  1. Dude.....my kingdom for the wisdom and leadership of Kuato. Or....as it all burns, at lease give us gals with three boobs. I DEMAND TO BE ENTERTAINED.
  2. I mean....gosh. Who on EARTH could have seen that coming. Just outta the blue, no possible way anyone could have predicted that approach happening.
  3. Here's the problem: you could legit say the same thing about....fucking TORCHY'S. All the gotdamned tourists who land and are like "ZOMG, I get in my Uber and IMMEDIATELY head to Torchy's, BEST TACOS ON THE PLANET!" And no, Franklin and Torchy's are not peers at all. Franklin is legit fucking amazing, brilliantly executed bbq. Torchy's is....mediocre tacos on store-bought tortillas. There are literally 100+ trailers in this town that serve better tacos. But....hype, man. Hype.
  4. Seriously. Brisketexan's book of Michelin star restaurants in Texas would be....a much, much different book. Any tex-mex joint that serves good chili gravy cheese enchiladas, preferably with a menu designation by number ("the #3 plate"). Luby's, as a cultural classic and Texas treasure, utterly typifying our broad state culture (fried chicken and CFS? Yep. Pie? Yep. Great cheese enchiladas? Yep.) At least 5 BBQ restaurants. Some new. Some old. A taco truck/trailer in at least 15 different towns. At least one no-name mexican diner in the RGV. At least 4 different country cafes that serve fried goodness (CFS, catfish, etc.) as their specialty. Allsup's burritos would get a cultural significance mention/nod. A gas station in the golden triangle area that serves top quality boudin balls. That there is Brisket's book. Maybe not fancy tires like Michelin-worthy. Maybe Cooper, or Falken.
  5. Torchy's got 3 stars. Some diner in Seminole that once served some snooty french tourist driving through a piece of "transcendent" pecan pie got 2 stars. Everything else got fucked.
  6. Just watched both seasons, and I really liked it. Loved the casting. Zahn McClarnon is always great. Yeah, the cheapness of the production shows -- they just don't have the budget to fully "go back in time" to capture all the architecture and such of the early 70s in the southwest. They filmed most of it around Santa Fe and Tesuque, and I'm pretty sure I even recognized some of the structures. That said, I've spent time in that area for a long time, including the 70s, and truly the architecture and look hasn't changed much at all. So, that's not a big knock on things. The use of a Suburban as a police vehicle isn't really authentic, although I kinda want an old Suburban now. Frankly, the cheapness of the production kind of reminds me of older shows (TV shows just didn't have big production budgets back in the 70s and 80s). It's more actor and character driven, and I like that. I dig it, am looking forward to season 3.
  7. This. This is the fascinating thing. They SIMULTANEOUSLY don't believe he'll do what he says he'll do.....yet they love him because "no more bullshit" and "promises made, promises kept!" The fucking cognitive dissonance is as 180 degree perfect as I've ever seen. Truly, I couldn't write a fictional scenario with such perfect dissonance.
  8. Nothing. I have tried, plenty. Nobody listens, nobody cares, everyone thinks it will all be magically different and awesome this time. Remember how we all used to make fun of the pseudo-"communists" on campus who would spout their idiocy about how true communism had never been tried, and they have all the ideas about how it will be awesome if we try it and "this time, it would be different!"??? I remember. And now we get to have the same thought about the people masturbating to the idea of how THIS authoritarian government will be awesome, just you wait and see! Why should I expend any more effort on people who don't fucking want anything but where we are and where we're headed? I have one job now: make as much fucking money as I can, however I can, to insulate me and mine from the worst of it. That's it. We've chosen "fuck you, every man for himself" as our national creed, and engraved it in stone. I'd be a fool not to live by it now.
  9. THAT...is the fucking bar that has to be cleared? The "oh, it's definitely too late now, the only path forward is armed resistance" type of bar? Jesus fucking christ, you wouldn't call a wildfire a wildfire worthy of concern until your house is fully consumed. And that is EXACTLY how we end up in a fucking horrific place. The time to respond to the advancing wildfire is while it is advancing.....not once your fucking home is in flames. But, here we are. Believe me, I hear you. Yours is the dominant way of thinking. Which is exactly how we end up where we are.
  10. This. Quit running trick plays. Run the ball right up the fucking middle and pound out yardage. It sucks that it's the reality, but reality is what it is.
  11. Oh, there are definitely differences. The biggest one being that the German population was ripe for ethnonationalist populist bullshit because of their extreme economic hardship. Our "extreme economic hardship" is nowhere even close to what they were experiencing.....yet, stupidly enough, the outrage, emotion, and anger in response to it is emotionally nearly identical. And no, we don't have a burning desire for local conquest. That's largely a function of our geography -- we simply don't have the history of European continental power struggles. So, our bout with fascism is not likely to be as externally militaristic as Germany's. We are not doing, and are not going to do, things EXACTLY the same as Germany did. The saying exists because it's true: “History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes.”
