  1. Something to think about when looking at Mel Tucker. Raiding the portal and getting some quick wins is very different than building a program.

Michigan State has been brought up multiple times.

Honestly, they haven’t done much to earn the pub. They beat an overrated Michigan at home while giving up 550 yards. They did handle a mediocre Miami team.

They’ve played the 4 worst teams in the Big 10. They’ve given up 500+ yards to Western Kentucky, almost 600 to Purdue. 550 to Michigan. Were outgained by almost 200 yards versus Nebraska.

We’d likely have the same record as them if we switched schedules.

  2. It was 50 degrees in Pittsburgh when the game was over and this motherfucker is dressed like Nanook of the North

What wasn’t run back on this replay was the dude did some damn roundhouse kick after the sack prior to going to stare at the sideline. The ref did encourage the bump, but Marsh was awfully close for no real reason. Like it or not, it was likely the culmination of his efforts that got the flag.

And this photo along with his inability to stick on a roster might say a little something about the dude.
  3. Sark in his PC said Roschon... and couldn't really come up with another. Also implied it was maybe tougher given he's not even a #1 starter.
I think there are some guys that are trying to lead by example - Bijan, Worthy, Casey/Hudson, but that's not what's needed now to get the other guys going.

What does it say when you don’t give your team leader more opportunities? It being tougher is probably more accurate. At the same time, he could be more involved.

I’ve said it elsewhere but Bijan is not wearing down due to touches but possibly due to number of plays - blocking, route running. Roschon has proven capable of doing more.

  4. The defense has given up 16 points in the first half of the last three games combined. So bizarre how they just lose it at halftime. I really can't explain it.

So we’re playing Georgia level defense in the first half? I’m not going to do it, but I’m curious how far back you’d have to go for us to match or better that.

Then we’re Texas State level defense in the 2nd.

With all the talk about our lack of talent, I have a hard time agreeing with that statement based on the effort we’ve seen at times. It’s not like we are controlling the ball and clock either. The opposing offenses aren’t having a ton of penalties negating huge plays. We do lack a star on that side of the ball though. I’d say we actually rotate guys quite a bit so fatigue shouldn’t be that bad except we do like to go 3 and out.

Versus BU and OSU, the offense had golden opportunities to create more separation and failed to do so. The offense didn’t really show up at ISU.
  5. they didn't change jack shit, I'm not one of the guys coming up with all these make believe changes teams are making. Did you respond to the wrong person?

Overall, you are likely correct but didn’t they use a trick play for a 50 yard TD in the second half? Sometimes you need a perfectly timed play call.

And the Breece Hall TD run was a pretty great call. No idea whether they’d run that previously. It should have been stopped for 10 yards though.

After that, we were broken. That was more likely to happen easier after the last 3 games. The offense wasn’t doing Jack then the defense wilted.
  6. And you people keep saying we're behind in talent, but we had 7 drafted last year, OU 6, OSU 5 and the rest of the conference 16.
The idea that we don't have skill enough to compete in the Big 12 is just fiction.  We aren't Alabama, Ohio St. or Georgia.  So what?  At this point we're trying to win a conference title before getting to the playoffs.
And Alabama had SIX rushing yards vs. LSU on 26 carries with more talent than anybody in the country.  If you've watched them, they miss tackles and drop passes too.  Just not the entire 2nd half like Texas.

They ultimately lost to A&M in large part due to an uncontested dropped pass. It was low but very catchable. It would have been a first down to keep a late drive alive.
  7. I keep asking this and nobody answers.
If there's talent name the players and explain why they're talented based on play on the field. Don't just refer to a recruiting ranking.
I think you might be able to throw Cook, Collins and Ojomo in this group. Key word might.

Tough question. Are we talking inate ability or production.

Foster - Arkansas pick. Hit on USC receiver. 1 sack, 2 TFL against OU in 2018.

RoJo. 90% short yardage conversion rate this year. I made that up but it’s high.

Keilan. Over 7 yards per touch. Blocked punts.

    J Moore. 13 receiving TDs.

Jamison. Had a string of 300-400 plays without a TD pass given up. Several return TDs.

Josh Thompson. Pick 6 vs Tech. Tackling vs OSU and BU.

Kerstetter high ranking as a pass blocker.

