  1. If you keep the car will the VIN then be listed as salvage? I had a situation years back where a truck was damaged, declared a loss, and I considered buying it back and doing the repairs privately. I thought the truck was repairable, and the insurance company said it reached a level where they wouldn't or couldn't pay for repairs - thus declaring it a total loss. What stopped me from doing this was the hassle of insuring the truck after it was tagged as salvage. I had a buddy who owns a big body shop and he warned me that securing decent insurance would be a hassle and expensive. After digging into it further, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze for me so I punted. That said, this had mechanical damage and not cosmetic, so you wouldn't have the risk I had of unknown or unexpected additional repair costs if you were fine driving it with cosmetic flaws.
  2. Was thinking about this during my morning walk as I drifted into catastrophizing over something ridiculous - when all other evidence points to the contrary. If I start spinning in my mind (ahem - when I start spinning....that's my disease default) I don't have to stay there. How sick do I want to be? How long am I willing to bathe in it? I have a choice to take some action, push back on those thoughts, and remember my default perception is normally the wrong one - especially if it leads me into obsessive thinking. I can be as free as I allow myself to be. I can't think of the last time I "obsessed" over something that was healthy for me. But, being stopped by a train can lead me to decide that my wife is leaving me for someone else, my kids hate me, and my next plane trip will crash on takeoff. That'll never change...it gets better but I'll still go there from time to time. I can't prevent those thoughts from coming up, but I don't have to wallow in them. Just as you said, my job is to call them out for what they are - thoughts aren't reality and feelings aren't fact. Thanks for reminding me of that. I needed that today.
  3. In a blind or on my shoulder, a rifle stays on safe with a round in the chamber. If I'm driving, and the rifle is stored away, it is unloaded. If I'm driving and it's beside me for quick access, I'll tip up the bolt on a bolt action rifle, or open the bolt on an AR. If I need to grab it for a quick shot on a coyote or hog, I tap down the bolt or hit the bolt release on a AR which chambers a round. I do that when driving to prevent a safety from being bumped into fire position by knocking around. Normally I slide a rifle between the console and the passenger's seat or my seat to hold it snug, and there can be contact with the safety so keeping the bolt open is a fail safe in that vulnerable position.
  4. This is really cool.....would love to have one. Not quite, but up there with a Korth. Beretta made big news Wednesday, formally announcing a new brand under its umbrella of companies. Beretta will begin importing Manurhin revolvers into the U.S. for commercial sale. The line officially launches this week at the 2021 USPSA LOCAP Nationals in Talladega, Ala. This is a huge win for U.S. consumers. The Manurhin comes from French manufacturer Chapuis Armes. The company has produced the revolver for 20 years, serving everything from target shooters to law enforcement use. Now the Manurhin MR73 series of revolvers hits the U.S. Chapuis Armes developed the variant specifically for the French Gendarmerie and special service units of the French Police and Military. The accurate, reliable pistols passed testing of tens of thousands of full-power .357 Mag ammo, Beretta said.
  5. Yeah - that's a true rare genetic defect - these "stags" have dicks and ball sacks, just undeveloped or underdeveloped nuts and varying degrees of testosterone depending on how much of a toxic load they ingest. No interest in mating, no aggression, and they get FAT like a steer. Heaviest "bucks" we've ever shot have this condition. Frequency of occurrences depends on this plant's proliferation from year to year and if the yearling bucks have access to it and like to eat it. Fredericksburg up through Mason are the areas most affected and varies by terrain within that region.
  6. Mentioned up-thread that we get a lot of what some call velvet bucks, cactus bucks, or other homophobic terms. Bucks don't develop balls, have little to no testosterone, don't breed, nor do they have the same antler cycle that a normal buck will. In our area its caused by a toxic plant growing in granite outcroppings that sterilizes younger bucks - most often permanently. Here is a cool example of their horn cycle. Buck below stayed in velvet all fall and winter, never dropped, but instead, in Feb., his horns started to rot away from the tips backward. Doesn't have enough testosterone to harden them and they just finally deteriorate. He's crossed the point where the decay has stopped and the regrowth has begun. He was a fairly typical (velvet notwithstanding) 8 last year about 15" wide with 7-8" G2's. Withered away to basically short main beams and a brow tine. Now he's growing again. Will repeat over and over unless we shoot the steer. Antlers get more and more distorted and atypical through each cycle.
  7. Ammunition and sports trading cards, according to my most recent Uber driver.
  8. She was entitled enough to believe she and her clan alone spoke for the majority of citizens....who instead value democracy and legitimate governments run by rule of law. Therefore she was “entitled” to the bullet she earned. I’m sorry for her family’s loss, but she tried to overthrow our government. Dont sue. Help form a foundation to expose radicals who indoctrinated her and educate others on how a democracy works. Make something good come from her stupid, self-absorbed death instead of blaming others to reap an underserved windfall.
