I am quite impressed that her father was still sending live rounds down range at the age of 83.

Well, those are certainly unexpected payroll numbers.

Hornady has dropped the 6mm ARC cartridge on the public. Seems to double as an interesting long range target performer along with a medium sized game pill. It's intriguing. All of these new rounds have some degree of an answer seeking a problem (and most have been tried in various wildcat configs for some time before a major puts them to market). Notable features stays supersonic past 1000 yard. ~50% less recoil than a .308 75% more energy at 400 yards than a 5.56 Pushes up to a 108gr .243 projectile. Doesn't require an AR10 platform - works in the lighter AR15 - reduced weight in-spite of higher mag capacity (24) Some of the shooters on SnipersHide.com are saying its what the 6.5 Grendel should have been and that it's going to hit the .224 Val pretty hard if this is a cost competitive option. SAAMI spec for 224V lists a 90gr @ 2,700 fps.SAAMI spec for 6mmARC lists a 108gr @ 2,700 fps.Berger's classic 6mm 105gr Hybrid has a 0.536 BC.Berger’s new .224 85.5gr Hybrid has a 0.524 BC.Berger’s new 6mm 109gr Hybrid has a 0.568 BC.

Buckshot will penetrate walls much more than the average person believes. In some cases more than a defensive handgun or even rifle bullet at higher velocities. No dog in this fight....I've got handguns, rifles, and shotguns that can all be accessed quickly. I'm just pointing out that there are a lot of old wives tales regarding shotguns for self defense and most are false or at best misleading. As an example.....the idea that accuracy isn't needed b/c of pattern spread - check out the real pattern of buckshot at 20 feet vs. what some people assume it to be. Just things to consider. Whatever you get, become proficient with it. edit - you can even look up videos that show 2x buckshot penetrating much more than a 5.56 defensive round shot at very short range (ie - in a hallway). It has to do with velocity and stabilization. The 5..56 gets it's energy dumped more quickly and isn't as stable in flight that close to the muzzle so it doesn't penetrate the same as it would at extended ranges. Somewhat counter-intuitive but...science.

GW Fins has reopened and is taking reservations for dine in Wed-Sun. That may change and expand if they hit Phase II by July. I'm sure some of the other places have started to re-open for limited dine in as well, but that's the only one I'm sure of. Best to hit the google and look around.

How do I tell if I'm an alcoholic?
Reagan1k replied to TeddyBearStallion's topic in Can You Help Me With This?
I agree with the above. Based on my experience, the quizzes are something that probably came out of the treatment industry for a cookie cutter answer. For me, it boils down to some simple questions. When I have 1 or 2 drinks and try to stop or have to stop, do I feel anxious, unsatisfied, restless, or frustrated? When I resolve to not drink, do I more times than not “change my mind” and later drink when I had earlier resolved not to drink? Am I arranging my life, work, social engagements so that I can drink the way I want and how much I want? Am I hiding the amount I drink from others or sneaking drinks on the side? Whether you are a daily drinker or a periodic drinker, if these things are present in your life then you probably have the physical craving and mental obsession that are symptoms of alcoholism. I’m an alcoholic. If I am controlling my drinking, I’m not enjoying it and if I’m enjoying my drinking I’m not controlling it. These are questions you have to answer for yourself. -
No disagreement there but I'm mostly thinking of it in the context of a profession and not of institutional cover-ups (Hi Baylor and PSU!). Rouge doctors get outed by their own and you don't see them courting public opinion with bumper sticker campaigns for example. People bash lawyers all the time, but they don't rise up en masse to support one of their own in the face of obvious criminal or unethical behavior. Maybe the analogy is correct in that the LEO profession acts more like an institution than a trade group.....call out one and you are perceived to be against them all.
-
I've often thought that this "blind eye / cover-up" mentality appears to be unique among the LEO profession for some reason. I can't think of any other profession where the good apples so aggressively cover for the bad apples. Normally any organization is pretty quick to distance themselves from those who bring problems to the professional image. I may be missing a group or two but they don't come to mind. Other professional groups turn pretty quickly on the bad actors to preserve their own image and career image / livelihood.

But you still haven't seen the bill. That took 15 minutes of planning to get ready to work on that, 30 minutes to get ready to work that, and 30 minutes to wrap up the file on top of the hour's work that sentence took.
-
Technically you are correct but under the current system and with backlogs at every pinch point in the process, getting hourly service-industry employees back to work for you (or new workers from businesses that went under) and off of unemployment isn't easy. I'm not blaming the workers either. Were I living in their shoes I might not be so eager to go back so I'm not judging. Conceptually it should be a piece of cake and in normal times the spigot is quick to be cut off in cases of abuse, but times are different. It's at least a challenge if not worse for some of these companies and the PPP forgiveness time clock is not working in their favor. Workers also have the out of saying "I don't feel safe" or "I can't get childcare" - often truthfully and that's a hard nut to crack for both the business and the unemployment office. It's a spinning wheel of unintended consequences for sure.
-
That's a huge deal. A lot of businesses can't rehire anyone now b/c the laid off will take a paycut going back to work as long as the federal $600/week kicker is in place on top of normal unemployment. Univ. of Chicago study claimed 68% of workers are making more than they were while employed. I know a couple of outfits that can't get their old workers back, especially in the service industries that are cranking back up. It's not a political statement, just human nature and math. Give the businesses time to rehire or spend the money on more fixed costs and still have the PPP forgiven when the workers are willing to come back. Only seems fair. Otherwise the unemployment benefits undermine the intent of the PPP.

Fast forward 24 months and my buddy is now almost non-communicative and his physical health is failing- at 50 years old. His next move will be to a memory care unit with round the clock attention. His wife is no longer able to manage him and care for their kids even though he goes to a daily care facility 3-4 days a week. Just awful...

