  1. It's been days since the shooting and the timeline of events described by the authorities still doesn't make sense. They are saying that the killer or the cops (depending on the report) barricaded the killer into a room full of children that the killer spent around an hour murdering. But then there's this report that the killer was apparently walking freely around the school when the cops entered???
  2. The police simply can't be relied on for this function. Even the tactical unit they brought in from the border patrol couldn't get through an interior door that was blocked by a cinderblock. A massive failure by every agency involved.
  3. Although I believe you are being facetious, I think to a degree this is fair. Cops aren't soldiers who know they will be court martialed if they go cower in a fucking car in the face of the enemy. These people were cowards but how would anyone have even known before they were placed in that situation and forced to react? But of course the larger truth is that they shouldn't be permitted or equipped to exercise a comparable degree of violence with the same lack of accountability as soldiers.
  4. The mayor said they are building a mental hospital. Not that the shooter was actually diagnosed with any kind of disorder or otherwise found to be a threat to himself or others. Not to mention that none of these scumbags have enough spine to pass a red flag law in this state.
  5. According to the state of Texas, this kid was years away from achieving the maturity and wisdom required to operate a can of Coors Light...but a civilized version of a military assault rifle though, that's cool.
  6. I don't know how historical I would get with it. Are hispanics in the valley with extended valley still living in Mexico playing out fantasies of violent settler colonialism? That doesn't make much sense to me. imo, it's nothing more than branding as part of forming an identity. In these communities dems/libs are coded amongst men as as degenerate, lazy, and effeminate while repubs/conservatives are coded as humble, hard working, and masculine. I think it probably goes back to the re-orientation of polarization in our politics around educational attainment.
  7. It's a machismo thing. You will find thousands of this same guy all over the valley. imo, I bet this guy was a good father and is probably a nice enough person to know, but has never put much of any thought into politics and is more or less a product of his environment. It's an identity.
  8. It burns my soul in a way politics can rarely do the degree that those guys (Abbott, Cornyn, and Cruz) openly don't give a fuck about this state and its citizens and yet receive no punishment for it. Hopefully in the hereafter they will get what's coming.
  9. Here are the numbers from the last mayoral election: I can't really find anything about the election, but I believe this is Garza, a historic figure in Uvalde: https://voces.lib.utexas.edu/collections/stories/josué-george-garza lol. https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2022/05/25/who-uvalde-mayor-don-mclaughlin/9929781002/
  10. It would be interesting to see the trend in popularity of the AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles having a high capacity. Never been a big gun person but growing up in Texas have of course known many gun owners. When I was a kid friends families would have rifles/shotguns for hunting and/or handguns for home defense. Now practically every person I know who owns a gun owns at least one AR-15 or something like it.
  11. I find Beto to be pretty cringe but anything outside of the usual is preferable.
  12. lol this motherfucker said "it could have been worse."
  13. This shit is just so patently ridiculous. Other rich western countries have rap music, video games, and don't have God in their classroom. Based on these standards its everyone else who should be massacring each other weekly while the US is an island of peace and equanimity.
  14. Oh I agree the reason it's being deployed as a talking point is the money grab aspect of it. Just another opportunity for these parasites to make their buddies a little richer. I guess it's just a little jarring how the meme's deployment in this instant is so incongruent with the facts. Uvalde is an example of why the idea doesn't work.
  15. It seems like the response from conservatives has coalesced to a degree around the idea of "soft targets." That the real solution is to eliminate soft targets by fortifying all of our schools. However, in this instance there were three cops who had an opportunity to stop the shooter but were flat out too fucking scared to stop him. Three cops vs one high school kid. Do the "soft target" folks plan on deploying the US Army to all of our schools because our cops clearly aren't up to the task even after being given every toy they could possibly want for decades. Keep in mind that, as was the case with the Parkland shooting, we can't even discipline cops for behaving cowardly in these situations.
  16. A big part of the problem is that the competing party is fucking worthless in this state. Cuellar is one of the most prominent Dems in the entire state and the guy is an example of everything that is wrong with the party - corrupt, machine-style politician who is pro-gun, anti-choice, and the party nationally went to bat for him to hold off someone halfway decent from taking that crook's seat.
  17. That fucking crook Cuellar winning off the support he received from Nancy and all the other top national members of the party is a reminder that nothing is getting fixed in this country anytime soon.
  18. This touches something deep in you. Devastating.
  19. I’ve seen more than a few people argue that current Brazil is a vision of America’s future.
  20. Do we know if this person was seeing a shrink or had been diagnosed with a mental disorder like bipolar, borderline, antisocial, etc.?
  21. The state elected a Democratic governor not all that long ago. Those people were around back then. I think things can change but for that to happen imo the Democratic Party in the state of Texas needs to be nuked and replaced with something new.
  22. Please tell me this guy will eventually end up in prison.
  23. It might as well be the case that groups of random people in public places spontaneously combust for no discoverable reason. Our reaction would be the same.