  12. Oh....my sweet summer child. Let me change that for you, so you realize how foolish it looks: You are not paying attention. The "Christo" is just the wrapping paper around the rank turd that is fascist authoritarianism. We WANT authoritarianism. We just voted for it. We are absolutely going to take it, we are going to cheer it on. The Trumpkins on here who are currently mocking us for pointing out where this is going will either be totally silent when it comes, or will be here to justify it, telling us "well, he HAS to suspend the rule of law to take our country back! That's what patriots do!" You fucking know how this goes. You don't want to know it. You don't want to acknowledge it. But...you know.
  13. Seems that might add more salt than I want. Don't get me wrong, love me some cajun seasoning, I just make pretty savory deviled eggs to begin with. The first hit is free, man.
  14. 1) Putin will do whatever the fuck he wants. 2) Trump will take it like a bitch, because that's what he is: lots of talk when dealing with rubes, or with people over whom he has ALL the leverage....worthless and weak with an actual opponent who doesn't give a shit.
  15. Oh, I literally inherited a bunch of saffron. It has held up very well for several years. Some spices last better than others, for sure.
  16. But on the bright side, I was born during that "long dark period of moral and sociocultural decline." And I caution you - correlation does NOT equal causation. But then again....it also doesn't DISPROVE causation. So, there's that.
  17. The bolded is my concern, dude. Yes, there's another side of every bout of exceptional cruel stupidity. It's the price that is paid to get there that is SUCH. A FUCKING. WASTE. Oh, and the 60s were a fucking shitshow too. It wasn't all hippies and peace and love with women with super hairy undercarriages. It was violence and assassinations, too. And other countries had their versions as well. Let's hope we're only going through "the shit era of the 50s and 60s in the US" and not "the 1930s in Germany and Italy." Because we are NOT different than those countries. Not much at all, really.
  18. The most important thing is....FRESH. Not that container that's been sitting at the back of the spice cabinet since 1999, used for deviled eggs once a year. That's really true for lots of spices. Otherwise, just buy a decent one. The bulk spice section at good markets, like Central Market, is both a great choice and a bargain. AND, you don't "overbuy." Get 1/2 oz at a time, so it doesn't sit forever. It's a lot cheaper than a high-end jar for $7, and won't go bad.
  19. This is the story, and pretty much the whole story. Trump, Trumpism, and a resurgence of xenophobia and demonization of the "other" is not a product of Trumpism, MAGA, etc. MAGA, Trumpism, and message board posters who gleefully jack off to the idea of going down to the border and shooting brown people are a product of WHO WE ARE. Fighting back/arguing against that is clearly just yelling against the waves as they roll over us. No point in talking about who we would like to be, who we pretend we are. We are who we are. This is who we are: - Open statements by men of "your body, MY choice" to women: online, by male students to females in high schools and colleges, by advocacy groups demonstrating on college campuses. - Gleeful statements and texts from friends and family members saying things like "glad that n***** b**** lost." - Taunts to hispanic people, south asian people, and other minority groups of "your ass is gonna get deported." - More open confrontations of people who are "foreign" looking or sounding in public of "go back to your country, you don't belong here." - Open verbal statements, emails, and signs telling black people to "get ready to go back to the plantation" and numerous other shitty messages like that. - Calling any and all gay and trans people "groomers" and "pedophiles" who should be taken care of by the law and otherwise. And then, a big chunk of people who go along with that because either they are blind to it, think it won't really affect them, think that they can deal with the effects because the money pay off will be better, etc. TLDR: We are mostly one of two things - shitty, or okay with shittiness if we think we can skirt the effects/reap the benefits.
  20. My query for the Trump supporters who claim to be decent, ethical, and moral human beings....why do they think a Trump win unleashed a torrent of permission for people to be shitty: - Open statements by men of "your body, MY choice" to women: online, by male students to females in high schools and colleges, by advocacy groups demonstrating on college campuses. From what I've seen, there is zero, zilch, NADA from the Trump supporter camp reacting to ANY of that with a "cut that shit out, that's not who we are, and if you stand for or say shit like that, GTFO of this movement." I'd ask "why is that," but I'm pretty sure we all know why that is the case. It is not just okay now, but a sign of strength, virtue, and dedication to the "MAGA movement" ideals, to behave that way. Cruelty and open hatred is not a side effect -- it's the point.
  21. Were they all jumping on the bed beforehand? Because if that was the case, perhaps a few fell off and broke their head?
  22. I think the point is now that people should jerk off while watching the ceiling fan, but perhaps I'm reading something into it.