People will shit themselves when he gets drafted. Him being Jones.

Whittington is a potential plus dude if we’d use him (when healthy).

I’m curious about Schooler based on his freshmen year at Oregon.

Now, who would you say has played better this year/ better than expected?

College is all about new faces stepping up from prior years. I can’t say Bijan is better. Better used yes. Worthy is new to campus. So that leaves me Cook and that’s not based on the past 3 games.

Now rattle off who you had expected more out of this year based on flashes in prior years and their athletic profile.
  8. Pretty much in agreement, except calling a QB sneak outrageously dumb. This seems more like it didn’t work, so it sucks type rationale. QB sneak is never a dumb call in short yardage. Literally no running play would have worked as Majors got his ass shoved back 2 yards on the play. The middle of your line gets blown up, you are generally fucked

Yeah, that was overly dramatic. But we would relieve some pressure up the middle if we would get on the edge on occasion with a play fake to Bijan. Getting under center pretty much guarantees those inside guys are trying to blow it up. Knowing our personnel, I’d probably never go Card under center for the sneak. But you’re right, it always has a chance.
  9. QB is the #1 issue with the offense. There is almost no play making ability out of the position. Nothing off schedule to speak of. Very few anticipatory throws. Part of this is due to touching the ball every play so plays made relative to plays made is too low.

Guys are open. A lot. And often wide open.

Two of the first 3 possessions were ended because we missed relatively easy throws. There’s the over throw to Worthy. Even if underthrown we can make it work. On the intentional grounding, that was the QB. 100%. Bijan and Brewer were both open with chances to convert.

Sark is trying, but he’s causing himself problems. The QB sneak was outrageously dumb. I’m not sure RoJo has been stopped in those situations. But no way in hell the defense won’t jump all over a play fake to Bijan there. That possession was killed due to the play call.

That’s 4 possessions killed and not because of the Oline or the WRs.

His perspective on no stationary targets doesn’t help either. Those can be easy and quick throws for QBs. We need both. Wiley is a massive target. That could have been significant. We are over relying on Bijan. Slightly. His pass blocking is lacking and quite frankly he’s been useless as a pass receiving outlet when not the primary target. RoJo could easily serve that function. Bijans touches aren’t creating wear and tear, but he’s playing too many plays, which probably are.

We’re not great anywhere, but were getting enough that if the QB is good and consistent we win two of the last 3 and give us a chance in the 3rd. That’s not to say that the other positions have not helped create some of the QB issues. But this is absolutely the #1 position that needs to step up.

  10. It’s important to point out how done Mack was in 2013.

Who gives a shit about his record or that he was playing for a title. It was about to crater.

In his final two games, we gave up 60 and scored 17. Seven of the points were on a crazy 10 play, 17 yard drive or something crazy like that. More interception return yards than passing yards. The offensive line had a shit ton of starts and all but Espinosa leaving. He was beginning to reach for recruits like Desmond Harrison. NFL guy you say. He had the maturity of a first grader and that’s why he washed out in record time. Our QB situation was not good. We had few playmakers on offense. Our RB was more ground it out than playmaker. The defense had good upper class talent, but there was limited depth. There wasn’t much depth anywhere.

    Mack was done here.

  11. The WR had 3 yards on everyone and the ball let the safety get involved. You are asking a back-up WR to make an above average catch, but you are Ok with an average throw. Like I said if either player makes an above average play it’s a completion. Casey had plenty of mistakes. The delay of game of a kickoff, followed by taking a bad sack with Bijan wide open in the flat. Failed to run on 3rd down multiple times for first downs. On on he chose to thread it to Moore for incompletion with Worthy wide open on the sideline and running room. Casey was didn’t lose this game with his play, but he did not win it either

And when you say Bijan was wide open in the flat, you really really meant it.

And what about the throw to a covered Brewer instead of Bijan. It was a nice throw though.

Then there was the throw to the sideline to a Double covered Worthy when someone was running down the middle wide open.

Bad throws and reads happen. Throwing out of bounds when all you have to do is keep it in bounds can’t happen. And I don’t understand why we never looked Bijans way. He probably could have had 100 yards receiving. Thompson possibly could have run for 75. He just wouldn’t take the easy stuff. We want Bijan running free in the secondary. Throwing it to him to make that happen is ok.

