  1. This guy one or two of you may be familiar with, a Texas singer-songwriter named Sam Neely. Had a couple of minor hits in the 70's, my mom had this 8-track "Neely 2" that I just fell in love with when I was a kid (along with Mark Lindsay's "Silverbird" for some reason), I finally tracked down a vinyl copy years ago and still spin it regularly. He was living in Corpus and passed away in 2006. That Neely 2 album is really good, it actually has an early Elton John feel to it ala Tumbleweed Connection or Madman Across the Water, lots of string arrangements, it's good stuff. This was his other "hit": This was probably my favorite song on that 8-track, rock n roll to an 8 year old!
  2. Damn, you guys are bringing the shit! This is exactly what I hope this thread would be, I'm discovering all kinds of new stuff, I love it!
  3. Very cool. I didn't post any Joy Division since they are obviously not obscure, but they were one of those bands I discovered through the import catalogs, still have my original 12-inch singles of She's Lost Control and Love Will Tear Us Apart. Also had an original UK pressing of Unknown Pleasures that I sold off back in college when I was broke, still kicking myself in the ass over that one. I remember seeing the Durutti Column listed a lot in those catalogs. Good stuff, I will dive deeper into their music.
  4. Yeah, I love that tune (and ELO), but it didn't really fit with the other posts, so I didn't post it, but it's still all good.
  5. Hehe. As far as I can tell, he is the only American in that studio. I think Costello originally latched on to him because if his harmonica playing Had to be, because I can't imagine what they would have thought when this guy walked in the room, Huey the Hippie!
  6. Been trying to clear the cobwebs out of my brain, came across another one - checking out wiki, apparently Mr. Myrick had done pretty well for himself over the years...
  7. I don' t know why I get a kick out of thinking about Huey Lewis hanging out with Thin Lizzy, Lowe, Edmunds, Elvis Costello et al back in the late 70's. Seems like a fish out of water...
  8. Bryan Ferry put on some weight... Looks like Canada's version of Huey Lewis & the News... (yeah, I like Huey Lewis.)
  9. Yes! Thanks for reminding me, I got this on a 12-inch EP when it came out. Bout time to dig it out and slap it on the turntable, have an 80's night!
  10. Black Crowes were one of those bands that it took me forever to like again, due to KLBJ just saturating the airwaves with them (same goes for SRV and post-Achtung Baby U2), can't handle that much of anything. Finally went and downloaded a bunch of their stuff a couple of years ago and was reminded how damn great they were. This one was always one of my favorites, not sure why, it kind of has a Lennon vibe to it, though I can't say how or why I think that, I just feel it.
  11. I agree Spoon is definitely well-known, but they've always escaped me, outside the odd video I've seen posted here or there. What I've heard I like, I'm just too old to put much money or time into digging deep into "unknown" bands anymore. I've got enough music to last 5 lifetimes, I'm happy with it. Back to Spoon, no worries, I'll allow it. Nirvana? That's just fucking trolling...
  12. Was listening to that earlier, think I'm gonna send it to my son later and see if he can play along with it, would love to do it with my band, could even slow it down and give it a country feel. I love Dave's version of it, grabs more of the Chuck Berry vibe.
  13. She sure sounds like her momma, both talking and singing.
  14. So, Aubrey Powell (of Hipgnosis) revealed that he's working on artwork for Pink Floyd "The Later Years" box set. Unfortnuately, it's been confirmed it will be all post-Waters material only. Fortunately, we should get a high-res version of Delicate Sound of Thunder and Rachel Fury shakin' dat ass (enhance, enhance...)
  15. Yes it is. Maybe my favorite Rockpile number: Dave and Carl Perkins (one of the best "tribute" specials I've ever seen...)
  16. Bwaha. So it's OUR fault nobody posts over there... Yesterday, 07:39 PM#1 8badmofo31 Moderator Join Date Jun 2008 Posts 3,493 No new posts again today Reply With Quote
  17. Oh man, the Leroi Bros, bringing back lots of good memories.
  18. Posted a song in the Obscure bands thread that reminded me of Dave Edmunds, which got me thinking about Rockpile. A supergroup before there was a name - Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Billy Bremner, Terry Williams. Let's hear some of your favorite bashers! Another album I had and lost, MaxHorn posted it on his old blog a while back, glad to get another copy of it. Credited to Dave Edmunds, but as you can see in the video, it's Rockpile: Again, Rockpile masquerading as a Nick Lowe solo effort (Kind of like Rod Stewart with the Faces):
  19. Hot damn, that's awesome, thanks for that! Love that roadhouse rock-n-roll. Reminds me of a guy that came out in the early 90's, Webb Wilder. One of those journeyman rockers who got a little airplay then disappeared. This is the only song of his I ever remember hearing on the radio, but I still dig it, just rocks. Kind of Georgia Satellites meets Dave Edmunds.
  20. It took me forever to get around to really enjoying the "noodling stuff", but now I'm fascinated with it. I was going to post this a while back, this is the first ever recording of "Interstellar Overdrive", recorded on 10/31/66. It was never released (until 2017 as a Record Store Day exclusive) but was given to a friend of theirs, a film maker named Anthony Stern by their manager, to do with it as he pleased. Stern had said he wanted to make a film equivalent to the Floyd's live shows, or how he personally experienced their music back in the early days. First up is the studio track, this is straight up punk, recorded just a few months after Revolver came out and before Sgt. Pepper, the very dawn of psychadelic rock, they really had no influences for this kind of stuff, definitely ground-breaking: And this is the film Anthony Stern made using the audio as a soundtrack, despite people saying the track had never been heard before, it's been on youtube for years, people just never put 2 and 2 together... don't watch this if you're prone to seizures!
  21. Yeah! Recently transferred my complete cassette collection over to digital, this one I had to burn to CD to keep in the car, great album.
  22. I never had this one except on a cassette I taped off of KPFT in Houston late one night. Took me forever to find it, eventually tracked down a CD re-issue of their first two albums, classic early 80's Los Angeles quirky pop.
  23. He is, but still never got much play in the US, a little on college/community stations, but never enough. This could also be a college/indie rock thread, Sparks is fairly well known but still never got more than underground love... Had this album many years ago, got ruined in a flood...
