  1. VIP Intel: A&M's loaded defensive back class becoming more clear Brian Perroni Texas A&M has a pair of defensive backs committed in Cibolo Steele national top-100 cornerback Jaylon Jones and Fort Washington (Md.) National Christian Academy four-star cornerback Joshuah Moten. Now, the Aggies need to add a few more prospects to that list. The good news is that the secondary class for 2020 is starting to become more clear and the Aggies should be happy with the results. The closest one to making a commitment is Shadow Creek four-star safety Xavion Alford. He says he wants to announce before his team's first game on Aug. 31, but it could come even sooner than that. In fact, don't rule out something happening this week. A four-team battle between A&M, Alabama, LSU and Texas is now a head-to-head with the Aggies and the Longhorns. A&M has been working behind the scenes really hard on this one and I fully expect him to choose the Aggies. He really likes what is going on in College Station and the future of the defense. Texas isThe definitely still after him hard, but the Aggies are poised to win this one. The other main safety A&M is after is Antonio Johnson from East St. Louis, Ill. He made a somewhat surprising commitment to Tennessee while at camp early in the summer. However, the Aggies are very high on him and remained in contact. After he spent the weekend in town for the recruiting pool party/barbecue late last month, he decommitted from the Vols immediately upon returning home. Johnson did not want to jump into another commitment incredibly quickly or else he could have potentially already been on the Aggie commitment list. However, he did not want to wait too long either. Though A&M would likely save a spot for him for a while, he knows spots in the class are at a premium and he is aware of Alford potentially committing to the Aggies. That could be the impetus for Johnson to jump on board as well, since there would only be the lone spot at safety left. The four-star is still talking to other schools but is expected to end up an Aggie and that could happen sooner rather than later. A&M needs another cornerback as well and it looks more and more like it will be Kansas City (Mo.) Raytown national top-100 prospect Dontae Manning. An early Oklahoma commit, Manning took an official visit to Aggieland in the middle of June, just before the dead period. He decommitted from the Sooners not too long after. Though he is still in communication with Oklahoma and in-state Missouri, among others, that Aggies are in good shape with him as well. Manning has said he plans to wait until Signing Day in February to announce but I would be a little surprised if that happened. The spots are at a premium with A&M and, though he too would likely be a guy that had a spot saved for some time, he does not want to get left out either. Jimbo Fisher and Co. also want to build momentum in the class and stealing a national top-100 defensive back from out of state would definitely do that. One player not on the list above is Aldine MacArthur four-star cornerback Joshua Eaton. He was scheduled to announce earlier this month and it was expected to be for the Aggies. However, he delayed things a bit. Whether the delay caused this or the other way around, there is not room for him anymore in the A&M class. Eaton is publicly down to A&M and Texas but he is expected to end up a Longhorn. He says he plans to announce in the near future. So, A&M is looking at a likely defensive back class of Jones, Manning and Moten at corner with Alford and Johnson at safety. If the numbers work out, the Aggies could still potentially look the junior college route at corner as well and they will have their eyes on a lot of guys this fall to see how they do
  2. 4-star S Alford down to two, decision coming soon. Brian Perroni HOUSTON - Shadow Creek four-star safety Xavion Alford is one of the top uncommitted prospects in the state of Texas for the class of 2020. The 6-foot-0.5, 188-pound defender saw a ton of offers pour in during the spring. In fact, he now holds them from 43 different schools. With many of his peers coming off the board by making commitments, Alford says it will not be too much longer before he does so as well. "Before my first game," Alford said of a commitment date. "I don't know when. It could be the day before. It could be earlier, but I'm going to announce sometime before the season." Shadow Creek begins its season on Sat., Aug. 31 and the nation's No. 145 overall prospect has a plan for how he will make his announcement prior to that date. "I'm going to do it with a video," he said. Alford had previously listed Alabama, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M as his final four schools. However, it is now an in-state battle between the Aggies and Longhorns. "Right now, the main two are Texas and Texas A&M," he said. "It had been a final four, but now I'm just down to those two." Alford says there is a lot to like about Texas A&M. "Coach Elko, coach Ish (Aristide), coach Jimbo - they're all doing a great job of recruiting me," he said. "The program is definitely going up, too. Jimbo got there last year and basically had a 10-win season. The defense, coach Elko turned that around too. They should be going up even farther this season." A current player in sophomore safety Leon O'Neal Jr. has also had an impact on Alford. "Leon, of course. He's the biggest spokesperson up there for A&M," Alford said. "I've known him before this, so it really means a lot when he's really wanting me up there, playing back there with him." Texas has its pros with Alford as well. "Texas is definitely going up, too," he said. "Both of the in-state programs are going up. They're both having winning seasons. It's going to be a fun college season to watch. I like the defense at Texas; it's similar to what we run at our school." With a decision not far off at all, Alford says he knows where it will likely be. "I think I have a clue. Yeah I think I've got a clue where it's going to be," he said. Alford helped first-year varsity program Shadow Creek to a 15-1 record and a state championship game appearance as a junior. He finished with 61 tackles, six interceptions and 20 tackles for loss. The last four Crystal Ball predictions for him have all been in favor of the Aggies