We really do lose as a team though.

  12. in full context he said coaching is 25% of the equation. Coaching can't ever make up for poor recruiting. If you can only have one, recruiting far outweighs coaching.  The reason Saban can roll coach after coach through Alabama is not because he's just so far better a coach than anyone else, it's because he's been a far better recruiter over the years than most everyone else.

I thought Saban was a far better coach than others but now I am questioning whether the liberties with which he and other SEC types take in recruiting is the difference.

What he and Smart are attempting to do is get a higher rated player at every position than you.

Well yeah if you can do that, you will beat your opponent most times. However most teams operate in the same arena talent-wise.
  13. Against OSU, the pick six completely changed the game and let OSU climb back in. If we go up 24-3, and Sanders has to throw the ball more, we probably win by two scores. That play was on Casey. We had a chance to score late in the third, when Casey threw a quick slant to Moore, but he couldn't hang on.
Against Baylor, Joshua Moore shaved about 17-21 points off of our potential production. The dropped TD, fumble, and inability to catch the ball that led to an INT prevented us from pinning Baylor down by three scores and forcing another shitty passer to throw more. It's been a while since I've seen an non-QB cost us the game that quickly. We need Whittington back, badly.
Casey has huge limitations, but the losses aren't all on him.

Not all on Casey. In spite of Moores errors, we still had chances. Casey’s big miss was the throw out of bounds to Worthy. Washington could have made some catches. Lots of missed opportunities. I do think Whittington could have made a difference.
  14. Why would he have known the ball isnt coming his way? Its an RPO and the CB is blitzing. He probably was giddy thinking he was going to get 20+ yards on the play. He had no shot to block the safety anyway, as he crashed on the run action.

At some point in the play, he knew the ball wasn’t coming his way but just kept going. There is no way of knowing at what point he knew that though. I acknowledged he wouldn’t have gotten the safety but had Bijan gotten outside it’s possible a block from him could have been critical. It just played out differently than what you typically see since no one even reacted to him. My initial reaction was maybe he was ticked and just kept going to prove some point rather than consider the play wasn’t over.

Anyway, y’all win. He’s probably just finishing his route.
  15. We barely got a push against Rice.
    .

    Go back and watch again.

Three 60+ yard runs. Only 1, maybe 2 guys had a legit chance to tackle our RBs on any of them. And the main attempt likely could have been a guy that we couldn’t account for. On Bijans run, Angilau absolutely obliterated his guy.

BU was selling out pretty hard to shut down Bijan. I think OSU did too. It’s a reasonably constant theme this year from opposing defenses. Don’t let Bijan beat you.

If we get better QB play, we win. But yeah if we get better WR play, we win. If the line plays better, we win. That’s what happens when you’re not great.

Specific to the QB position, we aren’t getting many off schedule plays. The pick 6 vs OSU was the play of the day. Versus BU, we couldn’t run but left tons of points on the board. That was part WR, part QB.

At this point, Card should get some series in each game. That was the plan for Casey. Should be the plan since now we’re just playing for a bowl.
  16. Moore clearly pointed out the blitzing CB, and he was running his route, the same route and concept he scored a TD on 20 minutes earlier.

Right, I didn’t mean Moore didn’t alert him but rather typically he’d have to be the one to identify.

I just would have thought on this play he would have known the ball is not coming his way and proceeded to make an effort to block. As it turned out, it would not have mattered. The corner not the safety cared what he was doing.
  17. If we'd gotten another yard, maybe?  In game, my assumption was, "we're running here, and if we get close, we're running again..."

No, you’re right. If we were a yard short, I bet he goes for it.

I wouldn’t expect the QB to see the blitz. Best chance would be Moore to alert him.

Just no idea what Moore is doing once he realizes it isn’t coming his way. No attempt to get the safety just looks like he’s going to block the goalpost. That very easily could have been a huge play.
  18. To be clear, BO&W doesn't even faintly speak for the rest of us here. I, personally, can't really figure out what a "youth movement" gets us at this point. I don't think Texas is loaded with talent, but it certainly has enough to win each of the games it lost this year.
Now, are some of our players "not good", yes. We have a problem at QB where both main candidates have major flaws. They're both JAGs, and that isn't helping the poor coaching. We have a weak WR room behind the first wave of guys. On defense, I don't even know what in the fuck to make of what kind of talent Texas has on that side because the coaching has been so thoroughly poor.

