbo the traditional way is better. To get this to hold together, you have to add more rice than I prefer and reserve some of the liquid, which holds most of the flavor of gumbo. When I do it again, I'll definitely take some of the reserved liquid and drizzle it over the top.

    Held together well. Delicious!
  13. I suck at cutting pie, but you get the idea. Definitely delicious and held together well.
  14. I'm hoping its being in the fridge overnight worked some magic. But if it's a goopy mess, it'll be a tasty one.
  15. Soon. It's in the oven reheating now.

    Gumbo

I've now posted this blasphemous masterpiece in the correct gumbo thread. I'd had a few drinks when I posted last night, but something didn't look right about this thread.

    Gumbo

Because I'm a moron and somehow posted this in the wrong gumbo thread last night and for posterity's sake: Cross-posted from the shit I cooked lately thread (Easter edition). I saw an Instagram video where someone did this and decided it could not possibly be anything but delicious. Gumbo Pot Pie. I made a stock on Monday. Last night, I made the pie crust and did an oven roux ahead of time. Then, while transferring the roux from the cast iron pan to a mason jar, I knocked over the jar and spilled roux all over the counter, which sucked for two reasons---I lost my roux and what an awful mess. Got up this morning and started another oven roux (I'm convinced these have more positive contributions to the final product than the old stand-and-stir. Did all my prep, and had the gumbo ready by 4 pm. Ate some for dinner and put together the rice and gumbo mixture for the pie. This is the biggest variable and I oped for more meat that liquid and tried to keep the rice in a good balance. But it is more rice heavy than I'd have it in a bowl. Anyway, I'll post the final picture when it's reheated, sliced and served tomorrow. [

  19. I'm pretty pleased with myself. Money shot to follow when served. Behold: Gumbo Pot Pie! I'll talk about it a little in the cross-post in the Gumbo Thread.
  20. Good old Weber Kettle reverse sear with a butter bath in a medium-low pan in the house before the plate. Tasty
  21. The only thing that comes close is Jerry Garcia, and Bobby by extension and longevity. My wife still says it's her tio show. It's probably top 5 for me, easy, if not higher.
  22. Good girl, Pippa. Hope they serve steak. So do Maeby, Archie, and Gracie (not pictured)
