  1. This is getting off track from real estate, but your presumption about the down river impact of union pay might seem intuitively true to you, but I can think of at least five rebuttals, also that seem intuitively true, that would refute it. What is it about this particular conclusion that, lacking data to support it, you find so compelling? Here’s an easy one that’s going to be wildly deflationary compared to union pay-AI is going to make a ton of jobs pretend work over the next five years. Employers are going to be doing reduction in force, not because they aren’t making money, but because their employees are idle. This is going to hugely impact tech and the “new middle class” that’s come to replace industrial work. I think you’ve mentioned you have your law degree, even if you’re not really practicing-AI is already making paralegals superfluous labor and that’s just with where the technology is today.
  2. You think the rate of inflation is going to be impacted by union members making up about a 10th of the workforce? And that this is potentially more impactful than tariffs? What ever do you base this on?

I usually cook my roux a day in advance because I like to play chicken toasting the flour.
  4. They kind of have to-they spent so much on the Anne Rice rights and need programming to broadcast and sell to the streamers.
  5. Haha! A childless cat lady after all!
  6. It’s $60 a pound, so it’s special occasion or surly 1% only.
  7. I’d like to know why TxDot isn’t catching shit for underestimating the cost to such a degree.
  8. I was going to say Justine’s, but my God they’ve gotten expensive. I remember when that was a good weeknight dinner place with $7 escargot and $19 steak frites. Now those are $17 and $55. Even the pork chop is $40. El Dorado Cafe, obviously, fits the OP’s criteria, although they are probably not a hidden gem unless you’re south of the river.
  9. Just by coincidence I was talking to a pretty savvy agent about this yesterday morning and he made the point that the owners of Capital don’t care if it’s wrong, just whether it’s predictable. The market isn’t ignoring it, they are relying on it.
  10. No, that is regarded. They end up getting caught in chest chair and it’s just one more thing causing skin friction when you’re running around with 35 lbs of armor, plates, radio, ammo, water, etc., so you end up hating them.
  11. Why do you presume it would be a “no”? This was 30 years ago, but when I was in school everyone was pretty excited to take health because we had so little formal education on the subject matter otherwise.
  12. I’m starting to hate watch this show more than enjoy it. Too much contrivance to have this group of people so frequently ping pong into each lives. It worked for Lasso because they all were in the same org-it doesn’t work when Liz just happens to run into Paul or then meets up with him intentionally later and has skittles. You can’t do dramedy if everything feels like bullshit, there are no stakes. Also, and maybe this is just me, but did someone tell the actor that plays Brian to be a mimic of Sean Hayes? If I was gay I’d be pretty irritated that too much of my representation is dependent on the stereotype of gay men as overly emotional and somewhat shallow. And when did Brian become so close to Gabby that he drops by unannounced for advice, and she’s home in the middle of the day without work to do? Jesus, I should live in socal.
  13. Not in the UT system…
  14. Are there “non-academic” universities in the UT system? What are they doing that you object to?
  15. I wasn’t spending a lot of time hanging out in small town Spain, but in Madrid there’s tons of dining out with great food. I don’t think they are keeping slender by forgoing protein or because their meals are costlier for the locals and that it requires portion or quality compromise. They do have 100 Montaditos 1 Euro Wednesday’s, after all. I think that’s connected to education level. As college has gotten more attainable, it’s easier to disregard those who can’t go as intellectually inferior. Some of that has merged into a cultural criticism (the whole Hillbilly Elegy “they do this to themselves and therefore deserve it). Hell, that’s almost the thesis for the thread.
  16. It’s getting released. The whole “hackers might have gotten it” is cover for someone on the ethics committee to leak it. Probably a Republican, in fact.
  17. No, I’m not kidding about my Redmayne dislike. Even that All-Star team of performers can’t get me to overlook his casting, even paired with the added fun to play Sorkinism drinking games. I doubt The Good Shepherd is worth a re-watch. It’s kind of a frustrating movie* but I thought Matt Damon was terrific trying to subdue a lot of what makes him fun to watch and play everything internally. There was a review I recall from back in 2006 that described Angelina Jolie as wildly miscast and I agreed with that-the reviewer described her acting style and look as indefatigably contemporary and that it just doesn’t fit in a period piece that’s trying so hard to be authentic of its setting. I think I was mostly eager for some more of Syriana, which I loved (and fat Clooney is the best). *Now that I think of it, it’s kind of two movies (it’s long enough for that). The first half is great as Damon learns about spy craft and begins working for the government. It pairs well with Charlie Wilson’s War as you can see the genesis for a lot of the bullshit elitism that Gust Avrakotos complained about. The second half gets Redmayned.
  18. Staples were not cheaper in Madrid, although they have VAT that pushes the price up. Now that they have Costco at least you can buy in bulk because grocery products are smaller than in the US. Also, grocery store shelves were fully stocked with processed foods-chips, crackers, tons of candy. Even the breakfast cereals are mostly the overly sweetened variety like Frosted Flakes and not Kashi. Anyway, that was a little surprising because you’re right, they aren’t a bunch of fat asses waddling around.* *I do think culture plays a part-eating and drinking to excess is far less socially acceptable there.
  19. So what’s the downside from crippling the Russian oil refineries over the next six weeks? If it results in inflationary pressure on oil then won’t that just help US oil producers? Trump is about to get a honeymoon in which complaints about inflation can be blamed on Biden. And it’s clearly supportive of the Ukrainian war effort.
  20. Speaking of not spending money at a restaurant, has anyone been to the Leroy and Lewis steak night? Looks awesome from the Texas Monthly article.
  21. A solution in search of a problem, imo. Also, Mark Calabria eats more dicks than anyone not named Bob Stoops. He is about as anti-consumer as I have ever seen as a FHFA Director.
  22. I hated his character in The Good Shepherd so completely I can’t see him as anything other than a sniveling runt. The Oscar campaign for The Theory of Everything didn’t help, either, as snippets of the film taken out of context made him look like he was doing a bad impression.
  23. I’d love a review so thanks for making the thread. Big fan of the original (mainly Michael Lonsdale) so have to weigh that against the fact I absolutely hate Eddie Redmayne as a screen presence (I’m sure he’s a swell person off-screen).
  24. If there was someone out there willing to offer Bregman the Machado contract he would have signed already. Also, Ken Rosenthal is the Chip Brown of national baseball coverage. I have it all on good authority (aka @Wulaw Horn) that if it’s not on Jose De Jesus Ortiz’s Twitter you can ignore it.
  25. Maybe the years are different, but I doubt there’s much difference in annual salary.
