  1. The democrats have to figure out a way to develop a galvanizing, resonant, common message. That hasn't happened since the Clinton administration. The GOP finds this far easier, because stoking culture war fear is easier. It's the same reason conservative talk radio can be successful, and left-wing talk radio is rarely successful.
  2. I use Apple Pay pretty heavily among friends and family. Then Venmo. Paypal for some purchases.
  3. Frostline here is 18" I know a masonry fireplace requires a footing. What about outdoor masonry/brick kitchen?
  4. Things are going well in the Russian Army:
  5. Eastern offensive continues to be a huge success for Ukraine. Pace of the counter-attack has increased.
  6. This is some sort of Ukrainian soldier conversation transcript I found today (I can't vouch for its veracity): https://ukrainevolunteer297689472.wordpress.com/2022/09/30/its-a-slaughter/ "One guy had obviously stepped on a mine by the side of the road. One leg was gone at mid-thigh, the other one was broken lower down and his foot was backward. He was trying to crawl somewhere on one good knee, trailing flowing blood out of a busted artery. Unless he got help quick, he was gone. He was talking calmly in Russian, saying over-and-over, “I will be home soon mother.”"
  7. Latest from Lyman. Estimations are 1500 to 3000 Russian troops trapped. Only line of communication (egress or ingress) is under Ukrainian surveillance drone targeted artillery control.
  8. First external sanctions, then seize the workforce for what domestic manufacturing is left. Putin is strangling himself.
  9. Putin has gone all-in on the madman strategy. Hole the pipelines, ruin them for future use by seawater intrusion/corrosion, and prevent them from being a negotiation tool.
  10. Lots of noise in the last couple of hours about the Ukrainian armed forces having a big breakthrough NW of Lyman and completing the cutoff of the city and it's sizeable garrison.

  12. My sister's ex-husband got into the furniture business in Latvia and Lithuania about 20 years ago. He wanted to expand into Moscow, and visited to make some contacts. He said it was the most corrupt, hand-greasing, third-world, organized crime shit he'd ever dealt with, and he's been in Puerto Rico and Sicily. He got out of there fast.
  13. If you're a side sleeper, put a pillow between your knees.
  14. Not sure if this has been posted, but...... Does anyone know if insurance covers roof damage from falling Orcs?
  15. This. Money well spent. Gravity is a relentless, hunting bitch.
  16. some people have had success jacking the slab up, and filling the void with expanding foam insulation.
  17. Ideally, eliminating studs touching both wallboard (staggering them) is best. Solid materials transmit sound pretty well. If you're not into rebuilding the whole wall, loose fill cellulose is probably your best bet. another layer of drywall is decent too. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/increase-soundproofing-existing-wall-40553.html
  18. This may be of some import to you, but in several municipalities, new gas ranges are no longer allowed due to CO emissions, and potential health implications. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/gas-stoves-are-worse-for-climate-and-health-than-previously-thought-180979494/ (That said, I'm not giving mine up-they'll have to pry my burned, crispy hands off of it)
