  1. Stinky tofu is yummy though, once you get past the smell.

    Getting old sucks

Had my blood drawn last Friday. The nurse told me to rub it so it won’t bruise - which I did, but didn’t work. I’ve had a dark bruise on my arm which hasn’t gone away… maybe because my platelet count is really low.
  3. And yes, hit up Din Tai Fung for the soup dumplings. They are really good. There are DTF restaurants in SoCal so I’ve had my share. But if you don’t know what a soup dumplings (xiao long bao) are, you need to give them a try. They are very tasty.
  4. I took the family to Taiwan for the kids’ spring break. The weather this time of year is great. In general, Taiwanese people are friendly and a good portion of them can speak enough English to be helpful. Public transportation is the way to go - the subway system is awesome, the busses not so much, but you can take them to places the subway won’t reach. Get a transit card while you’re there, you can use it for subways, busses, and some stores will take it as a form of payment. Credit cards are generally accepted, but some places only take cash. Food and groceries are generally CHEAP! We ate like kings for probably 1/3 to 1/2 of what you’d pay in the US. We had combo meals with entree, soup, veggies, etc. for $5. Breakfast for 4 for less than $8. The architecture is something… some designs are WTF, some have great designs, but ruined by people installing bars on their balconies, different kinds of A/C units, and dirty because they don’t clean the facades. My parents live in Tamsui. I don’t think it’s all that, but I went on a weekday, so maybe not all the vendors / entertainers were out. It’s along the Tamsui river and has a great sunset. It’s the last stop on the red line. We went to Shihlin night market for nostalgic reasons. There are hole-in-the-wall restaurants, food stalls and food carts that had tasty street food. Also good shopping with cheap clothing, gifts and other baubles. We also went Jiufen. It’s similar to the Nishiki Market in Kyoto with a narrow pedestrian street and lots of restaurants, food vendors, shops, etc. Lots of international tourists. If you have time, the ladies can rent traditional Qipao to take photos at the market and some famous tea houses. My wife and daughter rented the dresses to do a mommy daughter photo shoot. I’d also hit the Taipe XIngyi district. It’s the financial hub with great shopping. The Taipei 101 tower is there. You can go up to the 86th floor coffee / lunch spot as long as you spend 300 NTD per adult which comes to <$10. There is GREAT shopping on the lower levels if you have $$$. Lots of very high end watch, clothing and jewelry stores. There’s also a food court at the bottom level which has great options for not much money. Enjoy your trip in Taiwan. If you have any questions, I’m sure Sam Lin, YChang and I would be willing to help.
  5. He's ain't got that loving feeling.
  6. Somalis were called "skinnies" in Black Hawk Down. Americans in general are overweight. By becoming Somalia, our population can slim down and we can say goodbye to Ozempic. /silverlining
  7. I got mad at my daughter for not contributing around the house, so I gave her the task of loading the dishwasher every night. She complained about not knowing how to load the dishwasher, at which point I yelled at her saying "Figure it out! Your not stupid! If you still don't know, ask mommy, she'll teach you how to do it!
  8. NGL. I’m totally in love with that Texas Tech girl. Has anyone doxxed her? Because I need her address to uhhh… send flowers. Also. The title is this thread is “Quite possibly the dumbest thing ive seen” You’re missing the word “yet” at the end of the sentence.
  9. Wait a second. You said yoga shorts. I just googled yoga shorts and yeah… I’ll be in my bunk.
  10. Captured the essence, but Luanne needs the correct chola brows.
  11. Go back in time before electricity and fire, and go over after sunset.
  12. On one hand, I'm glad I still have my Taiwanese citizenship, so I can say with 50% conviction that I am fucking embarrassed of my US citizenship. OTOH, the Taiwanese passport won't matter if/when China invades the island. Fuck me.
  13. UN Resolution - International Day of Hope. Non-binding, kinda silly / waste of time vote, but still... here is the vote tally. In favor: 161 countries, including pariah states like North Korea, Venezuela, Iran, Myanmar... Absent: India, Paraguay, Peru, and Türkiye Against: The US of fucking A. Even the Third Reich would have voted in favor. https://internationaldayofhope.org/un-resolution/
  14. This administration... can only be characterized as incompetent, racist, imbeciles and bullies. Fuck them all.
  15. 1/3 of the way through Adolescence. The acting is really solid, especially the kid who plays Jamie. Stephen Graham (the dad) will always be Tommy to me.
  16. With me, it's not a problem.
  17. Followed a link to my FB page, and saw there are 10+ friend requests from Asian hotties. Their FB pages are all the same... a few pictures of flowers and cityscapes and shit. A few posed photos. That's it. Seriously, what are they hoping to accomplish with these?
  18. At my office happy hour last Friday, we had over 10 people and at least 8 different bottles of whisky / whiskey. The fanciest bottles so far were Eagle Rare and Macallan. Most people bring the $60 - $80 bottles, which can get you a decent bottle to share with coworkers.
  19. Opened a bottle of Uncle Nearest. Not bad, but not good either. It has the slightly metallic taste trust I associate with Makers Mark. Not as strong, but strong enough that I won’t buy it again.
  20. This. I like pumpkin pies, but just smelling pumpkin spice makes me want to leave the room.
  21. Any suggestions for a small mountain bike for my 10 YO kid? He currently has a Cannondale Trail 24", but he took out my wife's REI CO-OP Dirt 1.1 yesterday and had an absolute blast. His legs are muscular and he easily handled the weight of an adult bike. I'm looking for an intermediate bike for him, something to last him until he's 5'2 or so before I get him a full on 29" bike. I don't want to spend too much, but don't mind going up to $800 or so if he gets 2-3 years on it. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. FWIW, we're riding a dirt / gravel trail by my house. The first part is fairly flat with maybe a 50' rise over 3-miles. Then there's the 2nd half of the trail with moderate / steeper parts that go another 100 - 150' or so. I'm sure he'd love to go on the steeper slopes, because just the way he is.
  22. Going on a mountain bike ride with my son. He's 10 years old and not even 5 feet, but he took my wife's bike and rode it better than she ever could.
  23. This is why they’re cutting personnel at the IRS!
