  1. “Pay me or I’ll keep publishing shameful information about you” is literally the definition of extortion. I don’t know why this is hard to understand.
  2. I would guess the “study” excluded gun homicides from those states plus DC but then divided by the national population.
  3. Any tips on getting rid of this shit? It grows to this height in about a week. I’ve managed to kill it with one of those weed (but not grass) killers that hooks into the garden hose a few different times but it only stays dead for like 4-6 weeks before coming back.
  4. It’s nice to hear a Republican publicly acknowledge that “family values” is code for bringing the Klan back to its former glory.
  5. An octogenarian aggy threatened to “stab me with a knife” at Kyle Field while I was singing The Eyes after the 2001 game. The specificity of this threat was a little disconcerting.
  6. The mugshot websites aren’t offering to scrub your mugshot from the rest of the internet for a fee. They’re only agreeing to discontinue their own publication of it. If their standard fee simply covered the costs of removal rather than being a profit engine, it would probably be different.
  7. Texas does have a child firearm access law (Penal Code 46.13) but it defines child as “under 17” and even if the child kills someone, it’s only a Class A misdemeanor.
  8. Why would something that can kill dozens of people in minutes not scare the shit out of you?
  9. I’ll still go to County Line on the Hill just for the view and that wheat bread.
  10. Extortion is basically obtaining money by threat of violence, financial harm, adverse governmental action, or harm to reputation. You have a right to publicize that I was arrested. But it’s extortion to say “I’m going to publicize that you were arrested unless you give me $1000.”
  11. Cast Away is a good call. Zoolander is what first came to mind for me.
  12. I agree that rules should require a supermajority to amend or suspend. Otherwise they’re rules in name only.
  13. One’s state being so profoundly racist they won’t issue you a birth certificate doesn’t make a person incompetent.
  14. A system where foreign governments can’t alter voter registrations seems like it should be a priority at this point.
  15. I think it’s more likely he would say “I don’t care what he did, I still far prefer his Presidency to what Clinton’s would have been.” To his “credit”, Tahoe owns that nothing matters more than his political agenda prevailing. It could come out that Trump and the Russians coordinated to hack voter registrations and delete enough Democrats from the voting rolls to swing the election and Tahoe would support that as worth it to win the election.
  16. I reject the premise that it’s possible to go below the belt with someone who sexually harassed his employee or who obstructed justice at the highest level.
  17. Yes, Congress could still just criminalize sports gambling nationally and Nevada could be excepted.
  18. It will still violate UIGEA for books to accept bets from states where it is illegal but they could ip block by state if they wanted to.
  19. There’s no reason it has to look similar to PASPA. Congress can just pass a law that says, “It is illegal to place or receive a bet on any sporting event. This prohibition does not apply in any state where gambling was authorized by state law on or before December 31, 2011.” That would be perfectly fine under this ruling and would prohibit sports gambling everywhere but Nevada.
  20. This decision just requires them to do it directly rather than ordering states to do it.
  21. Adelson only has one US casino outside Nevada (in Pennsylvania) so it’ll be interesting to see if he calls in his chits and gets Congress and Trump to fix the law to ban it everywhere but Nevada.
  22. Opinion is here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/17pdf/16-476_dbfi.pdf
  23. 7-2 decision with Ginsburg and Sotomayor dissenting (6-3 in parts but mostly 7-2). Holding is basically that the federal government can prohibit sports gambling if they’re so inclined but they can’t direct states to do so.

Damn I hope that wasn’t the last episode but it’s been fun even if it was.