  4. Hamm lite. aggy getting everybody Who's Next: Looking at the most likely players to commit to A&M VIP ByBRIAN PERRONI 96 minutes ago This summer has been a busy one on the recruiting trail for Texas A&M. Since the beginning of June, the Aggies have added 11 new commitments in the class of 2020 and two in the class of 2021. With the coaches now almost fully focused on fall camp as well as the upcoming season, things are bound to slow down a bit. However, that does not mean the momentum will stop in the recruiting department. Heading into the summer, only a pair of in-state prospects in the class of 2021 had made pledges anywhere. However, that number has gone up quite a bit. Both of A&M’s commitments have come in that time and the Aggies could be in line for a few others. So, who in the 2020 and 2021 classes could be the next commit or commits for Texas A&M? There are a few players that are possibilities. ALDINE MACARTHUR CB JOSHUA EATON The 6-foot-2, 175-pound four-star cornerback from Houston had long planned to announce his decision this coming Tuesday. It seemed very likely that Texas A&M would be his choice. However, Joshua Eaton recently took an unofficial visit to Texas and decided to push back his decision a bit. He had originally said he would shut things down after a commitment, including no more official visits. However, now he wants to take a few visits. He has one scheduled to A&M for the Alabama game weekend. It’s still not out of the question that Eaton decides to make an announcement on Tuesday. If so, that would bode well for the Aggies. But, even if not, A&M has put in a lot of work with him. MIAMI (FLA.) GULLIVER PREP DE DONELL HARRIS The 6-foot-4, 210-pound defender was originally a class of 2021 prospect before reclassifying to 2020 this summer. Texas A&M was in his top five and he spent the weekend in Aggieland last month. The reclassification could be the best thing for A&M in this recruitment. With the late change, many of his top five teams had already filled up or had the scholarships at the position earmarked for the class of 2020 already. Even though A&M would likely be the leader anyway, that certainly is not a bad development for the Maroon and White. There have been several Crystal Ball predictions for him to A&M recently. Donell Harris says he wants to take his official visits, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him shut things down at any point. FOLSOM (CALIF.) RB DANIYEL NGATA The nation’s No. 51 overall prospect and the No. 2 all-purpose back, Daniyel Ngata took an official visit to A&M in June. It is the only official he has taken so far and he says he wants to decide by the end of the summer. If he sticks to that timeline, things look good for the Aggies. Ngata is also high on a few other schools and Utah could be the program to watch as the main competition for A&M. However, the Aggies are still in very good shape. A&M is going to have to figure out its running back board with how many and which running backs are takes, but Ngata could end up in the class before too long. MEMPHIS (TENN) CENTRAL OT CHRIS MORRIS Things are looking very up for A&M’s chances with the national top-100 prospect. Chris Morris has been to Aggieland numerous times the past couple years, including spending a weekend in town last month. Tennessee hosted him on an official visit this summer but Morris is still very high on A&M. He has an official set up to Aggieland for the Alabama game. Morris has long said he wants to commit while on an official visit, so the Oct. 12 weekend could be that chance, but it also would not be a shock at all to see him commit prior to then. EAST ST. LOUIS (ILL.) S ANTONIO JOHNSON The four-star safety from Illinois has long been a top target of the Aggies, but he surprised a lot of people by committing to Tennessee, along with a teammate, while at camp over the summer. A&M continued to recruit him, though, and after a weekend unofficial visit last month, he decommitted from the Vols upon returning home. Though he is a bit wary of rushing into another commitment right after opening his recruitment up, the Aggies are in very good shape with Antonio Johnson. There are several Crystal Ball picks in favor of A&M for good reason and a commitment in the not-too-distant future would not be surprising. 2021 DENTON GUYER KJ Liggins, who played at Coppell before transferring to Guyer this summer, is now playing with A&M four-star quarterback commit Eli Stowers. The Aggies were one of his first offers and the four-star prospect is very high on A&M. The big question mark surrounds an injury that made Liggins miss almost his entire sophomore season. A&M may want to see him back in action at full speed on a Friday night before making the final call. If they decide to press, though, there is a good chance he ends up with his teammate Stowers on the 20201 Aggie commitment list. 2021 NORTH SHORE QB DEMATRIUS DAVIS A&M already has one quarterback committed in the class in Stowers but, should the Aggies decide to take a second, Dematrius Davis is pretty much the only one left they would take. He and Stowers have both said they would be okay with being in the same class together. Davis’ best friend and teammate, four-star wide receiver Shadrach Banks, committed to A&M last week and that will help in the Aggies’ recruitment of the quarterback. Davis plans to take a little bit of time to make a decision, but it likely isn’t that far off. He is also very high on both Florida State and Nebraska, but it looks like a very strong possibility he ends up in Maroon and White. Others to watch: Fort Bend Marshall WR Devon Achane, Athens OT Garrett Hayes, Kansas City (Mo.) Raytown CB Dontae Manning, Shadow Creek S Xavion Alford, North Shore LB Matthew Roberts, 2021 Houston Episcopal OT Donovan Jackson, 2021 Fort Collins (Colo.) Fossil Ridge OT Trey Zuhn, 2021 Katy Taylor OG Bryce Foster, 2021 North Shore OG Jaeden Roberts, 2021 Texarkana Pleasant Grove DE Landon Jackson, 2021 Texarkana Pleasant Grove DE Marcus Burris, 2021 Loganville (Ga.) Grayson DE Noah Collins, 2021 Miami (Fla.) Northwestern LB Terrence Lewis, 2021 Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood LB Junior Colson
