  1. Actually, if ANY "financing" is involved with the project, it almost certainly IS following "Sharia law," because traditional interest-based lending is barred by Sharia law. Instead, Islamic finance mechanisms are used (these are quite common, and are offered by multiple institutions, including some right here in Austin -- again, they are common): The problem here is that there is absolutely nothing illegal about such arrangements. "Sharia law" -- the broad term -- is not illegal. The sole basis for these assholes to go after the transaction is based on religion. But, being that the 1st Amendment only applies to white, Christian males, making statements in support of/agreement with the regime, nothing fucking matters anymore.
  2. I mean.....drop $50 million in my lap, and I'm probably all "peace, OUT!" too.
  3. To be fair, I also know a little German.
  4. Yet....she didn't get burned at all. Word is that she cashed in $50 million on that deal. On a flagrant - yet maybe legal - scam....she made more money than I will make in my lifetime, by a large margin. This fucking timeline is fucking insane.
  5. To be fair, that applies to most of us at Texas-OU, so....yeah.
  6. I think it just lends itself to pump-and-dump by its very nature. Insiders get special access and ability to unload at high prices tied to....nothing (which is literally the crypto model). Insiders get to sell magical 1s and 0s at a price that shoots up for no rational reason, and then afterwards crashes for the rational reasons of 1) people dumping their holdings, which 2) have zero inherent value. Is crypto the perfect "currency" for this moment in time? Seems like bullseye perfection to me. Nothing could capture the zeitgeist better.
  7. you're goddamned motherfucking right. Team puma, all day, every day....
  8. Of course it is. Because 1) laws and enforcement of same are stone-cold dead when it comes to applying them against people with money, and 2) they are SUPER-stone-cold dead when it comes to crypto. There are no rules or laws when it comes to crypto. It is MADE for scamming. It is happiest when it is being used in a scam.
  9. Fail, because you did not specify if a treadmill was involved in this calculation.
  10. Bingo. You can do whatever horrible shit you want, but at the end, you hold up your "But I've accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior" card as a full, no-exceptions free pass. You're this fucking asshole: The Magic Jesus Pass means that you're good, you're heaven-bound no matter what you do. It's not just a shittacular way of being, it's also TERRIBLE theology. But then, "terrible theology" is the foundation of modern American Christianity, so keep on keeping on, I guess.
  11. Personally? I'm actually kinda hoping that some gestapo dumbass makes the mistake of arresting, disappearing, and deporting me. I have the means to get help (financial and otherwise) wherever I end up, rather quickly. I have the legal resources at hand (real-deal friends and some rather skilled acquaintances) to fight back and make as big a fuss and test case as you can imagine. I'm real close to wishing a muthafucka would. Because I am a dream plaintiff. That's what we need, for these overreaching fascists to fuck with the wrong plaintiff.
  12. I have no problem with that one. The turtle soup at both Commander's and Galatoire's is one of my favorite dishes on earth.
  13. Sir, this is Surly. Go fuck yourself. And muledick. And probably dickbutt. Wait, DEFINITELY dickbutt.
  14. I presume that's how you measure how big your dumps are. Whatever the method is....I am a contender for the medal stand in that respect.
  15. I have no problem with dogs on patios where allowed. Maybe others do, but that's definitely a "hey, the business allows it, so chill." Hell, I like it when I see a place with a patio and fresh water bowls and whatnot, I think it's a nice courtesy. And I enjoy it if a well-behaved dog is sitting at the table next to me, and lets me give him chin-scratches and whatnot. I miss having a dog. Just all things in their appropriate time and place. And yeah, even if a grocery "allows" it, it's still a crappy idea. On the other hand, take your dog to the outdoor farmer's market on Saturday? Cool, sounds like a nice little outing, so long as your dog isn't an ill-behaved hellbeast, in which case you shouldn't take him anywhere, even where dogs are allowed. And yeah, that logic applies to kids as well. There were phases in our kids' lives where we just didn't go out to eat anyplace that didn't have a playground where they could run free and be hellions, because that's where they were developmentally. Lotta dinners eaten frazzled on the patio at Central Market next to the playground for a time. What we DIDN'T do is say "hey, kids are allowed in this restaurant, so tough shit that you have to listen to my daughter cry about the fact that they won't cut her pancakes into dolphin shapes."
