  1. Fatah is less extreme than Hamas. Now, mind you, they are ready to pay pensions to Oct 7 attackers, per their “pay to slay” policy, so they’re no prize themselves …
  2. I am looking fwd to our SEC friends debating our B12 friends over the relative CFP worthiness of three loss SEC teams and two loss B12 teams.
  3. Yes, but they’re drunk
  4. My daughter had sepsis as an infant. 11 days in the hospital on an IV. It’s scary, but very treatable. Know how you can help? Get out there and give them some relief staying in the hospital with him, if possible.
  5. I can believe this. I can also believe 20k dead Russian prisoners on top of this. I can also believe well over 20k conscripts from Russian held areas of Ukraine. I can also believe Ukrainian POWs also conscripted and put in the front of meat wave charges. Russians are complete bastards.
  6. While DKR was coach, the SWC had a roster limit rule. There were no unlimited scholarships
  7. Royal was an OU alum, old teammates were boosters, and he believed in collegial sportsmanship (while beating that ass). He didn’t believe in cheating, though, and Fairbanks and Switzer did.
  8. I know nothing about Iowa’s NIL competitiveness. I do know they have a decent story to tell about OL development. But, there is something I’ve been wondering about B1G NIL… The SEC has been the best conference because that’s where the best concentration of players is, along with programs that have rabid and large support. Their supporters, though, are mostly big southern dummies. The B1G has large support, too, not as rabid, but (probably?) more prosperous. The B1G has a better media contract to support their ADs, and they have the potential for larger NIL support than their southeastern “peers”. I don’t know how many B1G teams have an institutional desire for nationally competitive football (Michigan, tOSU, PSU, USC, Washington, Oregon, NU…Illinois? UCLA? Iowa?), but they have a lot of potential to make noise, right? And aren’t we learning, with NIL that geography matters less to portal transfer than HS recruits?
  9. I couldn’t bear to listen to Corby and Bob discuss Terry’s meltdown postgame Wednesday
  10. Royal said, in response to the accusation that Texas bought players, too: “If I ever turned the Texas Exes loose on buying players, there wouldn’t be any left for anyone else”.
  11. I looked at BamaOnline. They have a thread where concern is expressed for the Longhorn players that will have to leave in order to make the numbers work. Who will take care of them? I am stunned. Fans of Nick Saban’s old team are shocked that another team is churning the bottom of its roster in order to make room for more talented players. Where have they been the last 15 years? Did they really think those third year Alabama LBs, stuck on third team on the depth chart, came up with the idea of transferring to Western Kentucky all on their own?
  12. Ok, maybe FSU and Clemson earn their share of the pie. Say, the pie grows enough with them that the slices stay the same size. Do they make the pie grow enough to make the slices bigger than before? If they don’t, why would the other conference members invite them?
  13. I suspect any “Alabama investigation” of Texas tampering is an attempt to hold off future contacts (by all other schools) with the rest of their roster. What happened to the Saban bragging to THSCA about his QB (Bryce Young) getting $1 million in NIL?
  14. Argument for the SEC or B1G taking in FSU, Clemson, Miami and maybe a few others: these teams are major programs and can compete at the highest levels, given the chance. They are definitely stronger programs than the SEC and B1G bottom dwellers. Argument against: Have to share money and they don’t increase the relative shares with their additions. Hmmmmm, wonder which argument wins out. Argument for the SEC or B1G (who are we kidding; it’s the B1G) taking in Notre Dame: It’s Notre Dame.
  15. Joel Klatt predicts Utah to be the B12 champ and rep in the CFP next year.
  16. Maybe his “hello” talk is as bad as his “goodbye” talk?
  17. I thought the Sooners’ expectations for Arnold next year are a bit of wish-casting. Also, it is a funny perspective of theirs, where their underperformance in NIL is cast as a lack of effort on their part, rather than a lack of resources. Their mailbag writer refers to Michigan as a blueprint, and I think he is referring to Michigan’s coaching and player development. As a counterpoint, I would note that I was told by an insider that Michigan has the NIL program that Texas aspires to.
  18. The Crimson and Cream Mailbag, offered for comment
  19. You’re close. There are two parts to it, as you wrote- first, the regular program operations and second, the NIL. Here are the media revenues for the conferences, per year: B1G: $80M SEC: $60M Big XII: $31M ACC: $26M G5: $5-10M This is the lion share of program revenue. For the best B12 team to have as much program funding as the worst B1G team, it has to immediately make up a $50M per year gap. (I suspect the SEC is holding off on offering a nine game conference schedule until it is offered money to close the $20M gap to the B1G). That’s where coaching and support staff salaries come from. I think strata will be solidifying really quickly. As for the ACC, I’m not convinced the SEC and B1G are looking to take on FSU, etc. For the good of the sport? Also, let’s see what the next B12 contract looks like. It seems to me that ESPN paid more this time, proportionate to Fox, than last contract, probably to assist UT and OU leaving.
  20. The situation, wrt the hostages, is so ugly now that it clearly pains news organizations to spell out or political leaders to openly speak about- 1. Of the remaining hostages, a unknown number have been killed. Some by Israeli bombs, perhaps (all deaths will be blamed, by Hamas, on Israeli bombs). Others have been killed by neglect or murdered. 2. Surviving hostages, at best, are in horrible conditions. At worst, they receive regular torture and sexual assault, or both. 3. There is no central Gazan organization that can place where every hostage is. 4. The surviving hostages that have been treated the worst are likely to be killed rather than released or traded. 5. Israel, uncharacteristically, seems to be “writing off” the hostages, rather than centering strategy on their release. (Note- Pres. Biden says there are as many as six U.S. citizens held hostage). I think this is a surprise to Hamas and its Iranian sponsors. This means Israel feels no urgency to get the Gazan invasion over with quickly.
  21. I get that Dak’s contract is a huge burden. It’s “no trade” and “no franchise tag”. To sign Lamb and Parsons, they’re going to have to extend him (and pay him more) to make room under the cap. If they wanted to rebuild, they’d like to start by trading Dak, but he is in charge on this. Question- can they tank? Can they just not pour money into new salaries? Can they trade other players for draft picks? Can they let the OL get so bad that Dak wants them to trade him? I know Jones wants to win now, but all he is setting up now is a series of disappointments like this year. Would tanking let them get out of this?
  22. You got me on that. I am so disappointed in Michigan over this sign stealing scandal. I used to think they were a gold standard for doing it the right way
  23. Really, Oklahoma:Texas as tOSU:Michigan is a better comp, all the way around. It takes in academic superiority, ethical superiority, … For the Ags, TAMU:Texas as North Korea:South Korea
  24. Yeah, that business about, “for probably all of us, there’s someone else that can do our jobs better”…wtf? Just say- “I promise you that this great program that you committed to will find coaches as good, maybe better than us.” Stop.