  9. Correct- if your current 401(k) has decent fees and investment options, and will allow a roll-in that’s the play.
  10. Whatever you do- tell the gut level truth and don’t mince words. They can only work with the clay you put in the wheel. We are all broken people in a broken world and they know it. Allow them the chance to do the job for which you are paying. Signed- wasted $1000s trying to impress professionals and “win” therapy.
  11. Our society took a labor force already prone to abuse of power and over the last 20 years has outfitted them with military gear and weapons. What did we think would happen?
  12. Such a sweet, family man- always looking out for others.
  13. Any fishing recommendations for someone staying at Atlantis. DIL is trying to surprise son with a 1/2 day trip later this summer. I told her I'd be somewhat leary of using the Atlantis concierge to book it and she should consider a private booking. Any thoughts?
  14. Lovongo is a cool place to go eat and hang out on the beach. Still a work in progress as far as the "resort" is concerned, but the food is great and it's an interesting set-up. https://www.lovangovi.com/
  15. Congrats- that’s beautiful country. Enjoy!!
  16. That's heartbreaking. No doubt not just friends like yourself, but probably parents, kids, spouse(s) ex or otherwise being left to grieve and wonder why/how it could get to that. This makes me sick to my stomach. I'm so sorry.
  17. Anyone heard of aoudad die-offs in the freeze? I may have asked before, but don't recall. Our aoudad near F'burg have been conspicuously absent from cameras since the cold hit. I would have assumed if any animal could withstand the cold, it would be those bastards, but I'm beginning to have my doubts. Only seen a few rams and no ewes since Feb. in places where we normally see herds on the regular.
  18. No glass. No pics. They had the rifle with an original ask of $1800, but it appeared it had been marked down from there. I couldn't tell that it had ever been used and the action alone sells for 70% of that. MSRP on new production complete rifles shows to be around $3500 based on what I could gather, but I don't know who did what to that specific one. May not be a lot of demand for a long range thumper in Hoover, AL.
  19. I was today's year old when I learned about Nesika Firearms and Actions. Stumbled across a complete gun on the used rack chambered in .300 Win Mag with a very nice composite stock. Rifle appeared LNIB and was well balanced. That action is a beast. I don't recall ever hearing about this outfit from Sturgis, but they appear to make some qualify stuff. After getting home I think either the shop doesn't know what they have, or they've had it a while and want to get rid of it. Anyone have one? Anyone want one? Nesika Firearms
  20. My wife loves adding me into conversations mid stream- conversations she’s been having in her head..... a long drive exposes this to a maddening level. Narrator- During a pleasantly silent part of a long drive.... Her: What were those two guys like? Me: What are you talking about? Her: I’m curious what they were like? Me: Again what are you talking about? Her: Sighing.... I was talking about the guys who came to the house to pick up stuff from the garage? Me: Ok, but we weren’t talking about that and it was 3 weeks ago. Rinse and repeat after every period of silence.
  21. Excellent point!! When we had three networks and over the air broadcast news, ratings were important but were not the driver they are today. The advent of cable and the 24/7 news cycle created entertainment companies that provide news to generate ratings / revenue. Every one of them is seeking to elicit an emotional response to capture our attention for longer than they otherwise could. The horse is out of the barn and it’s up to the consumer to decide if they’ll take the bait.
  22. Fastest way to locate Rios this time of year is to roll your windows down, open then slam shut your truck door. If he’s in the area a Tom will respond and you can start hunting him there.
  23. If "Storage Wars" can make as much money as that show does, a show about the "Ammo Wars" would be a hit. Following these cornballs around and showing them try and resell would be great. "Big Jessie scored big with his (2) 200 round packs of American Eagle 5.56 he then sold in the parking lot. His profit of $27 comes out to a whopping $0.39 per hour of work he spent chasing ammo this week." "Joe-Willy didn't fare quite so well, He spent $120 on 2 boxes of ammo he'd pre-sold on TXGuntrader.com, but he bought .300 Win Mag instead of .300 Weatherby Mag and now he has Karen from Vidor mighty pissed off because she already Venmo'd the money and it was an anniversary present for her husband/uncle."
  24. It came to the mainland from the USVI so I gave them a pass on the labeling and am glad I did.
  25. Unless its a less common variation, that's not a bad deal for either party. It would cost him more new considering taxes, shipping, FFL etc. and you wouldn't be leaving anything on the table. You probably have that or less in it I'd guess.
