We need this season to start already. I just heard Ian Boyd wonder if Harold Perkins would be better than David Gbenda on the Inside Texas podcast. Peak offseason retardedness.

I will never forget the Dreamweaver article he wrote. I hope someone has that somewhere for reference.

Louisiana cornerback Wardell Mack selected Florida this morning. The destination wasn’t a big surprise, and we figured he’d announce in August, but the announcement did come with zero notice. With his commitment to the Gators, it gives us a good chance to analyze Texas’ numbers and needs at the position.
Long-time readers of Inside Texas know the importance of landing cornerbacks is heightened at UT because of how the staff utilizes the position. Nickel, or Star as the staff calls it, is essentially a third cornerback.
Thus far the staff has done very well stocking the shelves. That makes it pretty bizarre to see such consternation on Mack going elsewhere. Though, in conjunction with missing on Corian Gipson, it might appear the staff’s back is against the wall. That can be a good thing, like it is with defensive lineman Dominick McKinley.
The people who tend to get too high and too low are definitely doing what they do. But that just means they’re one Kobe Black announcement away from rubber-banding in the opposite direction. Side note: Did you know the highest and lowest points in the contiguous 48 states are 80 miles apart? On IT it’s just one klick.
When looking at the remaining years of eligibility on the current roster, there’s no reason for concern. There’s also still a lot of cycle left and you can be assured Texas will stay on both Gipson and Mack.
CURRENT PLAYERS
Senior Jahdae Barron: He’ll be off the NFL after this season. Once the media catches on to how good he is the staff will have a very good ‘proof of concept’ at Star.
Senior Ryan Watts: This is his last year at Texas. He’ll get NFL looks, too. The staff landed him from Ohio State out of the portal. Ah yes, the portal.
Junior Gavin Holmes: One year of eligibility after this year. Another portal get. He’s a proven, quality player, and he could very well be CB No. 4 this year.
Sophomore Terrance Brooks: Two years of eligibility after this season. Likely starter. Likely very good by season’s end.
Sophomore Austin Jordan: Two years of eligibility after this year. Quality player who could start this year at nickel or corner but given the roster he’s CB No. 5 and nickel No. 3.
Sophomore Jaylon Guilbeau: Two years of eligibility after this year. Quality player who will be Barron’s primary backup.
Redshirt freshman X’avion Brice: He likely will never be a star at Texas but he’s certainly not out of place.
Freshman Malik Muhammad: Three years of eligibility after this year. There’s a very good chance he starts in 2024 opposite Brooks. He’s going to be good.
Freshman Warren Roberson: Three years of eligibility this year (assuming he doesn’t redshirt). He’s more of a nickel but has also worked at corner.COMMITTED
Senior Santana Wilson: Stud, could play corner or nickel. High floor, high ceiling.
KEY TARGET
Senior Kobe Black: Stud. The must-get from Waco has been sold on immediately competing for Watts’ vacated corner role in 2024. He’d play a lot as a true freshman regardless.
CLOSING
Don’t get me wrong, you don’t want to miss on corners like Gipson and Mack. In particular, I liked their ability to fit multiple roles. But, if Texas lands Black to go with Wilson, this is still the best corner class Texas has landed under this staff.
Gaming it out a year or two, Texas is in an enviable position of having Brooks and Muhammad as two high end corners with talented players directly behind them. If Brooks becomes a three-year player, what do you think that will do for recruiting?
It’s not just corner, nickel is also in a good position for the foreseeable future with Guilbeau, Jordan, and Roberson. The youngest player, Roberson, probably has the most athletic upside.
Texas doesn’t ‘need’ more than two corners this cycle, assuming those two are Wilson and Black. However, I’d still bet on the staff signing three just because they can.
Jesus fucking Christ this man is a cunt.- 4

