  1. That is such a phenomenally ignorant take by Bohls. “It’s already the best conference.” What drives conference realignment? Quality or revenue? Revenue, obviously. Yes, the SEC is the best conference, but the B1G makes the most revenue, about 25% more than the SEC. As new SEC members, we don’t like to talk about that (we’d rather talk about quality), but that’s a real thing (my guess is the B1G fanbase is more attractive to advertisers than the SEC fanbase, for size and demographics). The SEC was approached by Texas and OU. The last thing they want is for Texas to join the B1G, widening the revenue gap even more. Really, thinking the SEC shouldn’t or wouldn’t want Texas (and OU) is the kind of thinking I would expect from College Station.
  2. Of course. His coverage of UT will give the Ag populace the endorsement they crave.
  3. Is that the DMN or the Houston Chronicle? Oh, for the good old days of print journalism, when the DMN, the DTH, the HC and the Houston Post were all terrific newspapers, and even the AAS was worth a read.
  4. This is peak Kirk Bohls: In an attempt to appear unbiased, he crafted his commentary as if it had to be filtered through the views of Texas’ most strident rivals. It was akin to letting Bill Byrne be his editor.
  5. I wonder if this was a “combat negative recruiting by extending the contract, but without increasing the buyout, because we all know we may have to fire his ass” move?
  6. No, that was YA Tittle (HoFer from LSU) Layne and Walker were HS buddies. Layne thought he had him going to Texas
  7. No, I can’t. It’s definitely a high-miss-rate strategy (as we see real time). I’m trying to think of guys that could have gone anywhere, going to small programs (not hidden gems excavated by small programs, which happens all the time). Robert Strait to Baylor and Micah Parker to TT are all that come to mind right now.
  8. Yeah, SMU’s strategy for landing whales is to offer early, try to get a commit and hold on until signing day. It’s a tough and frustrating strategy, but when it hits (Bijan Robinson and Kevin Durant), it’s beautiful. Our response tactic is to take closer looks at kids committed to TCU and SMU to see if there’s anything we want there.
  9. Switzer is a narcissist, too, and he shipped his QB playing son off to Arkansas State
  10. Fun re-read: https://www.cowboysrideforfree.com/2014/9/26/6252937/longhorn-network-destroyed-college-football-oklahoma-state-texas-football
  11. I get that. My point is that a conference’s tier 1 content should come from league games, and solid non-conference games. Tier 2 should be where the less attractive league games go. It’s a problem when league games are streamed. Last year, a lot of Baylor games streamed. Baylor won the B12 just a couple of years ago. Left Behind fans crow a lot about their media revenue and how it is superior to the ACC (not really so, when you add the ACC network revenue to the mix). The next contract after this one will be very telling.
  12. I attended the Mavs’ home opener this year. Luka went off, and won the game with a late, off balance three. An amazing game. He was … thick. Portly, even. I assumed he would play himself into shape, but he never did. If he doesn’t get a handle on it, his career arc will be nothing like we want.
  13. This was in response to a question about Saban’s comment that with NIL, players are too interested in compensation. Nick is concerned about college football, dammit! Nevermind that Saban was the one that made a process out of trapdooring the bottom of the roster.
  14. That Coach did not cause those kids to die. The kids’ dad killed the kids. The blame is all on the killer. You shouldn’t have to state it, but clearly the killing was senseless. If the dad was so mad at the baseball coach, maybe he would have shot him. He didn’t. Instead, he shot his two sons and then himself. Clearly, he wanted to hurt the mom, as a driving motive. What those two Aggie assholes are doing is opening up the most awful wounds, in hopes of helping the Ags win a baseball game. Kind of typical for them. We’ll see more of that before our game, wrt the ‘99 bonfire.
  15. John Shumate is a name I have not heard in a long time. I think Kato Armstrong comes to mind more often.
  16. (We need to leak that CDC said to leave the Mustangs out)
  17. It’s an interesting story. Reese and Clark are both rookies with heralded college careers. The WNBA “accepted” each in a different manner. People aren’t going to stop noticing, especially if it’s Reese that fouls Clark.
