  1. I’m presuming you understand that charisma isn’t the only criteria for winning, but I’ll repeat my question-who do you think would have outperformed the candidates that were chosen, in Kerry’s case, a diverse primary against an incumbent with less than 50% approval (for the record, @bolverk, I was an Edward’s guy so my judgment is far from infallible, too). This whole “run better candidates” and “goddamn Dem elites need to quit picking Clintons” is fine to settle on, but it seems to be omitting the obvious-they were the best at the time and we voted for them. There’s a piece in The Atlantic I haven’t finished yet but it posits that our current anti-incumbent malaise is driven by the failure of government to deliver solutions fast enough to avoid social media criticism (I.e, information travels so fast now that everything looks like shit if you start picking at it.). I feel like there’s an undercurrent of that in the complaints about the Dem candidates. Here’s my rebuttal-the Dem VOTERS are at fault and need to quit blaming party elites, Hispanics for failing to marry themselves to the party like African Americans have, and wishing that every candidate looked or spoke like Obama.
  2. If your standard for candidate excellence is Obama then you're living in fantasy land. No one is going to measure up. John Kerry DESTROYED the field in the primary. In response to a post making the claim that the Dems are somehow holding back their best candidates because elites within the party are dictating who can win, your recommendation is "find someone else"? I guess we can bullshit about whatever on the thread but it's not constructive. If your complaint is that you wish there were better options, then I agree with you, but I don't see a better option who was ignored.
  3. Oh, totally disagree. Jim Webb or Martin O'Malley wasn't going to beat Trump and that was peak Bernie in terms of movement energy (and still got beat in every primary state that wasn't 80% anglo aside from Michigan) Who did you want to run in either of these elections that you think would have resulted in a different outcome?
  4. The Eurodollar podcast guy thinks a recession is imminent. Granted, I mostly stopped listening to that one because he’s been saying that since 2022.
  5. Yes, fuck those Harvard elites, right @BrickHorn? When has this been a problem aside from 2024?
  6. I was convinced we were going to see +25 to +30 on the MBS 5.5 coupon yesterday. Instead it opened at like -3 and just kept dropping from there. Usually when there’s this much volatility there’s some move towards an equilibrium in which we recover maybe half of what we lost, but I don’t think we’re done yet with the price deterioration.
  7. The Variety review was excellent (also, you can tell when Owen Gleiberman wants to go the extra mile on a review). For the record, he didn’t love it, but there was a lot of affection and admiration for its ambition.
  8. This is actually an easy one because ARB panels are staffed primarily with senior citizens that don’t get the complexity that might come from a protest built on real estate expertise. What they do get is pictures and repair quotes, and if you talk about how the enormous hole the builder dug is leaking water continuously and needs a total rebuild, and that the county assumes a value including that well constructed improvement, then it is much easier for their simple minds to find for you.
  9. Also Abreu with 1 WAR already making the major league minimum, while we have .2 from Smith/Chas/Dezenzo.
  10. Jalen Beeks is the early winner for small sample size luck. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over that one.
  11. A show that my my wife and I liked (and she loves Colin from Accounts) that seems to have a similar vibe is Starstruck on Max and I don't know anyone that has watched it. Caveat, I haven't seen season three but wife and reddit appeared to hate it.
  12. Is that necessarily a problem? Pay for field manager is probably related to experience and outside of a couple of managers, I doubt there’s sufficient experience to justify a premium. I’d rather the money go to an outfielder. FWIW, judging by the team hitting statistics and how offensively futile 2/3 of the hitters have been, 4-6 doesn’t look that bad.
  13. This is probably too late to help you, but for anyone else, Costco will give you a $100 store credit if you buy it there at the T Mobile kiosk. Weirdly, they won’t let you pay for the full balance for the phone and it has to be added as a recurring charge to your bill (no interest, mind you).
  14. Same, I think we’re a bat short. Starter depth is also an issue, but that’s always a concern.
  15. Maybe we can trade for Verlander a third time.
  16. I’ve been in meetings all morning and come out to a bond market that’s lost all of its gains from last week-I thought this the upside of my 401-K falling 20% was at least rates were going down.
  17. That dude is never getting carded to buy beer.
  18. It’s like no one wants to take a shot besides Booker.
  19. That line is nuts and no tourist should be spending 2 or 3 hours there that could be spent exploring. You probably already know this, but that park to the right of your picture became our “let‘s chill a bit and let the kids have a break and drink Caipirinhas.” spot to rest. Also highly recommend ducking into the train station to see the amazing tile work and grab a bite at the Time Out market adjacent (charred octupus was a highlight). We also did a boat tour that I might pass on (not terrible, it’s just more fun to be on foot).
  20. I love it, go get it. They aren’t going to do a straight adaptation because All-Star is pretty self contained and it’s clear this is meant to be the jumping off point in Gunn’s DC movie universe.
  21. All-Star Superman has my absolute favorite one page panel in all of comic-dom.
  22. I think they found it, it’s why they are winning.
  23. I'm looking at Colin Allred's platform (link here) and it's all pretty standard stuff that most voters would identify as leftist. I would agree that there's pretty fertile soil for economic populism, particularly five months after the election. It's because I'm skeptical and I want to see a more developed response (which you gave a couple of days ago, but I also want to know what other people are thinking). At least locally, I don't believe in a big D silent majority just waiting for their hearts to be stirred by Beto, Lina Hidalgo in 10 years or the or someone channeling the ghost of Ann Richards. I just don't think there's enough of us, despite the more progressive members of Surly trying to shout down anyone espousing that the middle should be targeted. If that's correct, then it means the party has to change. People like @Bozo_Casanova think it's largely self-inflicted, and maybe he's right, but if the remedy is "Texans really are more amenable to classical leftist programs than their own votes are telling us" then I'd like to know which programs. Texans are voting for abortion restrictions, transgender health restrictions, school vouchers for religious schools, etc., maybe not directly but in their choice of representation. Maybe you might counter that it's not the policy, it's the politician, but I'm skeptical about that, too, when their standard bearers are Patrick, Abbot, crazy eyes and Ted Cruz. Is there a single person in that group you'd want to have a beer with?
  24. I'm not real fond of performative stuff but the Dems have to quit playing to the traditional media for approval, and alt media and social media will rewards anything that grabs attention. You think they'll do better appealing to the left?
