Texas Recruiting Notes 2025: Duck Around and Find Out
I wouldnโt mind a better punter if weโre shopping for specialists.

Boerne is a nice visit but itโs also the โfuck you, I got mineโ capital of Texas.

They think of themselves as German, though. It's another way to distinguish themselves from the Mexicans and everyone else. It's also very Aggie despite the fact few are ranching (and fewer are farming).

Thatโs part of it, Big Sort and all. I also think that the old German pioneer, independent and yet community building spirit curdled into selfish NIMBYโism. The old German families resent the Mexican Americans that now outnumber them so the demographics are more like apartheid South Africa. The whole area is a really good example of the weakness of the state Democratic Party. If they were capable of party buiding it would be a great candidate because the numbers are there.

Unpopular movie opinions
She bothers me less than Bateman, whose public โBruce Wayneโ performance is pretty hammy, along with any time Batman attempts to quip. Like when he is back from Princeton and go to the narrows to meet Carmine Falcone, gives a homeless person his coat and says to the homeless dude โpeople are going to come looking for me.โ The homeless man says โwho?โ, and he replies back โeveryone.โ It makes him seem extremely narcissistic, which is at odds with a plot trying to paint him as a selfless hero. Then you have the callback later with โnice coatโ that takes a scene doing a lot of heavy lifting to suspend audience disbelief that this character would be frightening to criminals and adds that ridiculous dad joke.

Iโm presuming thatโs from the WaPo survey and article, the author of which was on the Bulwark podcast yesterday. Tim Miller asked the obvious question-โIf her policies are so popular why isnโt Kamala doing better?โ He started to answer his own question, echoed by the reporter, that Trump supportive voters arenโt ranking policy alignment very highly. They are MAGA cultists and/or pissed about inflation.

Look, the polls arenโt the problem. Political scientists would like to believe that asking citizens about their preferences is healthy for democracy and for communicating preferences to elected officials. The problem is they are now being used to feed a media ecosystem that is far more interested in talking about a horse race than policy. And in support of that you have media acknowledging the results of shit pollsters and treating them the same as non-partisan polls. Itโs not entirely different from all the goddamn bowl games that end up hosting Nevada versus Vanderbilt and both have 6-5 records.

I donโt think they are garbage, but Iโve been re-watching with my eight year old and thereโs definitely some weak spots that I bet Nolan would acknowledge donโt work. Heath Ledger, fwiw, is still incredible. Have you seen the Phantom Thread? Heโs relatively subdued in it and itโs probably the best lead performance of anyone in 2017.

2024 Election "I voted" thread.
Voted yesterday at the Balcones Woods shopping center. Line was about 40 deep both before and after I voted but it moved fast; I was in and out in half an hour. Definitely extra satisfying this year compared to โ22. I wish I could vote against Ted Cruz every morning for a little hit of dopamine.

Best spots to eat near the Domain
I live close and eat out a lot so have been to everywhere in the Domain and most of them close by. The restaurants in the Domain are all aggressively mediocre. On the bright side, no place is terrible but there isnโt a standout and there isnโt a budget friendly option. Ambiance is usually the best part of all of your options. We usually will do Flower Child or True Food because there are at least healthy options. Outside the Domain thereโs Turnstile (love their drink menu), Con Todo for tacos (also a Taco Deli is close at Gracy Farms). Tomodachi Sushi is relatively close, as is House of Three Gorges (over praised on the Austin Reddit thread but probably the only โwow, that was greatโ meal Iโve had in Austin in years).

All the more reason why structural reform that better enables majorities to craft policy should be the #1 Harris priority. You canโt โfixโ things if a nihilistic minority is empowered to put the breaks on everything, or you need to have a rare moment when all of the levers of power are in the hands of your party. The GOP should want this, too, if there are any left capable of acting in good faith.

2024-2025 Houston Rockets thread - Prepare for Liftoff ๐ [Now Featuring Kevin Durant]
If Green didnโt like it he could have just played out his rookie contract and go into restricted free agency. This is a compromise option between getting some security. If he has a good year the Rockets will want to max out an extension. If itโs not heading that direction then itโs probable the Rockets will want to move him.

Texas Monthly Top 50 Tacos (2024)
At least in Austin, itโs hard to get more โfoodyโ than a $10 taco at Nixta* *whatโs worse is they donโt innovate-the menu is mostly the same as five years ago, just more expensive.

Texas Monthly Top 50 Tacos (2024)
Hot take-Cuantos Tacos is the most overrated taco in Austin. Also, calling a taco Mexico City style is bullshit. They have ALL KINDS of styles in Mexico City.

The Persians donโt really have any experience with socialism, but some of the olds do recall the Shah fondly and I think thereโs some sympathy for the authoritarianism. The younger, 2nd gen vote like their white generational peers and most lean Dem because they had to become white collar professionals or risk the wrath of maman and baba.

Sorry dude, you read like someone who, by virtue of friendship, has had their reason compromised. And I would say the same to someone who has family in Gaza-they just arenโt able to make smart decisions at the moment. Itโs unfortunate that thereโs so many innocents caught up in the violence, but the cold reality is the policy of the United States remains supportive of Israeli agency over alternatives and they should be voting for a Harris presidency that promises to at least show compassion to the Gazans who have lost so much.

I generally agree with your takes but excusing Muslim Americans voting for a greater evil, in essence out of petulance, for a lesser evil is ethically indefensible.

All Encompassing Mortgage and Real Estate Thread
Thatโs one reading of it. I think thereโs more chaos in the markets at present than one explanation can account for, i.e., thereโs little consensus about what comes next. The immediate, post 9/18 deterioration in bond pricing wasnโt due to inflation concerns, it was reassurance the the Fed would be more accommodative and that the risk/reward balance favored equities (which depressed bond demand). War in the Middle East, oil price shock risk, the election, inflation coming down globally, seasonal adjustments are all in the strew pot, I just donโt know how you tease one out from another. My old boss wrote a blog post a couple of days ago and he thinks the rates will fall after the election*, but it might be later in Q1 before we get back to where we were 9/12-9/17. *he actually didnโt write this part, but I bet heโs counting on the Dems losing the Senate, House and President both go Dem, and a divided Congress reassures markets that fiscal policy will be restrained.

Not like we hang, but I bet Farrell loves it and will happily cash Warner Bros checks as long as they want to produce it.