  16. Well, you DO notice Ana furiously masturbating about the millions DOGE is supposedly saving us all by taking a chainsaw to programs on which human lives actually depend.....but you also notice that he has not a single problem with the trillions of dollars ADDED to our deficit by virtue of the reduced revenues caused by Trump's tax cuts. See, we are in deficit danger! "DANGER! WE MUST DO SOMETHING! Let's cut this, and that, and that thing over there I don't even know what it is or what it does or whether it's important but let's cut it!" Cool. So, I guess we should also see if we could find some more revenues, too, to add to the plus side of the ledger to help close that gap, right, since "unsustainable deficit" is the greatest existential threat the Republic has ever seen? "Oh...no. We need to slash revenues too." Anyone who has passed third grade math: Deficit hawks are liars. They always are. If my household budget was truly in the type of dire straits that Ana says our country is in, I'd both 1) slash spending (sorry, no more purses, no eating out, turn the A/C temp up, no vacation this year) AND 2) tell my wife she needs to get a full-time job to give us more revenue. If I followed the DOGE plan, I would 1) shut off all my utilities, sell my cars so I couldn't get to work anymore, decide that only 3 out of 4 of my household get to eat each day, and 2) tell my wife to quit her part-time job, and start working less myself, because hey, producing revenues is hard and unpleasant. Oh, and I'd slash more in revenues than I slashed in spending because like Barbie said, math is hard.
  17. EXACTLY. Like, for example, the goddamned HEB shouldn't cater to people's inexplicable desire to bring Mr. Fluffywumps with them EVERYWHERE THEY GO. You love your dog. Great, that's awesome for you, and your dog. But maybe don't impose on all of society all the time wherever you go by insisting that Fluffwumps be there too. That's all that this is about. It isn't anti-dog. It's about appropriate "time and place." Re kids, for example, society is and has been just fine with kids at a grocery store. On the other hand, we are NOT fine with having erratic and potentially crying toddlers at a michelin-star fine-dining restaurant. If you had to sit next to a crying toddler at Barley Swine, most of us would agree that such behavior was bullshit and the parents were shitty and hell, we even like nice restaurants that say "please no young children." Young children are not appropriate to take some places. Dogs are not appropriate to take some places.
  18. That is actually not wrong at all. I shop primarily at three HEBs. Two of them in NW Austin, one of which is pretty white and higher income. That is absolutely where I see the most dogs. The other one, which is bigger with a more mixed bag, very few dogs. The third HEB -- the "United Nations" HEB at Lamar and Rundberg (GREAT mexican groceries available)....I've never seen a dog there. Not once. So, yeah, the "I have to bring Mr. Snugglybutt Fluffywumps with me wherever I go" is absolutely an issue with entitled white folks, almost exclusively. And again, my observation is that it skyrocketed post-pandemic. Maybe after people got used to spending all day at home with their pets, so now they want their pet with them wherever they go?
  19. Meh. This is just the system working exactly as designed, especially the part where the jackboots have zero accountability or way to stop them. Sound familiar? This shit is about to get 10X WORSE. It will NOT be getting any better.
  20. This. We used to take our dog on walks around the hood, time to run off-leash at a dog park, all that stuff. Room to roam in our yard as well. And of course, lots of hunting trips. She got out plenty. She didn't need to go to HEB when I had to go grab milk and eggs.
  21. I had you down as more the guanaco type, but I've been wrong about people before.
  22. All cool stuff. Grocery stores are made for humans to shop in, not dogs. I don't dislike dogs, I love dogs. They just don't belong there. And yes, human children do belong in grocery stores, because grocery stores are for humans. Shitty parents should get called out when their shitty kids do shitty things in human places, that will always be true. Also, young children cannot be left at home alone. Like, it's literally against the law in most circumstances. Dogs, however, can and should be left alone lots of times. Grocery stores are for people, not for dogs, or cats, or llamas, or any other animal you may love that you just HAVE to bring with you as you pick up lemons and chicken and saltines and whatnot. I dig dogs and cats and llamas. But they still don't belong at HEB. Unless they're in a package on the meat aisle, of course.