The progressiveness for me was more along the lines of how I "managed" the disease. I have come to believe that I was born this way as opposed to drinking my way into some dependence. I also think that can happen but once it does, the progression then is probably the same with regard to the physical cravings and mental obsession. My evidence for this is that after some period of sobriety and reflection, I can identify that I always had the craving. From drink one at an early age, I was never satisfied with one drink even when I could use better judgement and stop. I was always unsatisfied. That's what I have come to understand as the allergy manifesting a physical craving. Even in high school and college, I can recall often wondering things like "How can bars operate if they know that everyone who drives there will leave and be guilty of drunken driving." It never occurred to me that one could drink and not get drunk. Later when of age, I didn't understand the concept of a Bloody Mary for brunch and not drinking the rest of the day. When I was forced to do that, it started as an uncomfortable feeling and in later years progressed into a monumental feat of willpower that eventually was too much. When I did practice moderate, social or "normie" drinking, it was a chore and not enjoyable at some core, primal level. I was functional, and could drink socially, but always had to finish the job at some point in the day or night. That's when the lying and sneaking part comes in. As the disease progressed, I had less and less ability to control the amount I consumed and when I occasionally did control the amount, the dissatisfaction with it and the restlessness increased. Finally, I gave up any notion of controlling AND enjoying my drinking. Those two could not coexist. When I read the book and it talks about a hard drinker who given sufficient reason to stop or moderate can do so successfully and without wanting to blow their brains out, I picture someone who abuses alcohol, but is not prey to the allergy and mental obsession. They dry out, clean up, and move on without the bottle resting on their shoulder whispering - "we should be drinking" 24/7/365. Another way I try and explain it to normies (like my wife). They for whatever reason think I need a drink. What they really mean is that they want a drink - the choice is implied and real for them. They choose to take the action of drinking in moderation or to excess. When I was to think I need a drink, I really needed to drink (not by choice) in order satisfy the mental obsession preceding and then the physical craving that started following the 1st drink. That's rambling, but so be it. Just my experience.

The first and easiest thing you can do is get a copy of the “playbook” Coach Frank Broyles wrote for caregivers Most of your real struggle will be dealing with the denial and other issues presented by the spouse. It’s incredibly frustrating to seem them put their head in the sand but it’s a natural reaction for many. It may well take a 3rd party or expert to break through the barriers. Parents don’t want advice on finances, marriage, and sex from their own kid who’s butt they wiped as an infant. It’s hard but have some compassion for the spouse because their dreams of what the rest of their life would / should be are being smashed in front of their eyes daily and they feel overwhelmed even as they may act like nothing is wrong. See if you can get him to go with your wife to an Alzheimer’s support group- even under the guise of supporting your wife and not because he “needs” it. If they have a church family reach out to them and get them in the loop. Look for a local association and investigate their caregiver respite programs - basically like a Mother’s Day Out for a couple hours 1-2 days a week where the patient gets dropped off and the caregiver gets some free time. From there you’ll also get resources for in home sitters and other programs. You’ll get frustrated and overwhelmed but keep your focus on supporting the non-Alzheimer’s spouse as that’s who you can really help and need to help as their health- both physical and mental is paramount. If they crater under the stress, the whole things goes to shit as you now have two for whom you must provide care.

I don’t ask what about her shoes and she doesn’t ask about my guns. Blissful ignorance can be a good thing for all parties.

No experience with the .458 SOCOM or the newer HAM’R but I do have a little Ruger American in .450 Bushmaster topped with a 1x6 and it’s a cool little gun. Round performs well and is easy to shoot. Ammo becoming more available. Loud AF but good on the recoil side. Handy little truck gun, deer gun in thick east Texas type cover, or hog buster.

Man - a left handed prepper selling a right handed rifle. What happens if he hurts his left hand in the apocalypse? Good news for you - Poor planning on his part. Maybe just pay him in toilet paper if you have a few extra rolls. Sounds about even to me.

So.....have we come to the conclusion / concensus that @Pato del Muerto really has only one choice? If he doesn't get a Genwerks Verdict in 300RPC with a Kahles K525i MOAK and lazer etched turret he'll probably never kill anything. Pretty simple choice. Then, all he has to do is periodically loan it out to all the "helpers" he's had on Surly as a thank you. Seems not only reasonable but the prudent/responsible thing to do.....putting food on the table for his family in these uncertain times.

To the point above, in this instance, the most effective / lethal round is the one you can shoot accurately. Put either one in the right spot and it'll work. We aren't comparing rimfire .22's to a .30 caliber magnum round here. Neither is a bad choice. Choose what you can and will become proficient with.
-
2nd vote for Ruger In this case. Lot of gun for the money. One idea would be to look at the Blackhawk Convertibles. You can run both 45LC and 45 auto or .357 and 9mm for instance with a simple cylinder swap. Even 10mm / 40S&W. Guns come with both cylinders. Give you an option to shoot lower cost pills when you want to run it a lot or a more traditional longer cased handgun round when you want it. Several options and you can get them in various configurations including a birds head grip if that floats your boat.
-
Spot on. I’ve seen the effects of a 20 yard shot from a 5.56 SBR vs. the same placement in shots 10x longer out of 5.56 carbine or rifle length barrels on TX sized whitetail and there is no comparison.

For range shooting, self defense, walking around on a ranch?? What’s your pleasure?

That GamePro Gen2 is pretty intriguing....with a threaded barrel that gives you a reason to get a can for it. Anytime you can create a reason to justify a new suppressor or especially your first one that’s a slam dunk. edit- and there is nothing wrong with N.S. Optics on a rifle like that. It’ll serve you well for the intended purpose.