  18. As I understand it, Florida had a bat boy. The kid’s parents broke up, and the mom began a relationship with the baseball coach (I have no idea how serious). The dad called his ex and then killed his two sons, and then himself. That’s what those Ags are yelling about.
  19. I remember, as a student in the early ‘80s, listening to halftime shows where the band played Broadway songs, and thinking, “I guess this is what the old people like”.
  20. “Is she as awesome as she seems?”
  21. Seriously, if any of us ever encounter WNBA players, in ordinary life, we need to make sure to ask, “Do you know Caitlin Clark? What’s she like?”
  22. Good points. As you note, we play the biggest game in DFW every year, anyway. Their pride may not accept Austin-only games, and we’re never agreeing to play in Ownby/Ford, and its 30k seats. Basketball is different- preseason games are needed, and SMU is a short distance away, and places near a lot of our fans. Reasons for hard feelings? I mentioned the SMU boosters hiring PIs to get Texas in trouble in the ‘80s. I forgot another one- in the ‘60s, SMU coach Hayden Fry was pissed about going in probation for paying players. He turned in Texas. It turns out that the star players at Texas were so hard up for cash that they would take the allowance for hosting a recruit at a steak dinner, but hamburgers, and pocket the difference. Royal was very pissed off about that. As much as I enjoy the idea that Bellmont has a black list of programs it holds a grudge against (which would be awesome, since Texas never openly criticizes or complains about other coaches and programs), I struggle to believe it’s true. It is fun, though, to read SMU fans complaining about how Texas has been holding them down. It’s like the Mad Men elevator meme.
  23. So, …the Lord’s Supper. Communion. Christians are always talking about seeing our passed loved ones in heaven, but we don’t know how that would work. Jesus didn’t say much more about heaven other than that it wasn’t like what anyone was expecting. But… there is The Lord’s Supper. I believe there aren’t millions of communions happening each week. I believe there is only one Conmunion, ever, and it started two thousand years ago in a small room. When we participate, we are in communion with every saint who came before and every saint who will ever be. The last couple, I have taken the wafer and wine (juice) and focused on a dead relative, thinking, “I do this with you, Grandma (for example)”. I imagine them in the church I knew them in, and I feel their presence. You know, we perceive time as linear, but I don’t know that it has to be so.
  24. Oops, wrong link for basketball opponents https://texassports.com/sports/mens-basketball/opponent-history And it looks like it’s only records since 2005. I checked the other years and Texas has not played men’s basketball against SMU since we were required to by the SWC conference. Unlike football, basketball is a sport where their arena is of a size comparable to ours, and they are only a few hours from Austin in an area with lots of Longhorn fans. So, … grudge?
  25. This is a very unserious and trivial topic. That’s your warning. However, it is the offseason. I was looking at the SMU ON3 board, and was struck by the vitriol that their fans express for Texas. Crazy! How can they be so upset about someone they haven’t played in 28 years (football)? Since the breakup of the SWC, Texas scheduled all the other SWC schools except SMU, in football. Sure, UH pissed us off and made the blacklist, but we weren’t opposed to playing theM before bleacher gate. Does Texas have a grudge against the Mustangs? Does Texas have a reason? It kind of does. In the 1980s, SMU hired PIs to investigate Texas for NcAA violations, and Texas ended up on (mild, because the violations were misdemeanors and Texas didn’t fight the NCAA) probation. Old that drive a decades long grudge (I’m assuming here that it’s Texas that is balking on scheduling). I decided to look up and see if Texas had been playing SMU in basketball. Funny thing- the texassports website page, that shows all opponent basketball records, doesn’t list SMU (or Southern Methodist University). https://texassports.com/sports/2013/7/21/FB_0721135542 Huh. Maybe an oversight (we know plenty of games were played while SMU was in the SWC- twice per year, at least). How about the SMU AD page; maybe it has info- https://smumustangs.com/sports/mens-basketball/opponent-history Nope. Nothing for Texas, UT Austin or University of Texas. So, my original question (and thanks for hanging in there)- has Texas played SMU in men’s basketball since the SWC broke up (The women have played twice)? If not, is it on purpose or by chance? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