Quick notes on Micah Hudson
Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)
Just wrapped up the Lake Belton vs Weiss scrimmage in Pflugerville and I was able to speak with five-star WR Micah Hudson.
I’ll have a story with quote’s out tomorrow morning but wanted to drop some stuff on here before driving home.
-There was some chatter online about Hudson making his commitment at the Under Armour All American game in January, I can confirm that isn’t true as he told me he doesn’t have a date in mind but that he knows he’s not going to drag out his recruitment that long. As of right now my feeling is that this will be a mid to late fall decision.
-As far as the recruitment goes, Ohio State and Alabama sent in official offers on August 1st and have been in communication with Hudson since, but I’m still not changing my stance in that I don’t see any way Hudson leaves the state. Texas Tech is still the favorite, but Texas and Texas A&M are still lingering. I’m also maintaining my belief that I think Texas will have much better shot the longer this plays out.
-Lastly, he mentioned he and Sark exchanged texts this morning and that new Texas commit Colin Simmons hit him up just hours after committing to Texas yesterday.
Stay tuned for more tomorrow morning.
IN THE THREAD
Forgot to include this but for those wondering about his teammate Selman Bridges, he’s locked in with his Arkansas commitment and I don’t see that changing, at least in the near future.
Would much rather land the five star defensive/offensive linemen and corners then prioritize NIL for Hudson. I think our offense this year will sell itself to future portal receivers and recruits at receiver.- 13

Agreed. Which reminds me, does anyone remember that 1999 game where we lost to NC State bc of THREE (3) blocked punts?
True story- I got so drunk after that game I walked back to West Campus to see my girlfriend, showed up at my ex girlfriend’s place and the next day I broke up with my girlfriend and played it off like it was an intentional move to get back with the ex girlfriend. That’s how much alcohol I consumed to deal with three blocked punts.- 1

Nahlin on Gipson
247's infallible deity Steve Wiltfong has put in a prediction for Corian Gipson to commit to Clemson. Gipson doesn't announce until tomorrow afternoon so this is early by Wiltfong standards.
Wiltfong's last minute prediction track record is notable and worth consideration -- I fully grant that -- but as of this writing, Gipson has not told Texas his intentions one way or the other and communication continues daily. If it's out there that Gipson has told Texas he's not going there that's flat wrong. About as wrong as saying Ohio State is in the top two.
I'm not changing my pick but the IT team will continue working this one throughout the day. I hope to have another update today or this evening.
I will have no problem taking the L before the decision if it comes to that. We always own our reporting.
Nothing like acting like a petty cunt right before you are proven wrong. Nahlin is already in midsession form. -

Probably the guy at TCU who, before he got hurt, won the job over Dugan.
Chandler Morris is actually kind of shitty. Howard and Daniels are probably the best QB’s we play this year.
What about the opposite? Which team has the shittiest QB? Wyoming and Alabama come to mind.

You're given the Colorado job in December 2022, what do you do?
Option A: Stand mostly pat with the guys you've got from the 1-11 squad. Drive 'em down to Junction to Coach 'Em Up. They told the press they had a ton of fun going 1-11 but you're going to Lunchpail Coach 'em into success by god! They're gonna make a movie out of this!
Option B: Send the 1-11 players away. Fill up on SEC/FSU castaways. See if whatever got major program coaches excited in the first place is still in there somewhere and maybe you can pull it out of them with personality swag and promises of money in the future.
Me? I'm taking B every time.
There's no option where I entice Maye and Corum and Brock Bowers and Kool-Aid to transfer in. I'm at Colorado with limited money and a pathetic recent history.

You are creating a false choice to debate around. His choices were not do nothing to the roster or blow the entire thing up. He could have done both develop the talent he had and churn the roster to a degree. His ruthless, mercenary strategy is going to have consequences. All he needed to do is show improvement and trajectory in year one.- 3

If you want to grade this entire draft now, don’t forget the 5’s missing yesterday. Gilmore and Cooks each cost a 5.
If you don’t count the salary cap as a thing, sure. But they really are part of the free agency calculation. -

Bad pick in a bad draft for the Cowboys. It started with a questionable 1st round and only got worse. Eagles totally outclassed us.
Dallas reached on nearly every pick. The highlight of the draft was a late round running back. When you spend a high draft pick on a blocking tight end while your main competitor in the division just stockpiled defensive talent, you know it was a bad weekend. -

I fucking hate that the Eagles just sit there like adults and draft amazing players every round.

Well I was high as fuck when I posted that but I still think Dallas reached badly. They could have drafted another starting corner/nickle with Ringo and drafted Overshown in the fourth round.