On this I’m with you. For the guys that I’d say are “not good” aren’t devoid of ability but it’s more consistency or wtf coaching. And the consistency ties in to coaching as well. On defense, like you said, it’s hard to know. Worthy, even though he’s doing great things, is a poor blocker.

Our talent has put us in position to be 7-1. Players and coaches share responsibility in not finishing the job. It’s not one coach or player or unit. Nobody is stepping up and making the difference. Somebody, anybody make a play when it counts. Generally you feel like the offense has carried the team but damn if they haven’t left a number of plays on the field or let go of momentum on multiple occasions.

I’d say Keilan and Roschon would be the two with legit gripes about opportunities but look who they’re behind. A little hard to argue Bijan plays too much. Otherwise, you’d have to drill down to freshmen like Coffey, and I’m not sure it’s wise to introduce him to Breece Hall with a 20 yard head start and a two way go.

Now really checking out of this thread as a poster with my long ass posts and no recruiting value.
  19. Maybe the play call is "Hand the ball off" because we're going for it on 4th down and we want yardage and to run the clock under 2 minutes if we have to give the ball back.

    We punted on 4th.

Looks to be crappy run by Bijan. He’s 1v1 with the corner but chooses not to take it. Not only that but it looks like he’s running inside the block to where the defender is being blocked.
  20. Huh. This is a new one for me.

Username checks out as a poster, but not as a UT fan. Weird.

I’ve stalked you bastards for years. Busted on the scene at some point last year after Herman did something to piss me off. Don’t even remember what it was now. I’ll stick up for own players but not above talking shit to posters. Not even above a good threat since it’s the internet.

Read a lot on the recruiting forum but don’t post cause I have no inside info, don’t do my own research, and realize that whatever value I have in my own mind ain’t worth much here.

Now, I’ll leave y’all to your discussion, but I’d prefer the “our players suck and don’t deserve to live much less play football” thread on the football board on its own thread so I may intentionally avoid it rather than in a useful one that warrants attention.

  21. Are we just going to ignore the fact that Coburn did a terrible job of trying to fight thru the block play side? I don’t think he’s stunting either. That’s how you get gashed. You can’t do that.

Brockermeyer undercut his too. But they both did a good job of continuing to play.

The BU center does a good job of not holding in my opinion. Certainly not anything I’d expect to be called. If he gets higher, under the neck, that’s different.

  22. I think Whitt is the worst after last game. Our OL isn't great but it wasn't good with Okafor playing, either. Our WR room is a fucking train wreck and it was somewhat passable with Whitt.

Whittington is a better player, and it’s very possible that we win the last two with him. At the same time, I’m not certain we fully utilized him except for Tech. Small sample size though.

The Oline did pretty well versus Tech and Rice. We’ve had many games versus lighter competition in the last 10, even 20, years that we didn’t blow out. I think only 1 QB pressure in those two games too. They were actually damn good I’d say.

Then Okafor gets hurt versus TCU. It was pretty early too. We then proceed to move pieces around. That was a bad move. Unless PFF is absolute trash, Kerstetter is plus + pass blocker at Tackle but not even close to that inside. So we basically downgraded at two Oline positions for the OU game. The pass blocking has been decent the last two weeks, probably better versus BU. OSU and Baylor both threw a lot of bodies at the LOS. Baylor simply was not going to let us run the ball consistently. If the passing game was on point, we likely win both those games. Maybe by two scores. Maybe by 3. It was not their issue we weren’t up 20-3 versus OSU or 28-10 versus BU. And, yes, I think we hold those leads since those offenses are not quick strike and have QB limitations.

The olines been through a lot in 3 years. 3 offenses and OCs. All of the original starters except Majors have changed positions/sides since last year. They aren’t the most talented bunch to begin with and continuity matters. Our backs and TEs are also responsible for some of the mishaps. I’d go with Okafor as the most significant injury.

Not many would believe it, but I’d say the Oline has fared better than the Dline. And by a decent margin. The first half versus Pig has messed with peoples perceptions of all games. There were several awful drives against OU too, but there many good plays. All those deep balls Worthy and Moore got were good pockets.
